In my opinion the best skater of all time. He deserve the gold medal nobody worked harder than he did and it showed it also showed that Scott Hamilton doesn't know what he's talking about.
He was just referring to the fact that he didn’t do the second quad in combination and left out the second triple Axel. He wasn’t criticizing it, just acknowledged that he was skating for 2nd place in the long because that was all he needed to win gold. Many judges still had very high regard for Plushenko artistically so that plus more technical difficulty could have allowed Plushenko to win the long. I wouldn’t have agreed with this-the only program that remotely rivals this in terms of artistry is Paul Wylie’s “Henry V” program from the ‘92 Olympics but that one still had a couple technical flaws, so this from Yagudin still has no overall equal ever-it’s just that Hamilton was only commenting on his downgrading a couple elements technically

He's my favorite of all time, the artistry and technical skating is above any single male skater that I've seen. It's 10 years later and this guy's skating just amazes me and the level of it. And honestly, never a doubt that he had the gold. Soon as he finished his program, it was so obvious, did not need to wait to hear the scores to know this.
@@primalcritters I completely agree, this is one for the vault, to be stored away as perfection, and I honestly thought he should have gotten more 6's for artistry, but as they said he's the first to get 4 of them for a male skater, so at least there was that. Now had timothy not messed up the triple axel, I think you would have seen one change, I think he would have beat Plushenko, but Yagudin would have still won the gold even with holding back on the technical. The reason being is that in the case of a tie the artistry breaks the tie, and Yagudin had that sewn up. So he was smart to not go for the extra jump. Again for me the artistry should have been 6's across the board.

I think some contextualisation may be needed for those who are too young to remember those Olympics because Scott's comments are confusing: 1) Yagudin was a real celebrity at the time. Russian skaters were already judged more favourably back then compared to other skaters as there was a Russian clique in this sport, a clique that was dismantled only after these Olympic games. On top of that, Yagudin was the darling of judges and audiences, and you can see why: he was handsome, artistic, emotional but also powerful, he really knew how to sell his programs and how to engage with the public. 2) These Olympics were really about Yagudin and Plushenko. Unless one of these two was going to mess up really badly, no one else stood the slightest chance for the gold and silver. And neither of them messed up in the LP, so Timothy Goebel, for all his jumps, was never going to get anything better than the bronze. To think or hope otherwise under those circumstances is simply ludicrous. Look at how hard the judges fought to keep Plushenko in the cards for the gold even after he fell badly on his 4T in the short. 3) Yagudin skated last and didn't make a single mistake (unlike all others). Back then the marking was done by subtraction (you were penalised for mistakes), not by addition like today (where you can fall or step out and still win). If he had skated earlier in the group, maybe the judges would have left a bit of room for the others in case they were going to perform an amazing program, but as such, they had no reason to downgrade Yagudin. And since Plushenko needed not only to win the LP, but also Goebel to come 2nd (which we have established was impossible given the judges' bias and Yagudin's flawless performance), there was no point in placing Plushenko first in the LP as that would not have been enough for him to win overall. So the judges went with the flow, pleased the crowds and gave Yagudin not only the gold medal, but full glory too. Overall, it was a deserved gold, no doubt about that. The commentators are American, so I can understand if they saw a glitter of hope for Goebel to get the silver, but, as long as Yagudin skated clean, to entertain such hopes was pointless. Personally, I think Goebel should have got the silver and Plushenko the bronze because the former was indeed superior to the latter, but by no means was he ever able to beat Yagudin, as Scott strangely repeats several times here.

It's hard to believe, but Yagudin never became Russian champion. After all, in his career he was a 4-time world champion, 3-time European champion and Olympic champion. On the international stage, he won everything there was to win, and yet he never became Russian champion. For me, Yagudin is the most outstanding skater in history anyway.
Because Russian nationals were on side of Mishin, his former coach who did not like the fact, that Alexei left him and said he can assume his career as a figure skater is over. After knowing all that, I just can't watch none of his students programs.
Best men's gold medal performance ever! I don't know what Scott is talking about- Plushenko had 2 clear mistakes and while Yagudin took out his second triple axel and no mistakes. On top of that, Yagudin has a million times better artistry. Terrible commentating.
Scott Hamilton doesn't know what he's talking about. I've heard him say dumb things about other programs with other skaters as well. I'm surprised he's a commentator.
It wasn’t terrible commentary and Scott isn’t stupid. In the old scoring system you never knew how the judges would go on any given night. Sometimes it was highest technical content (Timothy), sometimes it was reigning world champion (Evgeni), and sometimes it was best artistry/clean program (Alexei). We’ve seen Olympics and worlds where these were evaluated differently. You never know. Look at men’s 2010 and women’s 2014 (yes I know under current system, but still). Give him a break.
Scott Hamilton really needed to stop talking. We already heard that he was pulling back and didn't go all out. Yet he kept harping on it and almost ruined our enjoyment of one of the best gold medal performances ever. Even after he was crowned gold medalist!
Did Scott Hamilton have doubts in Yagudin's victory? Yagudin in his performance combined what Hamilton considered unreal: high level of technique and high level of artistry. Scott himself, being a champion, could make only 3 kinds of triple jump, and always underestimated the importance of choreography. Yagudin is the best!!!
Scott only won his Olympic gold in 1984 because Brian Orser placed lower in the Compulsory Figures. Otherwise, Orser would have been Olympic champion. Scott was off his game at those Olympics except in Figures. And he didn't know what the hell he was yapping about in this Men's LP in 2002. Yagudin and Plushenko were always going to be 1-2 barring major meltdowns.
je viens de le revoir ce soir, j 'en pleure.....YAGUDIN: le plus grand.patineur...de tous les temps, inaccessible, inégalable, merveilleux: comme il manque à ce sport!

Scott’s commentary was pathetic. Alexei performed the greatest Olympic men’s long program ever. He had to eat his words after the judges rightfully awarded him the Gold medal!
Bit surprised to find myself joining in the STFU HAMILTON comments, since I normally don't mind commentators. But at 4:56, here Yagudin was doing amazing footwork and Scott was yapping away. Ugh. I saw this at the time, and I do remember Hamilton using the word "conservative" a lot, but I've also always remembered it as being an excellent performance, and watching it again now I got chills. The position he was in at the time was, he had done an epic short program while his closest rival (Plushenko) had fallen, and so all he had to do to win was skate a clean program. And that was clearly his intention, by not doing a risky move he didn't need to do. I don't think he was "conceding" anything. Grr.
Of course he was the gold medalist. The commentator couldn’t understand what he’s watching. Started watching figure skating after 2018 Winter Olympics and all I could watch was Yuzuru Hanyu till I see this program. Among all the greatest performances Yuzu had given I still wanted to put this one above all. I thought maybe the style of Plushenko can be inherited and carried forward, like Yuzu did. However Yagudin is the only one in his style, in history. Too sad his figure skating career was too short.
Summer Day Well, this program is relatively clean compared to the programs we see nowadays but this program was a downgraded version with only 1 triple axel. The original layout had two 3As.
I agree this program was not has “hard” as some of the programs nowadays technically. But under the judge system then, he didn’t play safe. He was told by his coach he could win with one quart, but he went with two. The judge system really didn’t encourage technically hard programs but emphasized on “no miss”.
The commentator was a real idiot. He must be really blind:)) This program became a pure classic and is still considered one of the best if not the best men's program of all times.
I'm happy and proud to have seen him perform at Stars on Ice many years ago in Canada. He came down to the ice on a rope from the ceiling of the ice arena! I have never even seen this on TV! I got up and shouted: "Alyosha, Alyosha!" and cried with happiness that I saw the great skater on the ice in reality !!
it may be technically a little more conservative but it was still very good. as far as artistic, i feel this is absolutely wonderful. the choreography is beautiful.
Yagudin could have stepped on any stage as a principal dancer. So strong, dynamic and fluid. The same cannot be said for Scott Hamilton who is clearly an idiot who was lucky to win gold in Sarajevo with that hideous disco explosion.
After the program you can hear Tarasova telling him: "I haven't known you are so strong". Who knew that that would be his last OG😔... He was already constantly in pain because of hip displasia(. The doctors could not get any proper diagnosis from his X-rays, it was only after the Olympics he learned about this problem, and that he probably had it since childhood. Those amazing jumps he did - he paid for them with his health. During one interview his mother was asked - if she knew about her son's health condition from the very beginning, would she still encourage him to go into figure skating. She said nothing...
Agree love Scott but his entire commentary was wrong tonight. At one point he was suggesting this program would be behind Timothy. Not even close. He needed to shut it a bit more. This program was a masterpiece of jumps and choreography and performance by Sexy Alexi.
He honestly wasn't putting him down. He is explaining to the audience the reason for the changes, and as elviade said, this is not an easy thing to do, to change a move on the fly. These skaters have this program down cold, every second of the music and knowing where they should be after each jump. And it may not seem like much, but a second less because of one jump and needing to correct the speed somewhere else. Scott has always respected other skaters and believe me, he always respected Yagudin and I always heard him praise him. And it was true, this was conservative in some places for Yagudin. And I do think this is what shows the maturity to know where to pull back. You have to understand that not everyone who watches skating understands what's taking place. It's not like he's commentating saying, well I think he should have done this here, or I would have done this here. I've had to hear that from a few commentators who did tennis, and that is bad commentating, but not what Scott was doing here.
Я честно не понимаю на что там комментаторы надеялись, что Ягудина третьим что ли поставят?)) или втооым после Плющенко который завалил короткую?) тут уж как говорится, без всяких нареканий золото 🥇
Best Men's FS at the Olympics ever! I want some of whatever Scott was smoking that night. As if Alexei was ever in any danger of losing to Timothy (much as I love Tim) nor to Plushenko who is superb but artistically not quite in the same league as Yagudin. . What a drama queen Hamilton is.
I don't know. I kind of feel like Plushenko had a different kind of artistry. More theater less balletic grace. Still, I agree that Yagudin deserved the gold here. What a fantastic skater, so graceful, powerful and musical. And uses every inch of choreography and blade to create visual impact, meaning, and effect.
I agree with you. Artistically, I don't object to the second mark at all, but I felt he needed the second triple axel to deserve 5.9's straight across the board. I felt 2nd in the free skate would have been fair, but he played it exactly right. I guess he knew something we didn't.
Aleksei Yagudin is the best skater of all time and this performance is the best in the history of men's figure skating.

Браво Всей команде!!!
Алексей твою победу я пересматриваю каждый день, а прошло уже 22 года
I can’t stop rewatching this amazing beautiful program. Simply the best.
I loved his artistry, the choreography, his theme, his music. Beautiful, elegant skater.
I think some contextualisation may be needed for those who are too young to remember those Olympics because Scott's comments are confusing:
1) Yagudin was a real celebrity at the time.
Yagudin’s gold medal is pure justice. But Plushenko said that Yagudin hired a magician to make him fall…
BEST MALE SKATER EVERRRRR❤🙏LOVE ALEXEI!

Если бы он не ушел, мы бы уже не помнили, кто такой Плющенко

The very best of male figure skating!

Юля Карамзина YES YOU ARE RIGHT HE IS THE BEST
Scott only won his Olympic gold in 1984 because Brian Orser placed lower in the Compulsory Figures. Otherwise, Orser would have been Olympic champion. Scott was off his game at those Olympics except in Figures. And he didn't know what the hell he was yapping about in this Men's LP in 2002. Yagudin and Plushenko were always going to be 1-2 barring major meltdowns.

Summer Day Yagudin played it safe and got his reward.
I agree this program was not has “hard” as some of the programs nowadays technically. But under the judge system then, he didn’t play safe. He was told by his coach he could win with one quart, but he went with two. The judge system really didn’t encourage technically hard programs but emphasized on “no miss”.
The best!
The commentator was a real idiot. He must be really blind:))
This program became a pure classic and is still considered one of the best if not the best men's program of all times.
Лёша умница!!!!молодец!!!!
Смиренным Господь даёт Благодать!!!
it may be technically a little more conservative but it was still very good. as far as artistic, i feel this is absolutely wonderful. the choreography is beautiful.
I thought this program was much better than Plushenko's...
Yagudin could have stepped on any stage as a principal dancer. So strong, dynamic and fluid. The same cannot be said for Scott Hamilton who is clearly an idiot who was lucky to win gold in Sarajevo with that hideous disco explosion.
Сотый раз смотри и сотый раз восхищаюсь❤браво
Смотрю, и каждый раз дыхание перехватывает, слезы, и гордость, за него, него, з а Лешу.
Шедевр, картина маслом!!!!
This program was a masterpiece of jumps and choreography and performance by Sexy Alexi.
omg I wish Scott would just shut up throughout this performance. Like he's clearly the best of the night, stop putting him down
You said it. . . Scott was a complete ass with his commentary here!

Margaret Tudor
I don't know. I kind of feel like Plushenko had a different kind of artistry. More theater less balletic grace. Still, I agree that Yagudin deserved the gold here. What a fantastic skater, so graceful, powerful and musical. And uses every inch of choreography and blade to create visual impact, meaning, and effect.
I think he is the best skater of all time. 🏆🎖

They skated from the heart.
Самая красивая программа и победа.
I agree with you. Artistically, I don't object to the second mark at all, but I felt he needed the second triple axel to deserve 5.9's straight across the board. I felt 2nd in the free skate would have been fair, but he played it exactly right. I guess he knew something we didn't.
Леша,ты лучший на все времена!!!!!
Why does everyone's arguing?) In 2002 Yagudin was stronger than Evgeni. But the last one is wonderful and he got his Olympic gold. Everything is fair.
