- Ralph Vaugh-Williams (1872-1958): English Folk Song Suite (1923)
Alexander Shelley, Conductor
Nürnberger Symphoniker
Klassik Open Air, August 2017, Luitpoldhain Nuremberg
What a brilliant rendition of such a lively, uplifting Suite, bravo to the Orchestra and to you, @Alexander Shelley, you're so gifted !!!!
Why is a conductor talented?
@@lordprotector3367Because they do more than just wave their hands (from an audience’s perspective). They’re the ones guide the group to move at a collective pace to make sure no section is dragging or rushing. They dictate the musicality of the piece by bringing out certain lines or embracing a certain tonality of a piece.
For example, this piece, I personally like this rendition because of the tempo chosen by the conductor because it has a sense of British stoicism. Others in the comment have noted that the pace seems too fast to their taste. Being the conductor lets you dictate the tempo of the piece based on the parameters set by the composter. Sometimes the composer won’t specify a tempo marking of like a quaver to how many BPS but will instead write suggested feelings the piece should invoke like “allegro con vivo” or “allegro con spirito.” Based on that, the conductor has to interpret the intended speed, which is why sometimes a piece may should different based on two different conductors of the same ensemble.
Huge debt owed to RVW, A.L LLOYD, Butterworth amongst others for preserving these wonderful folk songs and themes.
Great performance. Love this piece.
One of my favourite pieces, I love the arrangement with the whole orchestra so it’s such a shame it’s hard to find a recording that plays the first movement with more than just woodwind - glad for this
i love this piece.
Love the choice of tempo! 😍 Most renditions have been too slow for my taste but this worked brilliantly.
The only thing that threw me off (apart from the missing second movement) is the seating arrangement. Like why are the French horns sitting next to the flutes? 🤨🤔
Wonderful music!
Lovely!
Makes me want to grab my cutlass and shiver some timbers! Adding to Jeri's Impavida Playlist.
Wonderful!
Nicely played but where's the second (slow) movement?
Dos’nt matter, they are all having a good time! Wish I was there!
great playing!!!
What happened to the second, slow, movement?
Easily the best performance on youtube of this piece. from 1:04-2:12 you can hear "I heard the voice of jesus say" played on the bass - th-cam.com/video/uqF4N7rdV-w/w-d-xo.html
Vaughn-William wrote his "Five variants of dives and lazarus" based on this theme:

The 2nd movement is missing here though.
Thank you so much for pointing me to one more worship song!
Try the Boston pops Orchestra, Arthur Feidler, or the London Philharmonic, Sir Adrian Boult.
What? No low brass footage?
Seems that the Germans love English Folk music?Ya das is gut!
4:45
Although the performance is very clean, the tempi are considerably faster than I'd prefer.
3rd movement too fast
