How To Prevent Doe Factory Deer Parcels

  • The problem of too many does on deer hunting parcels goes way beyond the numbers. In fact, too many does is one of the most common problems that keeps landowners from reaching their quality herd and hunting goals. what is a doe factory? A doe factory occurs when landowners create the perfect conditions for Summer fawning grounds and the population of does explodes to unmanageable levels. Too much Summer food and great fawning cover will lead to the potential of hunting lands that have so many does, that there is little to no room left for bucks. The doe factory problem is an original concept of mine, that was recognized, experienced and defined while I scouted 100s of deer parcels for my career. A doe factory is a very real and severe problem on deer hunting lands, is here is how to make sure that you never experience it where you hunt...

    Even though I am a young dude without land I still think this video will help me in the future! One anecdote I can see is the summer food not making a difference. It's amazing when I visit the U.P to hunt how desolate it can be in the winter. Go up in the summer and I think a whitetail could eat just about everything and that's without agriculture around! We never make doe factories up there but we also don't take any does.. The winter dictates how many we see it feels like.

    Too many does in an area means the numbers need to be controlled. Ive seen properties close to towns that have so many does that you can see deer that were hit by cars along the highway any time of year. If you plant early and keep the majority of does in your area flowing to your property, The bucks will be swarming your place come fall.

There is a destination food source across the road so there is no need for me to waste my time feeding them. Results have been good so far. Adding switchgrass into the old plots this year. Jeff, you're content is simply the best I've seen. Been following solid for about a year now. One question... with some quick background. I own 120 acres 2.5 hours north of you. 60 acres were clearcut 3 years ago. The wet ground is heavy with ash, basswood, maple, and hardwood re-gen, some of it well over my head already. The rolling highground is hardwood regen but sooooo slow growing, some only knee height yet, with briar and nut sedge shading things out. My land is in MFL and forester mandated 300 mixed conifer per-acre planting in 30 of the 60 acre cut. What can be done cheaply to ensure the conifers take hold under shaded conditions of briar, and the nut sedge as tall as me? Lots of stumps and tops in there yet which prevents a tractor to be used for anything. Shot my best bow-buck here last year!!! Thanks Jeff for any advice you can give me.

    • @whitetailhabitatsolutions9751
      @whitetailhabitatsolutions9751  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks a lot!! Boy that's a tough one BUT, white spruce and white pine can grow in the shade for years...then explode once they find some sun. Also, carpet squares cut to the middle can be placed over Conifers. That limits growth around them and holds moisture to the ground.

    • @saypuppy
      @saypuppy 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@whitetailhabitatsolutions9751 thanks again Jeff. Forester recommended those 2 and black spruce. I'm not a fan of spindly black spruce, so my gut was saying to toss in the white pine where briar and tops can protect them and the white spruce in the unprotected areas. If I didnt have to buy so darned many trees I'd rather hire you to consult to see if what I've done here and the dozing coming this summer is the best strategy for us. This will be our 3rd food plot, each under 1 acre, in a line of movement connecting with massive oaks in between, apple trees on opposite end, all in a bit of an arched line on the first 60 acres, leaving the north 60 (where i killed the 10pt) as a wet and wild bedding area for bucks. :-)

    I'm trying to grock my situation. N/E Texas and was pasture with plenty of small water and has no cropland within a mile; surrounded by mixed hardwoods and/or pine plantations.
    I've resigned myself to wild hog affects on my 100 acres. Food plots, regardless of size, are at high risk of disappearing overnight (a 3rd of one survived to this season). So, I'd like your (or anyone's) thoughts on my thinking.
    A. If we are getting mature bucks on cameras somewhere on my property (day or night) at all times during the year, aren't we in pretty good shape?
    B. Shouldn't I concentrate my efforts on blind location and access, fenced supplemental feed stations, and creating strategic paths of least resistance for game?
    C. Would spraying grass in areas and mowing herb regrowth late summer create a "food plot" of fresh young forb regrowth?
    Thank you for enlightening us on the things we knew for a fact that just ain't so.

    We haven’t even focused on plots due to the high stem counts and I don’t want to increase our numbers because we are saturated with doe and fawns already.

A power line runs through the center of the property where we plant 15-20 acres of cool season food plots. One great test is that on just about any deer hunting parcel anywhere, is that you should see more unique antlered bucks thru a quality trail cam strategy during the entire season, than does and fawns. At least 90% of those bucks should be see at least one time or more throughout the season, during the daylight.

    I definitely have a doe factory. I have an half acre food plot and most evenings there’s 15 plus does in there eating. Nothing but small bucks that rarely show up even at nite. When is the best time to harvest does without over pressuring the food plot? I live in a neighborhood with nice bucks but nobody shoots does...

    What is your take or management protocol with areas that have common buckthorn (Rhamnus cathartica)? I have a small parcel on a bur oak ridge where buckthorn is starting to take over the understory. It’s great cover, but my understanding is toxic and not a browse plant for deer? There are some small pockets of common chokecherry, but very little other understory woody plants.

    I have 62 acres mostly hardwood with two fields, a 5 acre, and 3 acre field. What would be a good doe to Buck ratio? Are you booked up yet for the year? I’m here in Missouri would love to have you walk my land.

    • @whitetailhabitatsolutions9751
      @whitetailhabitatsolutions9751  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Andrew...really tough on the buck to doe ratio because it can be heavily skewed one way or the other during the year. October/November/December are really the only months that matter, so what I find is that a great rough ratio is that you should have around the same number of does and fawns...as unique bucks that you capture on trail cam and in person sightings. For example I will see over 30 unique bucks throughout the hunting season and that is actually more bucks than the combination of both does and fawns that I see. On a side note you should see at least 90% of those bucks in and around daylight at least once...for many bucks more often than not.

    First you say, a good property doesn’t have bucks on it during the summer, but then you say you need to make room for the bucks on your property. I assume you want to make room for them during the fall and winter only, but what would be the reason they would stay out during the summer? I don’t have a doe factory on my land.

    • @whitetailhabitatsolutions9751
      @whitetailhabitatsolutions9751  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      You only want the bulk of the buck herd on your land during the Fall. Bucks need completely different habitat types from Summer to fall...does do not. Bucks need high over story, shade and summer food during the Summer...they need thick high stem count cover and Fall food during the fall. Bucks shift about a mile on average to their Fall Hangouts from their Summer habitat. Too many does block them from doing so on a given land.
      Here is a video that may help you out..

It doesn't have much hardwood and has lots of autumn olives, greenbriars and undergrowth. Actually, I hunt for the meat. I would love to shoot 10 doe a year. In fact, I have taught my sons to shoot the yearlings and leave those big pregnant doe alone. Shoot the big doe you kill 3 deer with one shot. The little ones are easier to clean too. So I will be likely to do all the things you say should not be done. I like seeing the big racked bucks and I let them all go by.
