Rykard wasn't a particularly hard boss to beat, but lore-wise and aesthetically, he is DEFINITELY one of top 5 coolest bosses in the game. Anyone else noticed that he has 7 fingers on each hand, all adorned with gold rings even. Truly, a power-hungry, blasphemous abomination.
Yeah I just noted that his hands are basically those giant Carian manor hands, which I guess makes sense because he is the son of Renalla. Don’t know if those unattached hands are just that sloughed off or that members of the carian royal family eventually turn into giant hands.

so far, the boss transformation cutscenes have been universally the most impressive. Radahn, of course, just flies away and comes back like a wrecking ball

Rykard is in charge for the most part but the serpent has affected his personality, bringing forward all his worst traits and turning him from a charismatic leader with noble intentions but a tendency towards cruelty into a cackling madman who’d devour even his own siblings if given the chance.

@@SorowFame It seems like the opposite. The serpent is in control most of the time, then relinquishes control to Rykard when backed in a corner. Rykard makes a lot of noises that hint at him being awakened after a long period, and even seems to see the tarnished for the first time, when he says, "very well".
Father Rykard is such a great father. Man wakes up from his power nap to discover a lost tarnished and immediately invites him to join his family. Truly a role model for us all.

@@ATthemusician The main benefit is that he's immortal without the Golden Order. This means that, if he succeeded in devouring all of the gods including the death rune, he'd still be immortal while everyone else has their mortality returned.
I always liked the way Rykard says “family”. Like he’s struggling to speak in his normal voice over the snake that ate him. God this character is so good.

He then took somewhat controll and from that point he consumed champions, growing stronger and stronger. That is more what I interpret It. In the beginning cutscene you see his head being devoured. Then It's implied the volcano manor invites tarnished and other Warriors to be devoured by him, to grow stronger.

Rykard is such a cool character; he became 'blasphemous' because he led a revolt against the tyranny of the gods and their Golden Order and was considered a hero, but became corrupted when he fed himself to The Serpent in an attempt to grow his power.
Was the serpent a giant? We see Rykard’s severed head in the opening cutscene with a snake, presumably the god, coiled around it. I’m guessing the snake started small and gradually grew larger over time.

This boss immediately became the creepiest enemy in the game when he said "Very well..." in that voice as he woke up. There was just such an assuredness in that deeply insane utterance, as of some unfathomable force of nature, who sees the world in a way you could never comprehend, waking and training its far-seeing eyes on your tiny being as it prepares to casually brush you from existence as easily as it breathes. Sure, it's not that strong, but that kind of insane, menacing confidence isn't seen very often.

As much as Dark Souls 2 isn't my favorite, Straid of Olaphis calling you a "feeble cursed one" is still one of the most memorable lines in all of the games.
I love how when he pulls out the sword you can see his face looks very discomforted, despite being a snake he still has very human reactions to pulling a sword out of you
There's so much about Rykards design I just love. Like how his arms and legs stick out of gashes in the snake's body like the violent synthesis of their bodies raises questions about who's really in control of their body, is it Eiglay or Rykard, is he more serpent or man. Also how his face only takes shape after we incapacitate the snake
i LOVE how the serpent mouth has to actually open wider at the end to allow for the cross-guard to slip out. Honestly haven't been this impressed with a very minor detail in a long time.. this game has tons of them. I respect that attention to logic in these animations.
Powerscaling wise, Rykard has to be up there in strength.. I know prime Radahn is the strongest demigod with Malenia the only one to match him but has any other demigod seen Rykard in this form? This new Rykard is specifically a form he wants to use to kill the outer gods which are way more powerful than everyone else.. The developers of the game even give you a literal God killing plot device weapon on this stage to beat him lol he seems like his strength is severely underrated by the fanbase

@@konighartzderiv.4898 If we ever fight him in a DLC he’ll be stronger purely from a gameplay perspective because that’s usually how DLCs work in these games, they assume we’ve already beaten the game and scale accordingly. Miquella could not stand against the swordplay of his sister who trained in it for much of her life to help steel herself against the Scarlet Rot ravaging her body. Nor could he stand up against the might of Radahn, a warrior who broke armies and forced the aforementioned Malenia into a losing battle that forced her to bloom for the first time. Canonically I don’t see Miquella being the mightiest demigod, at least as he was. If they want to elevate him to that level through some transformation, I’d imagine the intervention of some other Outer God or force that would propel him to those heights. It’s not enough to simply wave your hands around and say that he “hides his strength” when we aren’t really given any reason to think so.
Normally I don’t like these fights that force you to use a certain weapon, such as Yhorm (soooooo trash after all the hype around him) but this one was pretty good
Any other game developer would’ve just given Rykard an “evil” voice modifier. Fromsoft did it right though. This is exactly how I would imagine this guy sounding. The hurried breaths, the strain in his voice from being such a mess from fusing with a serpent, the fact that he doesn’t give a shit about sounding out the words completely and I absolutely loved the sword he pulls out his throat complimented by the few skeletal human remains that fall into the lava and immediately melt. It really adds to his presence of being such a massive entity when he pulls out that giant coolest looking 2 hander ever paired with the human remains falling out. God I love this game so much. I don’t think I’ve ever been into a game this much since I was a kid and got hooked on WoW as my first MMORPG. I really hope they continue to add content, either in the form of DLC’s or otherwise. I’d love it if they just kinda mashed together some of the stuff from Bloodborne and Sekiro in the game. What I mean by that is, I’d love if they created a “Land of Reeds” DLC or a “Back to Yharnam” DLC. I can definitely see the land of reeds one happening.
This game is already setup for more dlc or sequence with it story and lore ! There are unseen outer gods , unvisited mysterious lands from far ,miquela awaken ? Rykard or immortal serpent king reborn ? Rise of Dragon race or Giant ? Or even like ds3 dlc which make supprise npc gone mad and become final boss , possible melina with the hint when you have frenzied flame ending , she swear to hunt you down for revenge

Reminder that all the "Champions" before you working for the Volcano Manor had no idea Rykard was a snek man. They all thought they were going to see a noble God before getting vored. All those veins you see on his sword are actually previous Champions, still conscious and very much in pain, regretting every decision they have ever made that led them to this.
I think the creepy thing about Rykard is that he actually doesn't across as a bad guy. His wife seems to adore him, we have no evidence that their marriage was anything but loving, his adoptive daughter is creepy but sweet and he clearly seemed to care about. The actual manor is rather homey considering the situation. He would be an OK guy if he wasn't an insane snake monster.
@@rosesweetcharlotte By all accounts, he was indeed a somewhat decent person (though being an inquisitor and Gideon's description does hint that he was never the nicest guy), and the whole point of his claim to Blasphemy was "Ok, yeah, if following the Gods means turning on your family and going to war with each other just to see who's stronger, then I'll gladly be a blasphemer." And he even had a whole army of dedicated followers. But when he fed himself to the serpent he just became a completely irredeemable monster and everyone except a select few turned on him, only to be devoured, that's why you can find the Serpent Slayer in his bossroom, because his followers were killed trying to use it against him. Also, Tanith was working as a dancer in a foreign country when he met her, and then he married her. Given that he's royalty, and a literal demi-god, him marrying a foreign commoner does imply that he was indeed in love with her, and she gladly returns his affections (though given his current state that's not exactly a good thing)
This has to be the most morbid, disgusting boss in the whole game. I thought Godrick the Grafted and his grafted scion army was disturbing, but this is an entirely different tier. He also sounds like Palpatine after Anakin kills Mace Windu, except he talks like that permenantly. It's great.

We all know Miyazaki is obsessed with poisoned swamps, but there is a concerning trend growing with throwing in God devouring body horror monstrosities in his games too now. Someone needs to tell this man to chill.
Fun fact: this voice line wasn’t in the script. From Software was on a zoom call with George RR Martin to discuss concept art, when he forgot to mute his microphone while going on a bathroom break. This is what was inadvertently recorded during the call. Shigeru Miyamoto liked it so much he kept it in the game
I’m glad they did it like this. With this voice, you can just hear how all semblance of his humanity is gone, and how he has forsaken everything. He believes himself to be all powerful, yet he can hardly muster a coherent sentence. I love the feeling this gave me when I learned the lore.
I like how in the Ranni ending you're essentially just slaying Rykard for no reason, even though you both have the same exact goal. The player and Rykard have more in common than Gideon in the Age of Stars lmao.
Similar goal but not the exact same. Rykard says he wants to liberate people but in reality he wants to be the one dominating and be god, that is why he wants to kill and consume god/gods. Ranni isn't trying to become god, she is trying to remove the influence of the Greater Will on the Lands Between and says its done to protect mortals. Possibly though it is to make way for another possible god (The Dark Moon), either way Ranni isn't trying to elevate herself to godhood. Rykard and Ranni are both working towards ousting the Greater Will but their motivations and end goals are radically different. I don't think Ranni would at all approve of Rykard and his ways and Rykard would rather consume Ranni than work with her.
@@NATIK001 Ranni only used Rykard for they have some common goals of ousting the Golden Order to the ground. She's only got rid of herself with him once he has become unserviceable because of his continuous blasphemous acts. Ranni has already told you that she merely uses people to achieve her goals whether they are of a trustworthy sort or a complete knave.
I’d say Rykard is closer to the Frenzy Flame’s goal. The lord of the Frenzy Flame essentially wants to exterminate all like while Rykard wants the serpent to consume everything. Ranni wanted to restore the elden ring but send it far away into the stars so no one could abuse it again. She also wanted the Dark Moon to rule over everything.
The whole villain has a very “old school humanity lost” feel, like you would see in movies from the 80s or earlier, like Dr. Oz, MODOK, or for lack of a better example, Mr. Electric.
Rykard creeped me out a lot. There’s something so unnatural about the way he talks that so perfectly fits with the fact he’s merged with a FUCKING SNAKE. Really messed up

The Fingercreeepers are created with a blasphemous ritual. They are blasphemy against the Two-Fingers; a demonstration of Rykard’s ability to imitate something conceived as holy.
That last shot with the Tarnished standing before him looks so cool. I often get summoned for Rykard and when the host doesn't skip the cutscene it makes me feel like a side character assisting the protagonist
Idk how to describe it but this boss gives me theme park ride vibes. Like one of those interactive rides where they strap you in and you ride past big screens and hot air blows at you to help build the immersion. When rykard enters the second phase and the ceiling area starts turning red and you hear that crazy ambient sound that plays, and then he leans in close to look at you randomly throughout the fight, the skulls raining down from the sky on you an as magma spreads across the ground. It's not a hard fight by any means, but it is absolutely one of fromsofts most atmospheric and on point fights. Blew me away the first time.

Rykard is in charge for the most part but the serpent has affected his personality, bringing forward all his worst traits and turning him from a charismatic leader with noble intentions but a tendency towards cruelty into a cackling madman who’d devour even his own siblings if given the chance.

@@SorowFame It seems like the opposite. The serpent is in control most of the time, then relinquishes control to Rykard when backed in a corner. Rykard makes a lot of noises that hint at him being awakened after a long period, and even seems to see the tarnished for the first time, when he says, "very well".

The main benefit is that he's immortal without the Golden Order. This means that, if he succeeded in devouring all of the gods including the death rune, he'd still be immortal while everyone else has their mortality returned.

In mount gelmir he found the serpent that devoura worlds, but It was small... And he allowed It to devour him... He then took somewhat controll and from that point he consumed champions, growing stronger and stronger.
That is more what I interpret It. In the beginning cutscene you see his head being devoured. Then It's implied the volcano manor invites tarnished and other Warriors to be devoured by him, to grow stronger.

This boss immediately became the creepiest enemy in the game when he said "Very well..." in that voice as he woke up. There was just such an assuredness in that deeply insane utterance, as of some unfathomable force of nature, who sees the world in a way you could never comprehend, waking and training its far-seeing eyes on your tiny being as it prepares to casually brush you from existence as easily as it breathes. Sure, it's not that strong, but that kind of insane, menacing confidence isn't seen very often.
If you think about it, if we hadn't the convenient spear right in front of him, we would be very screwed...

There's so much about Rykards design I just love. Like how his arms and legs stick out of gashes in the snake's body like the violent synthesis of their bodies raises questions about who's really in control of their body, is it Eiglay or Rykard, is he more serpent or man. Also how his face only takes shape after we incapacitate the snake

i LOVE how the serpent mouth has to actually open wider at the end to allow for the cross-guard to slip out. Honestly haven't been this impressed with a very minor detail in a long time.. this game has tons of them. I respect that attention to logic in these animations.
That and he has a hard time removing the sword due to all of the corpses stuck in there. Or his grip due to how slimy it is. Love fromsoft's details.

Powerscaling wise, Rykard has to be up there in strength.. I know prime Radahn is the strongest demigod with Malenia the only one to match him but has any other demigod seen Rykard in this form? This new Rykard is specifically a form he wants to use to kill the outer gods which are way more powerful than everyone else.. The developers of the game even give you a literal God killing plot device weapon on this stage to beat him lol he seems like his strength is severely underrated by the fanbase
Even if he isn't too tier strong now, his plan involves amassing strength over time. Bite by bite he's gonna eat that elephant as the saying goes
Miquella is the strongest demi god, if you know his lore you will see he is hiding it.
But Radahn in his prime comes in second place.

Miquella could not stand against the swordplay of his sister who trained in it for much of her life to help steel herself against the Scarlet Rot ravaging her body.
Nor could he stand up against the might of Radahn, a warrior who broke armies and forced the aforementioned Malenia into a losing battle that forced her to bloom for the first time.
Canonically I don’t see Miquella being the mightiest demigod, at least as he was. If they want to elevate him to that level through some transformation, I’d imagine the intervention of some other Outer God or force that would propel him to those heights.
It’s not enough to simply wave your hands around and say that he “hides his strength” when we aren’t really given any reason to think so.

Any other game developer would’ve just given Rykard an “evil” voice modifier. Fromsoft did it right though. This is exactly how I would imagine this guy sounding. The hurried breaths, the strain in his voice from being such a mess from fusing with a serpent, the fact that he doesn’t give a shit about sounding out the words completely and I absolutely loved the sword he pulls out his throat complimented by the few skeletal human remains that fall into the lava and immediately melt.
It really adds to his presence of being such a massive entity when he pulls out that giant coolest looking 2 hander ever paired with the human remains falling out. God I love this game so much. I don’t think I’ve ever been into a game this much since I was a kid and got hooked on WoW as my first MMORPG. I really hope they continue to add content, either in the form of DLC’s or otherwise.
I’d love it if they just kinda mashed together some of the stuff from Bloodborne and Sekiro in the game. What I mean by that is, I’d love if they created a “Land of Reeds” DLC or a “Back to Yharnam” DLC. I can definitely see the land of reeds one happening.

Reminder that all the "Champions" before you working for the Volcano Manor had no idea Rykard was a snek man. They all thought they were going to see a noble God before getting vored.
All those veins you see on his sword are actually previous Champions, still conscious and very much in pain, regretting every decision they have ever made that led them to this.

I think the creepy thing about Rykard is that he actually doesn't across as a bad guy. His wife seems to adore him, we have no evidence that their marriage was anything but loving, his adoptive daughter is creepy but sweet and he clearly seemed to care about. The actual manor is rather homey considering the situation.
He would be an OK guy if he wasn't an insane snake monster.
@@rosesweetcharlotte By all accounts, he was indeed a somewhat decent person (though being an inquisitor and Gideon's description does hint that he was never the nicest guy), and the whole point of his claim to Blasphemy was "Ok, yeah, if following the Gods means turning on your family and going to war with each other just to see who's stronger, then I'll gladly be a blasphemer."
And he even had a whole army of dedicated followers. But when he fed himself to the serpent he just became a completely irredeemable monster and everyone except a select few turned on him, only to be devoured, that's why you can find the Serpent Slayer in his bossroom, because his followers were killed trying to use it against him.
Also, Tanith was working as a dancer in a foreign country when he met her, and then he married her. Given that he's royalty, and a literal demi-god, him marrying a foreign commoner does imply that he was indeed in love with her, and she gladly returns his affections (though given his current state that's not exactly a good thing)

Rykard says he wants to liberate people but in reality he wants to be the one dominating and be god, that is why he wants to kill and consume god/gods.
Ranni isn't trying to become god, she is trying to remove the influence of the Greater Will on the Lands Between and says its done to protect mortals. Possibly though it is to make way for another possible god (The Dark Moon), either way Ranni isn't trying to elevate herself to godhood.
Rykard and Ranni are both working towards ousting the Greater Will but their motivations and end goals are radically different. I don't think Ranni would at all approve of Rykard and his ways and Rykard would rather consume Ranni than work with her.

I’d say Rykard is closer to the Frenzy Flame’s goal. The lord of the Frenzy Flame essentially wants to exterminate all like while Rykard wants the serpent to consume everything. Ranni wanted to restore the elden ring but send it far away into the stars so no one could abuse it again. She also wanted the Dark Moon to rule over everything.
The whole villain has a very “old school humanity lost” feel, like you would see in movies from the 80s or earlier, like Dr. Oz, MODOK, or for lack of a better example, Mr. Electric.

that's the first thing that came to my mind when I saw hiw sword and his design. he definitely is the most berserk boss in the game.
His way of speaking is even more ridiculous when you remember that he's Rennala's son and Ranni's brother... The apple really couldn't have fallen further from the tree.
Not just Rennala and Ranni, but he is also Radagon's son, and Radahn's brother. Also Miquella and Malenia's half brother too. And by extension, Mohg, Morgott, and Messmer's cousin.
I just noticed that he has the same hands as those creatures that lurks at the manor. I wonder what lore implications it has, maybe they keep on lurking and eating people if he cuts them ?

That last shot with the Tarnished standing before him looks so cool. I often get summoned for Rykard and when the host doesn't skip the cutscene it makes me feel like a side character assisting the protagonist

Idk how to describe it but this boss gives me theme park ride vibes. Like one of those interactive rides where they strap you in and you ride past big screens and hot air blows at you to help build the immersion. When rykard enters the second phase and the ceiling area starts turning red and you hear that crazy ambient sound that plays, and then he leans in close to look at you randomly throughout the fight, the skulls raining down from the sky on you an as magma spreads across the ground. It's not a hard fight by any means, but it is absolutely one of fromsofts most atmospheric and on point fights. Blew me away the first time.
10/10 cerntent would devouwer the very gerds tergether (as fermily erf course)
This voice acting for Rykard is so unique and sinister at the same time lol very fitting for the serpent king TOGETHHHAAAA
