You hit the nail on the head with body fat stores. People rarely 'run' the steep hills during an ultra anyway so you're pretty much always going to stay in the fat burn zone. To train this better, you not only need to train at lower intensity, but also fasted. It is no good starting an ultra sucking on gels and expect the transition to fat burning to go well! You need to train it, and it's always best to start a long run fasted and keep the intensity low. Killian Jornet doesn't even need water let alone food on long runs, this is because he has trained that way for years.

While it is true that I usually walk hills, I discovered that in the past I my walking pace was often still too fast! So I started practising monitoring my breathing and HR till I found the walking pace I needed to stay in Z2 for each gradient 5, 10, 25% etc. As far as training fasted goes, it isn't for me. After all, being fasted simply means starting with lower liver glycogen. Muscle glycogen remains the same. So there is a performance hit without a big benefit. I am never sure what lessons we can really draw from Killian or other elites because genetically they are so far removed from us mortals.

I like your combination of trail footage and info graphics; it makes for entertaining as well as educational viewing 👍If you don't mind me asking, what do you use to film while running -- a Go Pro, cell phone camera, etc?

Thanks. A GoPro Hero 11 outdoors. A phone sometimes for indoors

Interesting. Wish my body worked that way.

Don’t your body switch back to using glycogen once you start eating carb?

Your body will consume muscle glycogen as long as it has any. Eating carbs adds glucose to the blood which slows the use of liver glycogen.

You really should get around to mentioning Keto, about forcing your body to become fat adapted, about a few really good endurance runners (Zach Bitter for example) that run 100 miles depending on the utilisation of fat, although they do start to eat carbs in the week or two before the race. I did my first Marathon at age 75 with very few carbs along the way.

Yes, I have heard some things about it, but I have no experience of it so I don't feel I can offer anything on the subject. Personally I know it isn't for me as I like a balanced diet that includes potatoes and wine and beer ;)

@@satiricalrunner Well go for it and tell us about it. Took me 6 months to get into. What many call a balanced diet is full of starches, sugars, carbs, that your body can't deal with long term Professor Tim Noakes?

@@satiricalrunner Now that is an extremely uninformed and ignorant thing to say about something you admit you know nothing about.

@@bouffon1 I have seen a lot of these guys. Low carb. High carb . Fasting. Vegan. Gluten free. Carnivore. Always with a secret truth that mainstream science with its pesky control trials refuses to accept. And each of these guys always, always has a book to sell, or a coaching course or a supplement. Sorry, I won't join any of these cults. Eat whole foods, mind your calories and enjoy :)
