Diver Decapitated by Great White Shark in Tobari Bay

  • In this video, we discuss the tragic incident that occurred on January 5, 2023, in Tobari Bay, Mexico. A 53-year-old man named Manuel Lopez was decapitated by a 19-foot-long great white shark while diving for mollusks. This was the first fatal shark attack of the year, and it has raised concerns about the safety of local fishermen who depend on the sea for their livelihood.
    We share details of the attack, including eyewitness accounts of the shark impressively ripping off Lopez's head and biting both shoulders. We also discuss the advice from local biologists, who recommend that divers not wear black wetsuits, which could be mistaken for seals, and to paint white stripes on their suits to deter sharks.
    The video also highlights the challenges faced by local fishermen who rely on the sea for their income. The presence of sharks has meant that many have been staying onshore, and the government offers a stipend to supplement their income, but it is often not enough when there is no income from the sea.
    We discuss the possible reasons for the shark attack, including the turbulence and noise caused by Lopez while harvesting mollusks that may have drawn the shark to him. We also note that experts have pointed out that this type of attack, biting around the head and shoulders, is extremely rare.
    Finally, we share the response from fishing organizations who have called on the government to purchase devices that could deter sharks, such as shark shields or devices that emit electrical impulses. It remains to be seen if any action will be taken to protect local fishermen in the future.
    The incident is a tragic reminder of the dangers faced by those who make their living from the sea, and it is a call to action for governments and experts to find ways to mitigate the risks of shark attacks.

    Sharks have the most sophisticated sensory array we know of. There are no "mistaken identity" attacks. There is simply opportunity and curiosity. They know we're not seals, but they also know we're seal-like. The only reason we aren't actively hunted every day is because we're unfamiliar and thus deemed not worth the risk. On rare occassions, that judgement changes.

    Same thing happened to a guy in Fort Bragg, CA, almost 20 years ago. Randy Fry was his name. He was abalone diving, and a shark bit his head off. The crazy part.. they recovered his body the day of the attack, but several days later his head was found by a beachcomber. It had washed up on shore. I have kayak fished and dove for abalone many times in those waters.. never saw a shark, but can't help but wonder if they have seen me

    A shark shield is not going to deter a shark that is moving at speed and goes for a bite on the head. A head bite is NOT rare in the deeper waters, the shark is going for any bite of whatever is in the territory that made it angry, and this happens to seals as well as humans that are diving with this exact consequence.

      @@toscadonna I disagree. One diver recounted him and his mate were just about to start getting back on the boat when he felt an object go past him rapidly, and when he looked over at his friend, his head was gone. If you watch other videos where a great white approached a spear fisherman who was on the bottom, it went for his head. Sharks aren't dumb, and they see very well. I know! A suit of plated armor, like the knights used to wear into battle!
    Some "shark whisperer" types wear a kind of chain mail but thats not going to cut it if people want to get serious about safety. So a suit of armor, with the helmet AND sword AND shield is my suggestion.
    Or- and i know there was a spoof comedy video that played w a similar idea- a coyote suit, like they have for dogs(my bestie's little dog has a bright pink one, with a wee matching cap) which is like a coat and neck gaiter and headpiece with long (usually plastic) spikes sticking out so a coyote can't grab on. (My friend's dog wore it once then stood and refused to walk. Idk if she was uncomfortable or embarrassed, she doesn't like looking silly or being laughed at.) They are not cheap, but less than a suit of armor i should think. You might have to raid a castle- or a museum- for the armor.

    @BMAN-eb4jk 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    Great whites are more of an interesting case of misunderstanding in my mind. They have gotten the reputation for being the killers, but this isn't quite the case. Great white sharks may attack the most people of any shark species, but they're NOT responsible for the most fatal attacks. Sharks are primitive creatures and can't really determine if something is edible or something they want to eat until they take a bite out of it. In many attacks, the shark mistakes our swimming and coloration as a seal which is their ideal prey. Often once they take a bit out of someone whether it's a limb or another part, they usually realize that we are not seals and leave. Of course, there are exceptions to the rule. But globally, sharks kill about 10 people every year while we kill millions of sharks a year.

      I'd say, not a case of mistaken identity here and a dark wetsuit îs totally fit for diving around sharks, what you want to avoid îs wearing bright colors like white, yellow or orange, which stand out to the highly sensitive rods in the shark's eye.
      Most likely the diver entered the hunting territory of the animal and since he was fishing, the shark went to get rid of what it perceived as a hunt competitor (inter-specific competition, for biologists).
