Layne the beatboxer arranged this one, again Eli (Ellie) did the lighting. Layne took every advantage to deal his sense of humor on the members. Cesar getting a gut and not getting the man of his dreams. Eli losing his hair and putting Geoff in the matching out fix with Ashley also choreographed Geoff's hair flip. Geoff's wife Kathy was in charge of tossing the flower peddles in front of the fan. Ashley also did If I Were A Rich Man/Girl with them.
That is the great and wonderful Layne Stein, who also arranged this piece. For the record, sometimes low percussive sounds are Layne, but Geoff definitely contributes. Great reaction! And if you really want your mind blown, they just dropped a cover of Enemy, featuring AleXa. I’m still trying to wrap my head around everything they did.
Layne talked to some of us patrons on a Zoom call while he was working on the arrangement. His first choice of featured artist was Ashley. He had arranged for her other performance with them - If I Were A Rich Man - and didn’t think he had completely shown off her talents. They just released another one of his arrangements today (Enemy) and featuring AleXa (recent winner of the American Song Contest). When her people contacted VoicePlay about her wish to work with them, Layne had this arrangement about done and she loved it. No matter who arranges or is featured, everyone always sounds like a tight member of the group. That’s part of the magic (and hard work) of VoicePlay.
So glad to see you back with Voiceplay! Great reaction. I've learned never to look away from the screen, there are so many quick visuals. Ashley's wonkey side eye, her stroking Eli's bald head, the shapeshifter blouse and shorts on Geoff, the rat crawling on him.... and in some of their numbers, it's the way they look at each other, comic, affectionate, whatever. I recommend Hoist the Colours (Pirates of the Caribbean 3) next, then the Wicked Medley. As others have said, Geoff Castellucci does solo work, begun during the pandemic. His most recent is Ain't No Sunshine, which is outstanding. Thanx for the reaction, I really enjoyed it!
@@christinestromberg4057 I love that look that Cesar gives Geoff as well. But I also love the look that Geoff gives to Cesar while Cesar screaming out to kill the witch.
Layne also arranged/did the video on this one. He and Geoff are founding members. The one they dropped today, Enemies, is also one of Layne's arrangements... and beyond keeping the drums going, he does some amazing additional percussive sounds.
@@bobcieslinski Voice Plays version of Enemy is awesome. Also Voice Plays version of Dream On by Aerosmith... Voice Plays version of Carry On My Wayward Son Geoff ( Jeff ) Castellucci is always fantastic ..The Dragonborns Come... Tennessee Whiskey...the theme song Halo from the video game Halo...please do more Voice Play. They are known as The Theater Kids. They are a very theatrical acapella group. Nobody does theatrical acapella better than Voice Play.
I mentioned this on a different video recently, but VoicePlay is dificult to breakdown simply because there is so very much happening at any given moment of the song. It's one of my favorite things about them- that complexity that they put into their music. And it's why I always appreciate the many reactors with strong music backgrounds who can explain pieces of what's going on; no one picks up on everything, but everyone hears something different to point out to those of us without that background. By this way, back left is Cesar De La Rosa, barit-tenor and more recent member, then Ashley Diane (she's also featured in their cover of If I Were A Rich Man/Girl), then Eli (rhymes with 'jelly') Jacobson, tenor. You already know Geoff, and Layne Stein is the vocal percussionist. In earlier videos you may also see J. None (baritone), Earl Elkins Jr. (high tenor, often bearded) and way back you'll find Tony Wakim (baritone, he currently co-owns Pattycake Productions, a video production studio, with Layne).
I especially like the ending because I can hear the parts of the different songs. In Disney’s version it all just kind of blended together. And I I just couldn’t hear any of the words.
Another top tier VoicePlay cover is their theme to _Halo._ Even if you are not a gamer, you're bound to be blown away -- everyone else is. Plus you'll get some history of the group as well in an addendum they added to honor a deceased friend.
Oh, and you wanted names. Top to bottom, left to right-Cesar De La Rosa (he’s listed as a baritone, but he has been hitting some super high tenor notes lately), Ashley (for more of her, check out If I Were A Rich Man/Girl-some serious flexing in that one), Eli Jacobson (ELee-he also does the lighting for most of their videos), then Geoff, of course, and Layne.
This is pure genius and I’ll never get tired of this. The amazing arrangement, the vocal skills and all the details in the performance. Like Diane’s “death” face, it’s sooo Disney. And Jeff’s rat. And so much more. Genius.
One of the things I love about VoicePlay (and there are many) is their clarity. This is not the first song where I've struggled to understand the lyrics at some point in the original. The fun they have with these Disney covers is unmistakable and always packed full of interesting harmonies etc, making it necessary to listen several times to pick up on the many nuances of their performance! Loved the reaction, thank you! 🙂👍
Brilliant reaction. It's a great sign if another musician /song writer is amazed and enjoys them.. I play vp several times a day... Just starting to get my head around their new one, Enemy. Not my genre normally... However how can I not enjoy it when vp have made it..... Mind blown.
Mans is playing Camillo the shapeshifter, that's why he sings the scary verse as Bruno but steals Isabella's line looking like her. It took me way too long to figure out. I love the glances they all gave him, especially Ashley, she looks so pissed even though it was her idea. Great acting from everyone, especially Cesar with the Latin dad energy. The rat shriek was actually the stock goat scream sound effect they edited in at the last moment for shits and giggles, though Geoff did a great take himself. There's a lot of great details in this arrangement, for example listen closely to the BV's after Cesar says "umbrella" both times, in the beginning and in the mashup at the end. That is slightly illegal from a copyright standpoint but hilarious nonetheless
Nice reaction! VoicePlay just released a brand new song an hour ago called enemy. It is fantastic, your mind will be blown. I think you’re ready now you should probably check out Geoff Castellucci‘s channel. It is his solo channel and you will be floored! Thank you again.
beard = cesar, bald = eli (pronounced L-E) geoff = geoff (pronounced jeff), beatboxer = layne. also that last sound from layne is based on a technique called throat bass.
Because the flower petals kept falling to the ground, they ended up using an industrial fan plus a leaf blower to get the petals to stay in the air long enough. But that made the air kind of blast at them and they ended up filming it in double time and then slowing it down for the video. It was fun to watch, in the behind the scenes, Geoff and Ashley singing that section in double time. They don’t like to just lip-synch as it doesn’t seem realistic, so they sing as they’re filming just not at full volume. They just can’t miss with their Disney covers. But by far that is only part of what they do. There’s not a whole lot of genres that they do not cover. The video immediately preceding this was from the video game Skyrim and they were in full costume. I’m not a gamer but the music is spectacular. Enough that I actually went and downloaded the entire original Skyrim score because it’s so amazing. Then they followed Bruno with a cover of Aerosmith’s Dream On. It takes a lot of guts to take an iconic rock song like that and tackle it as an a cappella group, but they pulled it off. I’d like to second the suggestion for you to check out Geoff Castellucci‘s channel. His cover of Ain’t no Sunshine by Bill Withers is jaw-dropping, but my favorite still is his cover of Misty Mountains from the movie the Hobbit. It really showcases not only his deep tones but his range. If you haven’t seen any of his videos before, in all but one of them, he arranges for four or five part harmony and covers all of the parts himself both vocally and visually. He clones himself and somehow manages to interact with those selves. It’s pretty uncanny.
Jeff has his own TH-cam channel where he shares how he is able to sing so low. He even gives you tips on what things to do to get to that level. Genuine dude.
This is one of my favorite Voiceplay covers. Top left is Caesar de la Rosa (baritone and secondary tenor 2), Top middle is guest artist Ashley Diane, as you know, Top right is Eli (Eliezer) Jacobson (Tenor 2), Bottom left is Geoff Castellucci (Bass), and bottom right is Laine Stein (Beat boxer extraordinaire). Voiceplay with Ashley did another cover this time "If I Were A Rich Man/Girl" that you should cover sometime. It's equally amazing.
The beat boxer is Layne Stein, and yeah, he's starting to do some really interesting and innovative things lately. I really like that "helicopter sound" thing he does in Dream On, and then he tops that in Enemy by doing _several_ new things, including a weird bass-heavy transition that almost sounds like a drumset swallowed a warthog, or something, I don't know; it's cool, whatever it is. Ashley Diane also worked with them on If I Were a Rich Man/Girl.
I think you would really love some of Geoff's "solo" work where he multi-tracks himself doing all the parts. Remarkable. Try Blackbird, 16 Tons, or High and Dry.
Thanks for your reaction! So glad to see you reacting to Voice Play again! Layne, the beatboxer, also arranged this one (He and Geoff take turns doing their arrangements). Layne is also a very talented singer and violin player; and also writes songs and plays with former Voice Play member, Tony Wakim, in a studio they own outside of Orlando Florida. As you may already know, members of Voice Play and many of their guest performers have worked for Universal and/or Disney theme parks so their covers of anything Disney are the best around! Please check out "Hoist The Colours" and "Little Mermaid Medley" if you like Disney. Layne plays the violin while beatboxing in their cover of "Warriors"- amazing! Any song you check out from them is a treat--you won't be disappointed.
