    Since Covid, I’ve been teaching in an ASN school and I have only ever taught in mainstream schools before. Very few kids have listening difficulties but all of them benefit from signing, and I’ve been learning from scratch. Can’t believe it’s taken me this long to start learning!

    Great video as always! question: is photo a directional sign? If I want to say "a photo of you" do I sign it the same way except initially moving the dominant hand away from the relevant person's face? thanks!

    • @CommandingHands
      @CommandingHands  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for watching :) Yes, it can be used directionally. The movement of your dominant hand (fingers coming together) implies "copy". Point your palm in the direction of the person to start the sign.
      This same hand movement is used in many signs that have "copy" in the meaning, e.g. photocopy is the same movement on your dominant hand but your non-dominant hand is held palm facing down, then move your dominant hand down several times away from your other hand. (I hope that makes sense! Some signs are quite difficult to explain).
      Additionally, you may also see the sign for "camera" used for photo too, depending on the signer.
      Thanks again!

    • @danakirsh

      @@CommandingHands thanks! I think I understand the sign for "copy", but would be good to include it in an office signs video, if there isn't one already

    Sorry if this is a stupid question, but are the signs mirrored to the hands I should use?

  • @danielstephenson7558
    @danielstephenson7558 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Does sign language change over time because of changes in the way we do things? I wonder how many people wonder why the sign for 'camera' is done that way, in the same way that people don't know what the Save icon on most applications refer to.

    Hi Dan, I was in Iceland the other day and saw someone using BSL to communicate. It made me wonder.. are there signs for brand names? Also, how would you go about signing "is this the one you want/would like?" It could come in handy if need to use BSL with a customer in work.

    • @CommandingHands
      @CommandingHands  3 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      Thanks for watching, great question!
      In formal situations go with fingerspelling brand names (and many other proper nouns). In everyday conversations, people will use signs for brand names especially the the well known ones. For Iceland I've seen the sign for Ice, sometimes followed by the letter L. Some of the signs may be linked with advertising, e.g. the sign commonly used for Asda is two taps on the back pocket. Others are linked with the branding, e.g. McDonald's is two index fingers forming the outline of a giant M.
      To sign "is this the one you want?", I'd point at the item and follow it with "want", raising your eyebrows & tilting your head to show it's a question. Your eye gaze towards the person implies "you" but you could sign "you" before "want". Point at the item, then sign you want (don't forget your facial expressions to show it's a question).
      I'm planning to do some videos on signs used in shops, broken down into different types of shops. I'll hopefully get them online within the next couple of months.
      Thanks again ✋

    can confused also mean something akin to disorientated?

    • @CommandingHands
      @CommandingHands  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes it could do. A tip to remember this one is to imagine the hands are clouds and they are hovering over the brain, a bit like brain fog!
      You could also use the sign for "dizzy", which is an index finger extended, held about shoulder height, palms facing towards yourself. Then form some small circles. Facial expressions should match the sign to avoid confusion with other signs (so try to look dizzy). The index finger represents a person.
      Thanks for watching :)

    Does the hand that you use for a sign matter?

    • @madeline569
      @madeline569 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      From what I have learned it seems to be everyone has a dominant hand when signing with two hands like sign for "how" or "Internet" where one hand does a movement and the other stays, it's your dominant hand that does the movement. If you're left handed and do all the signs mirror image deaf people can still understand and if you finger spell with opposite hand it's still perfectly understood.

    • @madeline569
      @madeline569 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The only thing that I think might be slightly confusing is if you switch up your "dominant hand" frequently as you're signing, that could be a bit disorientating but I still think you'll be understood
