Hannes Strydom’s Codeine ring: Carte Blanche producer unravels mystery, O’Sullivan misled.

  • In a story that ranks among the most extraordinary covered by BizNews, Springbok Rugby World Cup 1995 champion and pharmacy group proprietor Hannes Strydom took a massive gamble when hiring renowned forensic investigator Paul O’Sullivan. Strydom sought to establish his innocence amidst serious allegations broadcast by M-Net’s investigative programme Carte Blanche. Following an extensive investigation, with O’Sullivan’s backing, Strydom asserted his innocence in an as live interview with BizNews editor Alec Hogg. Strydom, who reported a loss of R50 million, attributed his misfortune to a purported internal criminal ring, which he claimed had also misled the team at Carte Blanche. However, the situation took a dramatic turn when O’Sullivan discontinued his services a month into the investigation due to unsatisfactory responses from Strydom. Two days thereafter, Strydom passed away in a car accident. In this revealing interview, Carte Blanche producer Nicky Troll offers her perspective: she suggests that it was actually O’Sullivan who was misled by Strydom, whom she implicates as the mastermind behind an illegal codeine distribution network. O’Sullivan, citing his devout Catholic beliefs which discourage speaking negatively of the deceased, has declined to comment on Strydom. - Alec Hogg

      What was Hannes trying to achieve here. Buy a few months to do what exactly….. Maybe liquidate assets and find a non extradition country to move to….
      If so, then his “lie” makes sense…
      O’S was either in on the lie or a victim himself.
      I met Hannes once, more than 20 years ago, but I have no opinion of either these two gentlemen. Based in his track record I find it hard to accept that O’S is a tool. On the other hand I have lost trust in mainstream media and have the perception that they will spin stories to their benefit.
      Conclusion: the fourth estate needs to step up and win back respect through good journalism. Telling us that a manufactured consensus, “97% of scientists bla bla” is just not a convincing argument.
      In this instance the Carte Blanche comment and explanation seems very plausible……even convincing when one adds in the fact that O’S cuts ties with Strydom days before his accident and death.
      Where do people get the money to feed their codine addiction through the consumption of cough syrup. All that sugar will be worse than the harm caused by the codine. This seems like a rather stupid drug of choice. But then again,stupid is as stupid does.

      I think the final word on this story is a long way off. I think Alex acted appropriately. There is big issues with Nickys naritive it does not pass the smell test at all. Her report feels much more like a scripted naritive then it does a actual story. The evidence she presents she presents as an neat forensic naritive. A complete accounting trail accurately documenting black market transactions. Illicit smuggling simply does not follow this pattern. The fact she put forth Zero hard evidence in terms of inventory or eye witness accounts from end users are telling omissions. This story feels like a fabrication of evidence to fit a prescribed naritive. Also the time line of the Story does not make sense. the document pile Nicky presented on top of the production work needed to produce this program simply is not in line with reality. There is to mutch documentation for the time line she has mensuoned as the investigatory window. If she started to gather docs, investigate the facts work through, conclude and then on top of this produce the episode I would not expect the process to be complete by this early stage. Ask any person with a few years of production experience and they will tell you that anless Nicky was on Adorol and did not sleep for months this story cannot possibly be on the screen by now. Its mutch more likely that the evidence in documents are stage props. I think wat we have here is a hearsay story that has been scripted and propped to fit with the Cart Blach brand

I would love for you to explain that logic and to then understand how you think that functions.
      To get back to the question at hand
      I can see obvious problems with this narrative Cart Blanch producers are coming up with. You or anyone else are of course free to follow your own interpretation tempered by your own sensibility and experience. If you feel that what has been presented here by Nicky is a fair representation and that the case she makes is a water tight representation of a plausible reality then so be it.
      My suspicion is however that the inherent problem within the container of the Cart Blance production will be broadly challenged. There are obvious problems here and I will contend there is nothing wrong with scrutiny. You can and you should make up your own mind. From your reply I conclude you have made up your mind and of course I respect your position. • @shortMario
      @shortMario 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Not sure we are actually seeing the full picture via the Carte Blanch lense on this. There are problems with the narrative they present. The chief of which surrounds the nature of the alleged crime and how the alleged criminal party has accurately documented the full extent of the alleged smuggling operation. The intire case seems to rest on this document trail at least vis a vis the defence that Nicky has presented here. On the face of it I can understand why O Sullivan a forensics investigator would see red flags all over this. The document chain seems to be to clean and out of character for a smuggling operation. The story represented by Cart Blanch also feels mutch more like a scripted naritive then it does a actual investigation. The story beats are simply to formulaic with the cast of characters neatly following a overly simplistic story arc. The overall arc follows the Typical structure cart Blanch more or less relies on in every corruption case they expose. I also take exception to the public good naritive that Nicky is evangelising. In the greater sceme of problems concerning public goods. This story is a nothing burger. South Africa has mutch more pressing issues concerning the public integrity that warrants investigation. This is simply not a truth to power moment Paul on the other hand has had many truth to power moments. Nicky's investigation as is the case with most if not all Cart Blance investigations is paramount to chasing rabbits while the dragons ravage the land. If I correctly follows Nickys complaint it boils down to an appeal to be above scrutiny combined with a brittleness regarding the integrity of her own credibility . She is on the one hand saying that her facts speaks for itself and on the other saying that an aposing voice should be deplatformed for daring to challenge the vary facts that she claims is water tight. The very voice of the very entity that she is aiming her allegations at. I for one would have expected a different approach and would have expected her to welcome a rebuttle from Hannes and his proxies. In stead she called for silence from the accused. There is mutch more to this story then O Sullivan mearly being duped ... There is smoke here thick toxic fumes as far as cartBlanch is concerned, my suspicion is that at the hart of it we will find a raging dumpster fire. I would not be surprised if O sullivan turns out to be the very person to expose it. Perhaps he will take a break from slaying dragons and hunt a rabbit for himself.

    I’ve long maintained that he simply offers a free platform to populist conservative agenda drivers without an iota of journalistic oversight, ethics or integrity. His platforming of the bufoolionaire Hersov is particularly nauseating.
    Typical of Hogg’s questionable methods he had the absolute audacity to try to put you on the spot and demand you explain yourself and your research instead of having the integrity to explain why, and apologise for not doing his homework before interviewing Strydom and O’Sullivan. This is what Hogg does. Gives a platform to shady characters to polish their PR.

      Respect and candor? Seriously?
      Respect is not exhibited by dismissing someone with, "This is not a pissing contest".
      Candor is not disrespecting someone who has the facts at hand with such a comment because Hogg could not explain why he didn't.
      Carte Blanche gave Strydom the right of reply, which he refused. Carte Blanche always approaches the subject of their investigations for their side of the story.
      Hogg got the story horribly wrong because he didn't bother to do the professional thing and actually do ANY research before the interview and, as is his wont, simply offered Strydom and O'Sullivan a softsoap platform to say whatever they wanted without any journalistic checks or balances, trashing the CB investigation in the process. The very least he could do was give Nicky the right of reply.
      What he should have done is make an unreserved apology to Nicky and his listeners. By not doing so he shows his lack of professionalism and integrity.
      If you think CB is so wrong and Alec Hogg so right, why the hell do you think Paul O'Sullivan has gone to ground? With his reputation in tatters, why isn't he shouting how right they are, and how wrong Nicky is, from the rooftops?

      @@shortMario O' Sullivan has told so many fictions in his career and Biz.News hitched their colours to O'Sullivan's mast during that time. Its not surprising that they would be hostile to media who impugn O'Sullivan but what is need is a more open and audited investigation where the public can draw their own conclusions. It seems that Carte Blanche have every right to question O'Sullivan's version of events. As we all do, even in the face of all the previous hostility and censorship that any questioning of POS has brought to people.

      Nicky actually harmed her naritive much more then she helped it. The naritive that she tried to sell is unconvincing and is an obvious fabrication. The document trail that her intire defense is based on cannot possibly hold water. Black Market sales are not meticulously recorded so as to be audited later. No one is going to want to pay tax on black market money or have a paper trail that exposes a crime that is a mile long. It's a preposterous proposition. Also if you want to prove a case like this you need an inventory trail and actual eye witness first hand accounts of the point of entry and preferably some end user examples. Did Cart Blance track down the end users and if they did why not present this as part of the defense . I will tell you why because it opens the door for 3rd parties to also interview the witnesses. There is something completly different going on here that is not remotely attached to Nickys naritive .

    I don't agree with her. It was an interview. That is what BizNews does.... interview and give right of reply. Different format to Carte Blanche. And good..... not many places you can go to for a public righ t of reply when Carte Blanche publishes about you. Perhaps it differs journalist to journalists, but I remember hearing things some years ago and thinking I would hate to be caught in their cross-hairs. At the time it definitely came over that the sensationalism of a story mattered too much. Maybe things have tightened up since then. Who knows.....

      The paper trail legitimizes the transactions by presenting them as sales to legit businesses.
      Otherwise how do they reconcile their books? Purchases, inventory, sales, bank statements reflecting income on these sales etc?

    • @shortMario
      @shortMario 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @veziqiniso4425 what are you talking about. If you hide a transaction the way to do it is to forge the transaction to resemble a legitimate one. For example you sell 500 bottles of vitamin supplements to a non existing entity or you enter hundreds of insignificant entries on a range of fake products. Or you simply avoid the invoicing situasion completly so as to not face tax situasions. Alternatively you open a bank account in a non tax jurisdiction and invoice yourself for consulting work. that you then outsource to multiple non existing consultants yourself . Its not rocket science . You can also have a zero document regime and simply purchase political cover so as to avoid prosecution. The last thing you do is create a paper trail that document the actual thing that's the thing you are doing. You could also if you want to really be on the line generate invoices substituting your cash sales for sales implicating legitimate goverment entities as your final client. Goverment entities are so inept no one would ever be able to untangle it. This story is a complete fabrication or the late Hannes rest his soul was a complete muppet. I am sorry. I sense that Alex is very suspicious of the intire situasion and is probably going to keep digging.

The previous CEO (the ring leader which O' Sullivan was investigated) had his own network of dealers which he supplied. Nicky's investigation starts after he left. If true it seems as if some or one of the pharmacies dealt to black market actors the same product. Might it be that the CEO had direct influence at this pharmacy. Thanks Alec. You obviously found yourself in an awkward spot; between loyalty to Paul & his credibility, & the trust that you placed in that (and Hannes' hiring of Paul to clear his name), and the veracity of the Carte Blanche investigation; the direct involvement of Hannes in this criminality isnt however clearly evidenced, other than inferrals from the continuation after Moutons departure, and the inferral that the fund from these illegal sales were accruing to Hannes' business, hence the invoices presenting thexssles as legitimate sales, and the assumption thatvfunds werent been siphoned off from the business by an organised criminal network inside Hannes business; so there are still loose ends.

    This woman reacts strangely to the query around legitamacy "... lots of leg work ..." , " ... OSullivan looked at different time ..." "... look at all my many boxes ..." fact is, she does not once base her story on facts arising since carte blanch piece, and kick heels in and only relies on the controvertial piece as if it is the gospel. Not being able to put my finger on it, but it seems reliance on "facts" that are common or applicable to both sides of the story and then she concludes "... we stick to our story ...". Not convincing at all. Maybe Strydom was the master mind since 1995, but this woman fails proving anything. Shame that osullivan has such skew morals, "... not talking about the dead ..." seems more damaging than to state what is true. There is much more than meets the eye.
