    Yes, totally agree with you! I've always pretty much lived this way due to limited finances. I would spend Sunday mornings making 3 main meals ie: say a big pot of soup, 2 meatloaves with mashed potatoes and maybe a pot of homemade spaghetti sauce and homemade bread. This would be my cooking for the week. Soup could be lunch one day, dinner the next. Same thing with meatloaf, dinner one or 2 nights, sandwiches for lunches, of course depending on how many mouths to feed. Sauce could be used for spaghetti one night, or throw together a quick dough for pizza another, or if you had frozen meatballs you could do meatball sandwiches, etc. Being an early riser I would have all 3 meals done by noon on a Sunday and packed away for the week. Another meal that stretches far is a dish called Halushki. My husband was Ukranian and he loved it. One head of cabbage, 3/4 lb of bacon diced and 1 bag of egg noodles. Brown diced bacon and remove from pan. Save a small amount of the bacon grease and add butter to simmer grated cabbage til very tender. Cook noodles as directed. Once cabbage is tender add bacon and noodles to the cabbage, salt and pepper to taste. Very cheap meal. An inexpensive meal he would make was: 1 bag of egg noodles, 1 large onion, 1 (16 oz container cottage cheese). Cook noodles as directed, fry chopped onion till lightly browned and tender. Add drained noodles back to pot, add browned onion and container of cottage cheese and warm through. Another cheap meal. Hope this helps someone....

    We are a family of two, retired. We buy just about everything you've put into your cart. Repackage as serving sizes for us and or longer term pantry storage using our vacuum sealer. We have also always enjoyed having a large freezer. We find having good ingredients on hand allows to spend time together cooking which frees us up to have more leisure time together. It's a win-win for us.

    Totally agree with this vlog. I’ve always bought these cheaper staples. Only me and hubby now so don’t need to buy as much. I still make soups a lot and freeze it also. Nothing gets wasted in my house! Great vlog Megan.

      I see in the grocery store more folks are buy more fresh fruit, vegetables. Getting more mixes, grains, beans, pasta and spices from bulk section. So folks that know how to cook are cooking. Buying less processed foods to control their food bill.
      When you have more time than money. Other wise are you going to get another job to eat?

    We cook chicken thighs in a crockpot then shred it. We then use the shredded meat for other stuff.. hamburger helper, tacos, rice and veggies with soy sauce, cheesy rice and broccoli with chicken, quesadilla, chicken salad sandwich. A huge variety.
    Better than bouillon is amazing!

    I grew up in Hawaii, the SPAM capitol of the world! Eating cheap is part of our culture, and there's tons of variety. Also, saw a great recipe the other day - Turkish eggs. The secret, that could be used for many recipes, is adding smoked paprika to your melting butter. Wow! What a flavor burst over eggs, veggies, potato, pasta, etc...Luv you guys 💚

      It lovely isn’t it… also a great start to soup base and casserole..the smoked paprika gives a different flavour profile to standard paprika ….. it’s great changing up the paprika in a recipe and getting to different flavour profiles…. No one will know😉…

    I listened to your podcast on Megan leaving social media (excellent) My experience is similar, it is more peaceful and it really was an eye opener- how much and where we spend our time. Most people do have the time to cook a homemade meal. We prioritize what is most important.

    I agree with you so much Megan, my boys used to love a very simple pasta dish, cook your pasta, any kind, and just before it is ready, in a large skillet heat some olive oil and gently brown some garlic, once the garlic is browned, drain the pasta and toss it through the garlic infused olive oil and add grated cheese and serve, delish, easy and costs pennies.

    This is how I cook! Mostly from scratch, I use old Amish cookbooks, pioneer cookbooks, food storage cookbooks, I may tweak them to fit what I have. I chose to be a stay at home Mom so this helped me do that. Even after making more money I still cooked this way, my hubby retired early and now there’s just 3 of us to cook for but I still cook from scratch because I like knowing what’s in my food 😉 great video!

    Dried beans! There are so many ways to prepare dried beans. Add any gran and you have a complete protein. Beans and rice, beans and corn ( think tortillas!, cornbread ).

    I have to smile about all those eggs. I probably use fewer in a year! Explaining in front of kids how you cope in tough times does not only teach them about those skills, but also gives them a sense of security, knowing that you'll cope. I love how proud Mike looks of his wife.

    It's interesting to see the difference between country. In Australia 12 large eggs are $4.50. Cheese is also crazy expensive and chicken thighs are $5.60/lb

      And chicken thighs are as if not more expensive than chicken breasts!
      Butter is $10/kg (normal price, I try and get it for anything less than that). Cheese (tasty) is $9/kg.

      @@kyliegellert4497 I tend to go for rice or pastas as a side to fill things out, meat, and load up on cheaper veggies (honestly sometimes frozen steamed veggies with a little butter and garlic are cheaper than the fresh). Buying the 'odd ones' or 'ugly' bags of fruit and veg is a great way of getting perfectly fresh fruit and veg cheaper too. Also sometimes buying the bigger containers of things is cheaper, but also the smaller items on sale can work out at a better price.

I only buy frozen broccoli florets because its usually cheaper and genuinely tastes no different as long as it hasn't been defrosted before use to prevent it going soggy and gross. For me a bag of mixed frozen veggies, rice (especially when the big 5-10kg bags are on sale), and a good stir fry sauce are staples in my home and I sub in any meat that's either on special or I prefer. When it comes to home cleaning stuff I buy a lot from Big W because their larger sizes are cheaper, also chemist warehouse can have good prices on cleaning stuff or health and beauty things like soap etc. I basically just shop sales, stock up on my necessities when theyre a good price, and fill in in between.

At the job I currently have, I'm making 1/2 what I used to and w/o my roommate, could not keep the house. I am looking for ways to simplify and this was really helpful! Bless you!

    My cheapest meal that everybody loves is stuffed baked potatoes so you’re right when potatoes are cheap and bacon and cheese and butter because that makes yourself a whole meal and Being in New Mexico we use a lot of pinto beans and dry pinto beans are a wonderful staple along with your rice and potatoes

    Great job on the video Megan! This is how I cook too, and the reasons behind it. If one has a bunch of sauces and dressings they make, plus these basic foods, your family can eat healthy meals for far less than store bought premade foods. And homemade tastes FAR better than store bought! I keep a supply of tangy foods on hand to add zip to the food, like green onions, fresh lemons & limes, cilantro, grape tomatoes, campari tomatoes, fresh herbs, etc. We're planning to lower our food bill more by gardening more, and preserving more. Thanks for sharing! So many people need this message!!

    This was such a wonderful and helpful video for those who are having a hard time in stretching their food budget. And/Or for those who love to make their money stretch as far as possible. One of my fondest memories growing up is my mom peeling potatoes and onions and my dad frying them ❤ P.S., I use Better than Bouillon, too! I especially love their Ham Bouillon, for bean soup! YUM!

    Nice video Megan, and Mike. Share some of you recipes of cooking from scratch. There are days when we will have roasted chicken cut up, cheese, crackers, and fruit (grapes, cut up apple ect...) as a meal. We also will have oatmeal as a meal once or twice month. Cooked on top of the stove. If I get fancy, I'll make baked Amish oatmeal. We also tell our kids you will eat what is served at meal time, or have a peanut butter, and jelly sandwich. There is no cooking what you want because things are getting expensive.

      Teaching kids to cook and clean is very important. I love watching my kids cook healthy food with confidence and not having to rely on junk fast food. They even pack their lunches!

      Having the kids participate also helps teach them to learn planning, measuring and best of all how to budget. These are life skills that they need to learn early.

    Great video; very important information! I love preparing meals from scratch. I know not everyone has time or talents for this; most people spend years becoming good cooks by trial and error!     Good job with all your food choices! So many people go to the warehouse clubs to shop and fill their carts with junk food. You made some good choices of veggies, rice, and staple food. Its so easy to make your own salad dressing without all the added sugar and chemicals. Pasta sauces with spices we all have in our pantry are less expensive than jarred sauce. Also buy hamburg on sale, make meatballs and freeze them and they are ready when needed for a quick meal. Your family is lucky to have such a smart and caring Mom and Dad. Keep up the good work!!!

    Chicken thighs were more expensive than breast at our store. I don’t understand why. Butter was $4 a lb. some of the prices had me scratching my head. We have gone to using meat as a flavoring instead of the main dish. We prepare about half as much as we used to.

    Thanks for the reminder of theses basic staple foods that can provide great meals for the family. Also, Costco does sell short grain white rice. I saw it in your video. It was right next to the short grain brown rice. It's in a white bag and the name is HOMAI, Calrose rice. It's great rice for sushi rice or sticky white rice. We love it! Thanks for sharing.

    Very wise words. Some of our family's favourite meals have emanated from times when dinner was created from "What's in the Fridge". These meals that had humble beginnings are now served regularly. Good family cooking takes practise and a bit of imagination.

      I always do that! My sister used to take the little bites of food that is almost too small to save, and combine those bits of leftover vegetable and the remains of undressed salad and mix them with cottage cheese for lunch. Add a few onion rings chopped up on the top and it’s really tasty!

    Hi new to your channel, you came as a recommendation of blogs to watch. You have a cute family. Love Costco great shopping trip, I get Costco, delivery in London as don't drive. we normally do a monthly bulk buy from Asda for £200 that feed 3 adults 2 cats and a dog, then we top our weekly shop at Ocado for £99, we love cooking soups pasta, a pot roast, bake cakes, have baked bread before, but now we are growing are fruit and veg, like your basic packet of cheap fresh tomatoes, they cost £3. for a pack of 6. when they use to cost £.99p. loads of items have gone up. cheaper to grow most fruit and veg at home. so until you see your veg in the back garden, have to keep buying. Bread for sure I will be making again, as love the smell of baked bread in the house.

    in star valley Wyoming we get 50# bags of potatoes for maybe 18.00 in the fall, we put them in our garage and they keep most of the year till maybe April, but we are colder, we also buy bags of onions which really helps on the budget. Where I live the closest Costco is 90 miles away, so ... we do not go very often. I remember my grandmother saving all of her bacon grease, she lived through the depression, maybe we can learn from her.

    You are so right on. My biggest problem is it is so hard to cook for one. When I’m diligent and cook a meal, portion it out to individual meals to freeze and eat one, I eat cheaper and more nutritionally. When I don’t cook, I eat out to much and mostly junk plus more expensive.

    Both my husband and I both work full time and I still cook from scratch. If I can find time to cook from scratch every night of the week, anyone should be able to. I was also taught how to cook by my mother who also learned how to cook from her mom and my dad's mom. My Aunt gave me a Fannie Farmer cook book which shows you how to cook basics and add to them.

    Pro tip: You can also shred and freeze cheese and it defrosts fine. Also cheese slices. (I’ve heard the blocks of cheese don’t unfreeze great so haven’t tried myself)
    Also can freeze your bread products, butter, (I’ve heard milk, never personally done it), obviously fruits/veggies, lunch meats etc.
    With bread either put it in the fridge over night to defrost or pop it in the microwave for a few seconds, I do 10-30..

    Butter may cost a little more but it digests so much better and you don’t get all that junk in margarine.
    Chicken parts are so much tastier in soups and casseroles and they are cubed or shredded so they don’t have to look pretty.

    Tomato paste is concentrated and takes up less space than tomato sauce plus you can easily convert it into tomato sauce by mixing 1 part tomato paste and 1 part water and blend it well. Now that the sauce is ready you can season it with garlic, onion, herbs based on your taste.

    Living with my daughter and 3 teenage grandkids and this is how we do our cooking. We make bread, cook from scratch and pride ourselves on coming up with our own version of "restaurant meals". We make a menu plan that is flexible and we try to keep a good backup on "basics" and freeze soups, chili, and the meals that we double when cooking. Our goodies/snacks we make ourselves instead of overpriced processed mass produced. We try to stay ahead of the "holiday" food prices and are making different choices for our holiday meals. We don't go hungry, don't feel deprived, but thrilled when we are at the end of the month and still have multiple choices for meals. The kids have just as much input on the menu plan, we always make sure if there's a meal that isn't appealing to someone that there is something else available. I'm happy to pass along recipes from my childhood and that friends have shared, and we find lots online to try and tweak to our family tastes.

    Thanks for the info. I'll do the same. Friday night dinners I call dump dinners. So I'll clear out leftovers so when I shop on the weekend I have a clear fridge to fill. I typically make a potpie or goulash type of meal. But I also like to see what things I can throw together to make something yummy.

    We were a young military family. If it hadn't been for the Commissary we would have eaten more soup even in Hawaii where its warm year round. We ate a lot of stir fry. A little chicken some rice and a few veggies, some soy sauce can go a long way.

    Being more frugal with your choices at the grocery store is a great savings. You have said what I have thought for a long time. Sometimes I watch as others check out at the grocery store and I wonder why the cart is full of boxed pre-made meals that are more expensive. Cooking from scratch is a skill a lot of people do not have anymore. When my children were growing up I would keep parts of meals prepared in the freezer. Things like browned ground meat to later season for tacos, spaghetti, lasagna etc, chopped onions, carrots and celery that was ready to get out for a meal prep and good to go. Made cooking after a long day at work much easier or days when after school sports made you a taxi and time was very limited. Crock pot meals were also a time saver. Also using a side from today as part of the next meal helps to not have to eat the same thing several times in a week. Great info! Thanks for sharing

    A tip that I use when buying bulk ground meat is to weigh out 1 pound and place it into a gallon sized ziplock storage bag. I close the bag, leaving a space for a straw and I use a rolling pin to roll all the air out of the bag before I finish closing it. They stack well in the freezer when rolled flat… If you don’t have a vacuum sealer, this works well to keep the meat from getting freezer burn…

    Unfortunately for a person with high insulin the carbs are deadly. No rice pasta wheat flour beans potatoes or anything sweet. Only high protein therefore meat salads and vegies.

      High insulin?? How high?? When mine was high (recently) I harvested the dandelion greens from the yard and made green smoothies. I used other greens like spinach and kale mixes with my fruit allowance for the day. Drank a lot of water (2 glasses before each meal). And my dietician helped by giving me a list of portion sizes. 1/2 cup pasta and rice allowed. There’s a book out called Calorie King and it will tell you how many calories and how many carbs food have, as well as serving size. It really helped.

    Meal plan, meal plan, meal plan. Plan out a weeks worth of meals, and account for leftovers using them to create other meals or be another meal itself then next day. Big one for me and I make chili one day, two days later I bake sweet potatoes and stuff them with the leftover chili. 2-4-1 saves a ton of money.

    I'm looking to learn more stove top recipes rather than oven based as the price of cooking/heating fuel here in the UK is set to double this year. I'll be putting into practice the lesson my mother taught me about always filling the oven - so if we were having a casserole she'd put in a rice pudding too. If she was roasting meat she'd roast some vegetables with it and an apple pie would go in on another shelf.

      We have been using our Crock-Pot, Instant pot and the stovetop much more than the oven. We went to a thrift store and got a sandwich maker that had different plates to make waffles and also grill too. We are trying to be very conservative with our electric use and these have helped a lot.

    Best thing to do is cut the snacks and processed foods. Get whole foods and you will be more full and satisfied after meals. It takes getting used to but we are much better and healthier for it. We make a ton of meals from the same few ingredients list every week because it is so versatile. You can make potatoes a hundred ways. And a good olive oil and butter, onion and garlic can take any meal to taste even more flavorful and delicious!

    If you have a Honey Baked Ham shop nearby, they sell ham butts for cheap, under 10 bucks. I cook it with a lot of black eyed peas, sautéed with carrots, celery and onions and chicken broth. So good during the winter. Also I make big pots of Simple Riboletta soup with carrots, celery, onion, garlic, kale, cabbage, tomatoes, farro, chicken broth and the rind. From Parmesan cheese.

    Yes totally agree with this vlog, I have always lived this way being single you have to be creative and I always have the cheap food staples on hand for a quick and easy meals that I can make in batches and have left overs for the week (frozen veggies, meat, fish, pasta, pasta sauce, canned veggies, spices) And I bake my own bread 4 loafs at the first of the month and freeze them and have bread for the month cheap and easy.

    The roasted chickens are soooo cheap at Costco! We buy more than one, keep one in the fridge and freeze the others. Also, when it comes to convenience of home cooking, I like to make double or more in one cooking session and eat leftovers. Cook the pound of pasta but just put a little olive oil on it and then you can pull it out later and add just the sauce or toppings you want at that time. Change it up the next day. Also, home style chicken nuggets make a fast cheap way to have chicken parm. Cheese can be frozen so buy the bulk bag and divide it out. Beans and rice can be cooked ahead a couple days. Meat might be cheaper from a local farmer too or flour and sugar from an Amish community. So many ways to get the good stuff and not hurt your budget!

    To enlarge on what Megyn said about cheap foodstuffs… rice and beans (even lentils), eaten together, contain all the amino acids for your body to combine them into proteins. That’s how many undeveloped civilizations have survived with very little meat…. Corn and beans have less combined aminos but they still make a decent quality protein. The best combo is rice and soybeans, which is what the Japanese have survived on for millennia…
