  • Tolstoy wrote this story during a significant period in his life. In the 1870s, he was experiencing a profound spiritual crisis, which would later be documented in his work "A Confession," published in 18842.
Interestingly, Tolstoy held this short story in high regard among his own works. While he came to disavow some of his more famous novels, he considered "God Sees the Truth, But Waits" to be one of his greatest literary accomplishments. In his 1897 work "What is Art?", Tolstoy specifically mentioned this story as an ideal example of "religious art," placing it in his highest category of artistic production.
