Why I “don’t make mountain biking videos” anymore

- On almost every video I get a comment about “bringing back the mountain biking videos”. This is usually from a viewer yearning for the old days where me and some friends would hit the trails and document the experience. Today, we’ll talk about why I rarely do that anymore-with a mountain bike ride as the backdrop!

Pretty sure we all just want more builds in the yard trails
Yes
For real
I still rewatch the whale tail video. That’s the kind of thing I love to watch
My sentiments exactly.
Yup
I have to admit I dont watch all your videos anymore but I can completely understand your channel evolving. I miss the old days when you, Brian, Alex, and Phil were the 4 horsemen of youtube mtb... but that's just me living in the past.
those were the gold old days for YT MTB haha
When he left Miami was his peak
This! I was thinking exactly the same.
2017 and 2018 were peak mtb youtube
I too unsubscribed a year or more ago, but was wondering what he's doing now. This channel doesn't click with me anymore. EDIT: However, I have massive respect for Seth. He seems like a genuinely nice guy with a lot of talents. Hats off to you, sir.
Plenty of people do trail reviews, but I like the bike hacks and product reviews from a more realistic viewpoint. If something is crap you’re honest about it. And to be honest, you can’t be everything for everyone. You’re a great ambassador for the mountain biking industry, and have helped a lot of people, including me, to get interested in getting off our duffs and get outside on the trails. Just be you.
Fax
Dude - I genuinely just appreciate your content. It's rad to see you ride new stuff, but as a parent of a kiddo roughly the same as yours, makes a lot of sense. 4 years ago I rode every day. Now I'm lucky if I make it out to the trails once a week. Life changes, we grow. You do you, man. We'll keep watching.
No, it's called 'growing up.'
You were the reason why I got into mountain biking. Keep doing what you’re doing man.
I agree, me too
Me three
me four
Me to
Me five
I have four kids, so when I found out you were going to have a kid, I knew where the channel was going. Good Dad life isn't always glamorous travel. Your videos are still great and getting better. Keep it up!
To me, four kids is a lot! I just had my second a couple weeks ago, and no, it's not always glamorous. But I'm living the very best years of my life right now, partly in thanks to you guys. Thanks for the vote of confidence.
@@SethsBikeHacksmaybe there'll be a video of little Seth on a balance bike. Perhaps even a Seth's (learn how to ride a) bike hacks. Lessons for kids and tips for teaching. Just an idea.
Sounds like you've got your priorities well in order though. You can't go back to the years you miss!
@@SethsBikeHacksdidn’t know you had another child, congratulations
I just found out my girlfriend is 11 weeks along with my first child. Terrified and excited but mostly terrified..😅
@@SethsBikeHacksI'm the age of when you started the channel. I've already started taking it easy. You inspire me to challenge myself and love the sport again.
I'm a 42 year old novice rider with a full-time job and a family. I watch your channel because I appreciate that you aren't just posting ride videos, you're helping me to become more knowledgeable and the content is quality. There are a lot of other channels that focus on riding content, or technique. You're filling a different niche.
I came here to say this exact thing.
25, and I feel the same. If I wanted crazy POV rides there are just so many redbull vids or Avalanche POVs.
This^^^ my neighbors invited me for a ride on my old bike. They shared one of Seth's videos, and the inspiration to go and work on my bike, then go out a buy a new bike, then work on my bike myself, dude.the growth in the last month has been therapy I didn't know I needed. I swear, I feel like the biggest fanboy right now, probably sound like it too, but it's just a different world I'm learning about today that apparently took off long ago and specifically a decade ago with Seth.
Excellent comment! I liked the old Seth videos, and love the new Berm ones! Each has their place. It's just dope to see more people getting into riding, the sport, and hobbies in general!
All very valid reasons, Seth. I think the occasional trail riding video would be much appreciated. They have a special place in my heart because your trail riding videos were the ones that pushed me to try the sport. Hats off to you and keep up the good content. :)
for shure. seth got me back into mtb.
We all still love you, Seth!! Your videos definitely helped my interest in the mtb world spread, and your channel always holds a special place in my subscriptions!!!
We, huh...
I've been watching you for precisely 6 years now, and I'd say, your channel changed and grew with the audience. A lot of channels remain the same and their primary audience grows out of age, but you've grown with the audience, and the fact you have a growing family is why you should continue doing what you're doing now. People change with regards to needs, and you've done just that. With that being said, this was a joy to watch! Old School Seth lifts me up in times like this. It's like a family now
Same boat as you. I watch him because I enjoy watching him as a person and not because I only wanna see biking
Same. There's plenty of channels like Phil or Alex, who take long breaks and don't constantly innovate, and they become stagnant. Seth is a creator at heart. Always has been, and instead of following trends, he creates them. That's why he still is and always has been the dominant channel in the MTB universe.
Which is surpirising because hes not great at either. If he could still shred a bit he'd be showing us
Personally the Walmart Ozark build series is what im looking most forward to. Thats also somewhat isolated, short-form content, but what an engaging series it will be!
Hey, I get it. Family is the most important thing. Keep being a dad. The videos are great.
Really like that you write/tell stories in your videos, not just ride.
One option for when a trail you ride “goes viral” to help the local stewards might be to research and give kudos to the local groups that maintain them. Might even get some donations for those trail systems, bc people are going to search out what they see, and maybe they would give a little support.
Thanks for the entertaining videos!
More Eric in your videos, he’s awesome!
I agree!
What’s his channel?
@@6to8john @PorterMTB
@@BourbonEnthusiastcool, thank you
Change is the only constant - we're along for the journey! Also, as someone about your age, the video I've shared with more people than any other is the balance bike vs. training wheels video - it has helped some less bike focused adults get their kids on bikes - which ultimately makes things better for everyone!
All your videos are awesome. We appreciate the years you have put in to this community and will continue to support whatever you decide to make a video about.
Seth I appreciate your honesty! It’s been fun seeing different types of videos other than biking. its your personality that has me coning back to watch new videos, i definitely find them entertaining!
i think i speak for a lot of people when i say, seth as long as you are having fun and enjoying yourself then we dont mind what you post, what matters more is the connection you have created with people through making content. :) keep up the great work.
Awesome to see Eric with you. Seth's Bike Hacks were one of the driving forces behind me getting into MTBing. Love all types of your videos.
Super cool to Finnally meet you in person! I saw you the day that was supposed to be the backcountry bash that got canceled. Thank you for making Berm Park! I had a blast there!
Nice to see you and Alex back out on the trails; one of my favourite series you guys did was your bikepacking trip in the Florida Keys. Probably a long ways away before we'll see another one of those, but this loyal fan is gonna keep the dream alive; keep up the good work.
This is the best thing about Seth, he is aware and knows what’s happening behind the scenes. Keep up the good work on the videos
Like watching you ride what you build or are apart of and seeing your product reviews on new bike things but also look forward to seeing the stuff thats not always 100% bike related but you still put your personality in it and make it fun to watch
I just want to see more home track building. I like the wacky stuff you build at your house lol
That was so lol when Porter did that downhill turn into the berm and you tried to follow in his footsteps and wiped - I can relate to that so hard
I am more of a silent watcher for the past few years, but i still watch nearly all of your videos and I will proceed to do so, because they/you are awesome. I really like your travel videos, but i also like your berm peak trail building videos. I probably like them just as much as I liked your cozy berm creek videos or your Florida starters. Life goes on and everything changes, and you can count me in to go on a ride with you and find out, what it brings.
I’d love to see a series on trail maintenance. Like the best ways to fix brake bumps, build up berms, fix jumps etc stuff like that.
Hey Seth, just wanted to say how thankful I am for you, I mountain bike all time now and it’s great, about 5 years ago after watching your trail building videos, I decided I wanted to get into mountain biking, I bought my first bike not long after seeing how much I enjoyed your videos. Now here I am riding and building, and posting my own trail building videos on my channel, I’ve now built full trails in total. Also I don’t know what state the trails are but I think everyone would love to see you give us a tour of ur backyard and you ride stuff. Anyways, thanks again Seth🙏
I'm just a bike commuter & not a mountain biker. Been a fan since your Bunny Hop tutorial video & It's always awesome to see people succeed & watch their channel & content grow.
I was hungry for more bike product review videos but you do you & I'mma keep watching.
😊
i watch because of seth, it's either bike hacks or trail rides. Its understandable right now that you have a family and most of the subscribers understand that. Honestly most of the content creators on this platform have become fathers recently, its amazing that they're juggling between content creating and being with the family. I'm still gonna be your subscriber when things get tough. Two thumbs up Seth 🤟
I just like how well you explain all the things you do Seth, simple down to earth and with some fun thrown in. It just makes your videos so entertaining. That trail looks awesome.
Seth, you always obey the rule of “leave us wanting more”. Absolutely fantastic video. Keep up sharing the awesome journey.
Whatever content you make I'm here to watch so long as you keep posting seth. Thank you for all your hard work
You were the one that got me back into mountain biking 7 years ago. I love the content and everything that goes with it. I ain't gonna lie and say that I don't miss all your bunny hops, jumps and riding tips you produced. The channel has to progress in order to survive. Keep what you're doing Seth. I love it brotha! 🙌
I like all of it. Trail builds, puppers, friend visits, hacks, bike flipping and building for friends, avocado toast and product reviews. It’s all dope so keep doing what makes you happy and for what you have time for.
Dude you make outstanding content; that’s all that matters.
All the reasons given were super valid, none the less being someone who could care less about product videos and truly just love riding makes me sad to know this channel pretty much has nothing for me anymore. I miss the bike park reviews. Those were really helpful
Same here and I'm an old dude :P Kids always ruin good fun.
I'd love just to see him ride more, really... I am sure he can manage time to ride local. lol
@@GrafRamolo Amen!
I’m happy for you man, good on you for taking the time to express yourself and be true to yourself and the sport.
I am just glad that you have found continued success. Appreciate the video and insight.
Your mix of content has kept me coming back for years. Keep doing what you're doing. Throwing in a ride vid every now and again isn't a bad idea, but I'll be back to watch regardless.
It’s definitely sad that you don’t anymore, used to be my favourite part.
Good thing that his friend the Sampler is all about trail riding
Great seeing your friend Eric Porter in this video. His mountain bike videos with his family are fun to watch. As for people asking that silly question "why aren't you posting mountain bike videos?" From what I see, you post them all the time. They may not be traveling (like you did in the past) but they are entertaining, educational and fun to watch. I've actually learn some things/hacks from watching your videos. And it was because of your videos that I got back into cycling (both road and mountain biking) - and for that I say Thank You Seth.
Love your perspective, thanks for sharing!
I was just wondering why you weren’t doing as many riding videos… the thing is that you do the best riding video. You have a serious ability to create a story, to have a real narrative, entertain and maintain a great production quality. 😢
Hope to see more building in your backyard soon! And congrats on the second kiddo🎉
We think you are doing great. Keep up the amazing content😁
When I moved to NC, I learned about all the trails from you, Alex and Phil. This was one of your best videos in a while. I can always look at your old videos. Thanks for all the great content.
I have been slowly recovering from a bad bike smash, and your work as kept me in the sport during the downtime. Thanks
Seth, I've been watching you since the dnm dropper video and I could care less about you not riding anymore. I watch your channel for you first and for riding second. I have literally grown up watching your channel and have never missed an upload or not wanted to watch one of your videos. They are entertaining for me because of you, I love what you bring to your videos and you add value to them because of who you are. I hope you never stop making videos Seth! Oh and I miss the days when I would comment and you would always respond to me. It made me feel like a celebrity was talking to me and I felt so special. Keep killing it Seth your audience will keep loving you and what you do!
You're actually one of the only MTB channels I'm subscribed to. I love your content and think you do a great job. It's so much more likely for people to drop a negative comment or broadcast their opinions when there is an issue which of course, people are entitled to. Do what makes you happy though. I personally love watching the trail building videos. I've only road a trail once! But you inspire me to try more - at least after I get over my fear of losing another organ on a bike haha
Recently moved down to NC and have been begging my friends to come on a trip to come out to berm perk!
This was actually very enjoyable riding video, because you showcase the reality of scouting the trail, assessing it and then riding it. It was really entertaining and beneficial as I haven't ridden in a mtb park yet.
Do whatever makes you happy! Your channel is great so hopefully you're happy doing whatever your doing. Was fun to watch a video like this!
Seth, keep doing what you do! Your vids, all the way back from when you were still in Berm Creek are what got me into MTB. I'm so thankful for your vids, they are awesome!
You engineer some very creative self manufactured things, therefore I have no problem that you’ve moved on from riding oriented videos. In fact I quite look forward to what products are hot in the market and the quirky builds.
I immediately fell in love with mountain biking after my first trip a few days ago. Found your channel and appreciate it so much! Thank you!
Congrats on baby number 2!
I love the content you create! You inspire me to improve my bike and my skills and doing everything myself!
Shoutout from South Africa,
I do miss the back yard builds and look forward to seeing what you get up to next with Berm Peak!
Awesome look into the complexity of running a successful channel. Thanks Seth!
Long story short...never have children.
Trail building and flip bike, or your charitable builds are my favorites. A million people have ride videos, but you bring the “regular guy” into the scene. A very welcome change.
Great video and it's always good times when you and Eric team up... keep on rockin!
What I like best about your channel is the variety of content you provide. Each video is a treat of something new and is always entertaining. Sure, gone are the days of doing trail ride videos....but family must come first. Those kids need Daddy. As an Army Vet, I can attest to the toll it takes when you are away from family for extended periods. Please keep doing you, Seth. Your channel and content is the thing dreams are made of.
I love watching you ride, it's super fun and encouraging, buy why I sub and why I keep watching is because of all those other videos that teach and show. Keep up the good work!
I'd say, do em as you feel it! The best videos are when you're not acting, and are actually enjoying it, no matter what the video is actually about! Thank you for all the videos! Just keep enjoying life!
Thanks for the mountain bike video Seth, always great to have Eric on the channel!
Dude, the level of thought you put into most every aspect of your videos and content....it's like you self govern yourself for the benefit of the community and the locale. If there was a reason to continue watching you, it's that level of effort seen and your story telling. Thank you.
Found your channel in 2019 when I was at 235lbs. I bought my first hardtail MTB because of you in 2020 didn’t actually start riding until the end of 2021. In 2022 I was ready for my first full suspension MTB but got a little surprise from the wife 😂. Now in 2023 I’m at 185lbs with a 8 month baby boy still watching your new and old videos, I’m still aiming for a full suspension but family needs come first. Hopefully I get a full suspension in 2024 when I start working again but what I do know is I’ll still be following and watching your videos. Keep up the great work!
It’s impressive how much quality content you pump out. This video was spot on. Great story telling and killer footage 👌🏻
I really like your videos, i have learned a lot thanks to you, keep the good work and dont worry lots of us will still watch you no matter what you decide to do
Perfect Seth, I've learned a ton about mountain biking from your videos-always fun, always entertaining.Keep up the good work.
I really love the variety of your channel. Just keep doing what you want and I will watch it with happiness.
Been with this channel for some time now and your tag phrase is key to this channel. I usually learn something and am often entertained.
Thanks for the talk, and the ride. You got me into riding when i lived in Hawaii. Now I’m in Japan and doing road bikes. Thanks for the great content. Keep it up.
Yard builds were the best! Concept, explanation, carpentry, ride failure then success. The Golden Age. Happy to have been a part of it especially in the dark days of quarentine.
For some parts im sad about lack of some types of vides BUT im happy as long as this channel is online, thriving and about bike stuff. GL Seth
Good to see another riding vid. Just had a blast at your park all the way from Illinois, keep up the awesome vids!!!
When you organize your workspace, those were ways the videos I didn't know that I really needed. Gets me hyped to redesign and rearrange my shop and really send it to new levels of cool.
Shannon and were JUST taking about this topic!! Thank you so much for making this video!! I’m starting to burn out on the editing part- i have a TON of footage from last year that I don’t feel like editing and the ROI is exactly why!! Our channel is designed specifically for virtual recon- so the hits are from searches- which was the model, but it feels not worth it especially with a demanding fulltime job. I write this as we sit in a chalet in Quebec waiting for the trails to dry out again. LOL. Appreciate you Seth. Keep on keepin on!!
Your hack videos are my favorites. Always useful.
@SethsBikeHacks look at all the support and love you have. In my opinion, it's videos like this one that set you apart from the crowd. You communicate your passion and focus clearly, and it is received as genuine. You're one of the good guys, for sure! 🤙🏼
I totally understand your reasons, thanks for explaining them and showing off a great new trail. For what it’s worth, I like the educational videos too, not just the trail vids.
Loved the video, reminded me of classic Seth's bike hacks, really nostalgic
I enjoy all of your videos. You are articulate, intelligent, funny and have perspectives that are worth hearing. I think I enjoy the riding videos as much or more than anything else you do. I also really enjoy all of your build or upgrade videos.
At the end of the day just do the videos you want. I’m going to watch them all.
And thanks for getting me out of the house and back on a bike after 30 years.
Just a nice, fun relaxing (for me) vid. Tanks for the effort you put in. Makes me want to ride more!
Seth, your enthusiasm is contagious. It's obvious you are doing what you should be doing in this life - "Oh Yeah!" at 8:30.
I enjoyed watching this trail ride. As I progress on my trail riding and dirt jumping abilities, I find it nice to see someone take on new jumps and trails for the first time.
always love your content, since the beginning! nice evolution friend!!
I am new to mountain biking and have become addicted. I just found you a couple of weeks ago. I love what you do so far and appreciate your content and the time you put into making a better experience. Some of the boys in my fam are going to Berm Park in a month or so and are looking forward to all of the trails. Keep ROCKIN'!!!
Thanks for this video and all the videos you make. I started watching your channel because you had a video on balance bikes and teaching kids to ride. I kept watching because your videos are well made and entertaining. I feel like I have learned a lot about mountain bikes and the bicycle industry by watching your videos.
I've never been a mountain bike rider, but I used to be way into road bikes when I was a teenager and college student. I still ride my Raleigh Sport three speed to work whenever I don't have to pick up the kids or run errands. I probably won't take up mountain bike riding in my fifties, but it sure makes me want to get outside on some of the bike trails and paths in my region.
You answered my questions about why there is less biking. I understand. I am happy to see you and Eric riding together! You are two channels and collaborators I really enjoy!
When people have little kids, you often never hear from them again. Like, ever. They just disappear into that world completely. So I'm just happy you're still making MTB-related videos, even if they aren't yard builds or POV riding.
I often go back and look at the old videos from you, Alex and Brian. They're all classics now: Moab, Heartbreak Ridge, all that stuff. One of my favorites is when you and Alex rode Heartbreak Ridge on Walmart bikes. I had to close my office door because I was LOLing so goddamn hard. That is straight-up legendary TH-cam as far as I'm concerned. I also go back and watch you and Phil on the carbon fiber BMX bike and the couch jump.
But I like the new stuff, too. I look forward to watching whatever you make, regardless of the focus.
I am not a mountin biker but i love coming back on the channel and watching a variety of videos! They are interesting and (mostly) educational! 😁
So you do you Seth and you always gonna have loyal viewers coming back for whatever kind of videos you make!
Happy about your growing family and wish you best of luck!
whatever videos you will do I will always be there to watch it, do what's best for you!
The content you enjoy making will always be the best. Keep it up Seth
been with you since you were tooling around on a bmx bike doing tricks and sending a city bike of a 3ft ledge loved seeing the channel grow and watching you a build a life from it
Honestly just glad to see you doing your thing and making what you wanna make when you make it. That’s your formula and don’t change it, it’s like a nice little surprise when I see a seth upload
From the start your videos had a concept, script and theme and HACKS. Each different and each was very entertaining, that was so fresh and nice, no 2 min random talking that leads to nowhere or minute for the sponsor. You have a concept for each video even uploading after injury. I will always remember the ride with Alexander that you popped his shoulder back in or the ride on Slikrock, I build my first front wheel with help from your video and had a dream to do something similar. You took us on so many rides and always stayed down to earth even after being one of the biggest mtb channels.
For that I thank you Seth, all the love and prosperity to you and your family.
I like the kind of content you make more. I just love to learn about stuff and if I want to see some trail riding I'll ride myself. Keep doing what your doing.
Congratulations on baby #2. I miss the build videos, but you are still one of the very few channels I watch at regular speed.
Great video Seth! It’s always fun to see Eric too. Seth you and I met at Ridgeline a few months back. Seth I am a teacher and we had three years in a row where we did cross country and looked for family friendly trails across the USA. Your videos led us to Bentonville and we found places like Baker Preserve in Knoxville and ultimately Ridgeline in DuPont. We lived in California and moved to the upstate of South Carolina. Your videos have been a huge impact on our family. Thanks!
Great vid Seth! Ive watched your vids since the beginning and aged with the channel. Really appreciate the content.
I love all your content, if it mentions bikes, bike parts, riding, bike apparel, etc I will watch. Keep doing what you are doing. The variety is great.
