    Have you ever bought an “essential” travel item you didn’t need? Share your story below!

      The silicone travel bottles, leaked all my shampoo and conditioner. I think the flat pack refillable ones you showed might work better if opening wide enough to pour into or even the regular plastic travel variety cylinders they sell at dollar store or pharmacy work better

      Yes absolutely, even though I love a back pack for the plane, I'd have to say that I never use the back pack at the destination. Honestly I end up just using a cinch / draw string back pack that I got for free at a gym I went to for a week. Another item I brought that I never used was a beach towel. One essential I love bringing is a portable speaker.

    Disagree on the neck pillow. If you don’t need one, that’s great, don’t bring one. But I have a hard enough time sleeping on planes to worry about how much space I might be taking up with the things that will help me sleep! And I can’t fall asleep without something cushy to rest my head on. A balled up sweater isn’t enough if I’m sitting upright. The pillow you get from the airline only works if I’m at the window and I’ve got a wall to lean on. A memory foam neck pillow will support my neck while resting no matter where I’m seated and (since I sleep on foam pillows at home) feels familiar enough under my head that it helps lull me to sleep. Also, foam pillows compress pretty well, so they don’t have to take up THAT much space. My current pillow has a carrying case to stuff it in that compacts it down to about a 4-5inch ball and has a thick nylon strap and buckle that lets me strap it to a backpack or luggage handle.

      I was just going to add this, I need a pillow in long flights and it compresses into a small sack so I believe 100% worth it. I also don't wear the neck pillow the way most people do...the opening is always on the side not the front of my face. That's how it feel comfortable.

      Yeah these lists are always very subjective. I didn't take a neck pillow on my first long-haul trip overseas. We took planes, trains, ferries...and I was always bobbing awake. Haha. Will stuff that neck pillow in next time!

    I have one of those hanging cubes and would never use it for flying. As a carryon only flyer, it takes up way too much space. But I did use it while staying at a beach house for a week (we drove) and it was convenient and held all my (Summer) clothes for the trip

    I have a cotton infinity scarf that has an inflatable neck pillow inside. I like it because 1) I wear it as a scarf when boarding, 2) it keeps my neck warm on the long international flights, and 3) because the pillow is in its own pocket zipped inside the scarf, I cannot lose it or have it fall on the floor while I am trying to sleep. But sometimes I skip it, as once I am at my destination, it is just too bulky to wear.

    I agree with almost all the things you mentioned except the hanging toilette tree bag. I have this and I love it. I don’t know what toiletries you travel with but it’s not all fitting in a little liquids bag. I put all my bathroom related item in this hanging bag, hang it on the bathroom door and everything I need is there for me when I need it. I put oral care, my travel size shampoo,conditioner, body wash, body scrub, lotion, razor, shaving cream, extra blade, hair volumizing foam, dry shampoo, hairspray, heat protectant spray, hair oils, Bobby pins, scrunchies, makeup removing wipes, face wash, moisturizer and first aid stuff. To some people that may be a lot but I feel like that’s normal stuff to take on a week or longer trip. It all fits in the hanging bag, divided into sections and everything is organized and I don’t have to dig through multiple bags to find things. I also use a jewelry organizer that’s small and compact bc I like having all my jewelry in one place, I just think having things organized in their own thing makes your vacation better and makes packing and unpacking quicker. Hotel rooms can get messy quickly so having things organized allows for less time looking for things and more time enjoying your vacation

    • @ItsTheKellys
      @ItsTheKellys  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I agree with wanting to stay organized but I don’t check bags so I’m limited to the 3-1-1 liquids bag. I’m going to do a “what’s in my toiletries” bag during my trip, so you can see what I bring for my 1-2 week trips :)

    Totally agree on that huge hanging toiletry bag and huge sunglasses case. I use a MUCH smaller hanging bag. Also agree on that neck pillow. I brought one on our trip to London last year and never used it once. Still had to drag it around all the airports. I also seriously overpacked for that trip. Lessons learned! We are going to Australia next year and I’m going to pare down a lot when packing.

  • @susanmcalister8524
    @susanmcalister8524 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Totally agree with all you had to say. I only travel carry-on, so if it doesn't fit in my suitcase, it doesn't go. I love my compression packing cubes mainly because they keep me organized. I have an inflatable neck pillow which I often don't need but I take it because there are a few times that it was necessary. And it's small when deflated it takes up virtually no room. My favourite liquid containers are the pouches that collapse when not full. I rarely have them full, so it works well for fitting in a quart bag.

  • @cinderellallanto5630
    @cinderellallanto5630 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Oh my couldn’t agree more! Esp the dispenser. Though, like the other comments I DO swear on neck pillows, I even have them in my car for taking short naps, it’s an ESSENTIAL for me. Cant recommend, as it truly depends on the user. But I was laughing coz I do loose some neck pillows in the airport and I get so upset as I truly need it.

    Hi Lauren, I am a recovering over-packer and LOVE your channel!!. 5 years ago (before you came into my life) I traveled to Europe/Italy and brought a 24 AND 27 inch suitcase - AND a million clothes I did not wear. Then I went to Hawaii and "downsized" to a 27 and 21 inch and struggled. I have "tried" the closet and makeup bags - mistakes.
    About a year ago, you came into my life and SAVED me from myself! LOL.
    I am still a work in progress, though I have taken a 6 day Spain/Morocco trip and added a 13 day Mediterranean cruise to the back end of it, and two 3-island Hawaiian trips with my July light expandable bag (LOVE IT - thank you!!) and a carry on/usually a backpack. I am still on my journey for the PERFECT amount of "stuff" and personal item to carry - and take inventory of what I use and what I don't to continue to learn and grow.
    There is nothing worse than shlugging all of my crap around the world.
    I enjoy your videos - thank you for taking time to pour your travel wisdom into us!! You are valued and appreciated. PS. I still need help taking less! :O Love, Bev

    Aaah! You got me! I have right now in my Amazon cart one of those hanging things for my kids . I even found another item that will be the little metal rod stand thingy as when I go to my mother in laws place, she gives us absolutely no place for freakin clothing storage… ( or the luggage) so I just thought I would buy the perch and those folding shelve thingys and be done. But. Where am I gonna put 4 of those hanging perch thingys in that room? We won’t be able to walk to the freezing cold tiled bathroom with those things everywhere.
    Ya. I’ll just buy the packing cubes.. each of us in a different color and just deal…

    I've really tried to start using the hotel items and really just pack fewer toiletries in general. If I forget something there is always a place to purchase what I'm missing (or if visiting family I use Amazon to send my preferred items and have them waiting!). And regarding jewelry -- after so many trips packing items I didn't use, I've nearly eliminated bringing more than what I am wearing. Neck pillows -- totally agree! I don't like those hanging toiletry bags. But they do have their place. Cruise ship bathrooms or anyplace where you think may not have enough vanity space. Then you can hang it on a door hook. Even if you bring it empty and fill it up later.

    I tried a travel pillow once and left that puppy at the hotel for the trip home. Nope, I just rolled up my sweater after that. I do travel with a hanging toiletry bag but mine folds up to about the size of the first pouch you showed. I don't like stuff sitting around on the counter so I just put things back in the bag after I use them and it doesn't clutter my counter. I don't travel with shampoo, conditioner or body wash - they are always provided and I'm not picky. I usually only take the jewelry I'm wearing, maybe an extra pair of ear rings but I have lots of little pouches that I put that one extra pair in. I do travel with two extra pair of sunglasses and two extra pair of readers (other than the ones I'm wearing). I have sunglasses with little reader bi-focals in them and since I buy cheapish ones, they do tend to break. I've also been known to break a pair of readers and I can't see anything small without them. I just put them in the small cloth pouches they come in and tuck them into shoes in my suitcase. Never even considered that fold out bag thing, I just put things in drawers or the closet.

      I agree, I love my hanging toilet tree bag for the same reasons, everything is divided up into sections. Oral, body, shower, nighttime etc and it goes back into the bag when I’m done making for clean countertops and quick packing, I do bring my own shampoo, conditioner and body wash bc I have been to hotels that have horrible stuff (one hotel just had a 3 in one option) but it all fits nicely in the hanging bag so I think it is an essential if you have a lot of bathroom items that you want organized & all in one place

      I travel with shampoo because 1) the hotel does not usually provide enough for ALL of my family to wash their hair and I hate feeling like I have to skimp to make it stretch, etc. and 2) when I go camping (where I use the same toiletry bag) There is no shampoo at all provided. But then I am travelling by car and not plane most of the time.

    😂 I have had the 2 smaller sizes of the L.L. Bean hanging toiletry bag for like 15+ years. I love them. I do have a few other options now, like the béis hanging shower caddy and the Dagne Dover Seoul dopp kit (also has a little hook inside for hanging). I love them all, i just pick based on which luggage I bring.
    I have gotten those suitcase looking hanging toiletry bags like the one you pictured (as gifts), but literally never even tried to use them. Donated them all. But i pack my hanging toiletry bag with any non liquids, like toothbrush, floss, comb, solid bar soap, mini solid deodorant, tweezers, sponge or bath pouf, nail clippers, bandaids, travel washcloth (rolls or folds super flat, absorbent but dries fast), hair brush etc.
    Once at destination, I just the TSA liquids bag in with it.

      I have never understood the need for a travel pillow, especially since you have your clothes with you! Some just wad up a jacket or sweater and that's fine but especially since I've spent so much time in India I've long grown accustomed to traveling with a pashmina. It serves as a shawl on a chili flight, a sleep mask on a bright flight, and a pillow in any case.
      Because I purchase them in Asia the best with silk and pashmina are rather inexpensive so I do tend to buy the best. A synthetic will show wrinkles but a true pashmina is good to go straight off your flight!

      @@ItsTheKellys oh, absolutely. The toiletries bag is basically a personal item. I could see using it for a 10+ day trip somewhere in a checked bag, but only because I’m too lazy to consolidate my mousse and curl cream if I don’t absolutely have to. The sunglasses case is only feasible if you are really worried about glasses being crushed OR you want to display them at your destination for some reason.

    Hey! I have that "big giant sunglassy thing"! Caveat, I've never once considered using it for travel. It hangs in my closet as an easy way to reach my daily prescription/sunglasses and then pop them in an individual case. I like the design but it is _not_ for travel.
    Thanks for poopooing that hanging shelf monstrosity. I saw an ad for that online and made a note never to click on it so that the algorithm did not think I wanted such impractical garbage!
    I've never even seen that shampoo dispenser. That is ridiculous! Am I bougie about my shampoo? Yes, but, two points... Although I do have various sizes of silicone "go-tubes", which I love, when I have to adhere to 3-1-1 on flights I simply purchase a travel size of a shampoo and then refill that already labeled bottle. (who knew that travel size shampoo and conditioner bottles were already labeled!?!) Also, years ago my stylist convinced me I should never shampoo every day and when I travel I often go a week without shampooing. Your hair and scalp adapts quickly, producing less oil and especially if you have long hair you either braid at night or tie it up in a bun and you have wonderfully wavy curls the next day! I always get compliments on my hair when I travel and when I tell them I simply toss it up in braids they don't believe me. _No, I do not travel with a style posse!_
    Thanks for another informative 🧐 and fun 😝 video!

    OMG, every single time I see one of those "travel products you NEED" videos, I have to laugh! Gadgets galore, but smart? No. Thanks for pointing out just a few. That hanging shelves thing is not something I ever bought, but only because it seemed like too much material (adding bulk) and it stacks vertically, which, as you said, doesn't fit into the suitcase! I have traveled a couple of times with a small pillow that works well for me. It's supposed to hold a small blanket, but I replace the blanket with an extra outfit, and it's a packing cube/pillow that I don't have to fit into my suitcase. I bought the Gemz shampoo & conditioner for my next trip that I'm excited to use, so thanks for that idea. Here's an extra, but strictly cruise-related that I will NEVER use -- a shoe organizer, but used for toiletries that can hang on the bathroom door. No. Just NO! I won't do it! LOL! You continue to come up with the best videos, Lauren!

I decant shampoo and conditioner into repurposed 2oz containers, one is the cleaner fluid bottle I was given when I got my ears pierced, the other I think was a toner sample.
