    Those are killer arrangements. I had the chance to sit in on one of Clare's clinics at the U. of U. and he just cracked me up with his humor. Monster musicians.

    Clare Fisher was an exceptional musical artist with his unique approach towards harmonic and temporal displays and structures. His book “Harmonic Exercises for Piano” is a brief sketch and testament to his musical prowess as a music educator, pianist, orchestrator, and arranger. I hear the influences of Gil Evans and Antonio Carlos Jobim.

    I remember Clare telling me that he often preferred to keep the bass on a solid harmonic foundation - so that it provided a stability to the creative (genius) harmonies above the bass that he was so well known for. Of course you also have the complexity of the latin rhythms added to the unique harmonies that only Clare could come up with.

    Trying to find more Clare Fisher he's an absolute wizard! The kind of musician Chick Corea was a fan. Props to the original sound engineer! Even though this has a bit of loss due to streaming and previous analog to digital conversion the sound is still great.

    It's interesting to hear some Fischer repertoire for which I am familiar with recordings, only with some slightly different personnel (WDR Big Band) and arrangements (no doubt still by Clare Fischer specially for the occasion). I didn't really have the time to spare, but having stumbled across this I couldn't stop watching it until the end!

  • @ThePhilBest
    @ThePhilBest 6 ปีที่แล้ว +8

    Whaaat? I've been lamenting for years that of all the magnificent jazz Clare Fischer gave us, there is next to nil video to enjoy! Just stumbled across this - don't know why searches and auto-suggestions didn't bring it up for me before now. This absolutely deserves to be discovered and watched by all the fans of the best vocal jazz groups, latin jazz, and big band jazz. There was never a collaboration as far as I know, between Manhattan Transfer, Chick Corea's group, and one of the world's best big bands - but this is at least as good as if they had! This video proves beyond doubt that we are sorely deprived by not having an abundance of live video of Clare Fischer projects to feast on!! Is there anything more out there languishing in archives that needs to be retrieved and posted?

    When studying arranging with Phil Mattson, we attempted to analyze a couple of Clare's charts. Pretty funny debates ensued a couple times. Though Clare was his hero, Phil sometimes really wanted to find traditional harmonic function in a few places where I think maybe Clare intended none lol

    • @geekjazz8277
      @geekjazz8277 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Ha!! You are probably right, but also having studied and being with him, Clare loved using the traditional, but messing with it through extended non-harmonic tones, etc., ala Hugo Wolf, et. al.

      I can not believe the comment about the La voices . That person has no idea what they are speaking about and has no idea the amount of difficulty it takes pull those kinds of harmonies off half assed , let alone great like they did. ( Some people's kids!)

      take off the plugs .I've never heard him soloing mechanically, from his tenure with Tjader on to this period with a european band.
      maybe micro-dosing might help
