Their engineers were par to none in the US. They made the original prime with a very small team, and they focused on building the game engine to be super rock solid. Stable 60fps on the GC and Wii given the amount of action, objects and effects they pulled was almost wizardry
The old (pre-2008) Retro Studios crew mainly came from another legacy studio (either Acclaim or Iguana Entertainment) in the 1990's... They were some of the guys who created the cult classic "Turok" games for the Nintendo 64.

And they released it at $40 to boot. I'm guessing this was like the Wind Waker HD story. Remaster the existing game to HD to make it easier to create and develop the next gen game. This was probably done to make development of Metroid Prime 4 more efficient.
The charge beam lighting effect was removed on the Wii version, apparently because the team thought it looked bad when players would wave the gun around. Actually a lot of gun effects were removed.
That’s a shame, some of the environments in Metroid Prime are so dark that I’d have to charge the arm cannon and use it as a flashlight. I am scratching my head why they don’t include that and save states as options for players to toggle. Metroid Prime feels really dated forcing players to trek to rooms to manually save- it’s such a chore. Even the widely-panned GTA Definitive Editions managed to introduce auto saves!
@@SmurffNationnWell, the remaster is significantly less dark for one. There wouldn’t be a need for that, since by the time really dark areas are introduced, you have the thermal visor. As for save states, its a conscious choice by the game designers dating back to at least super Metroid. It amps up the tension as you traverse areas, as deaths are more punishing, forcing you to engage more with the game. Once you get used to traversing it becomes less of an issue, especially with the better controls.

I can't believe the Switch is running this. At times it flat out looks like a current-gen game, all while running at a locked 60fps and 900p with anti-aliasing. This is hands down the best looking and most technically accomplished Nintendo game thus far, I expected to see this type of stuff on the Switch 2, not the current one.
Games used to have optimised code. Metroid Prime is an old game. Even if you buff up the assets to HD the overhead of the game code is so little that it doesn't take that much performance. Modern devs don't know how to optimise, it's common practice nowadays to brute force problems with better hardware or lower quality rather than squeeze every bit of performance out of the system via optimisation.
Really captured the artstyle of the original. That vibrant 6th gen palette with all of its blues and yellows is perfectly intact, and it keeps the stylized semi-realistic gamecube era look to the new lighting and shading instead of using ill-considered photorealistic lighting methods for the sake of being modern at the expense of faithfulness. And to top it off it runs better for it too. It's like the remaster really was made with 2002 design philosophies in mind.
the thing with remasters and ports is it's easier to not screw it up. they literally had to just leaves things as they are as much as possible. the more work they do, the more things change, the more the game becomes less faithful. and the fact this is a port means they were not able (or didn't bother to) recreate the game, which is ok, it runs well. but it means we can't really praise them for being faithful when the result is just a port, and not much could be changed anyway
I’m playing it right now. It’s my first time with a Metroid game. Thanks for intro about the game because I was wondering why it’s light on story in the first few hours. Ok, back to exploring 👾

Game is missing only two things as of right now in my opinion: button remapping and a brightness slider. There are parts of the game that have been too dark for my screen unless I'm playing in the dark. If only you could swap ZL and L this game would actually be totally functional on a GameCube controller in the dual stick controls, too! Minor gripes, though. Can't complain too much. For the most part this remaster is insanely good, going way beyond a standard remaster!
I think the biggest issues are the Gamecube controller controls have X and Y swapped so anyone with musle memory of original controls get pretty messed up. Another issue with a forced 3 round burst on the power beam that you have to wait for before you can begin charging.
@@alrightalright4585 I pre-ordered mine at Best Buy, right now there most likely out of reservations there, Amazon, and Target. From what I know GameStop might still have pre-orders open.
Seeing Samus’s reflection when shooting a charged shot near her was so rewarding to see her face on GameCube and an incredible detail one could easily miss.
Not to mention the visor fogging up (even if it was super symmetrical), rain drops on the visor, idle hand animations, everything having a temperature, and seeing her hand change position inside the arm cannon with the X-Ray Visor.
I feel that auto-saves and checkpoints remove the weight and impact of death. If you know that death will set you back a lot, it creates more tension, which is exactly what Metroid needs. The fear of the EMMIs in Dread was completely lost on me because I knew death didn’t matter. I would respawn almost exactly where I died. That’s what made the SA-X in Fusion so scary. Most of the time, you had to travel a long way to return to the encounter, dreading it all the way. It made the sound of footsteps the thing that made my heart rate spike the most. Auto-saving has no place in a Metroid game
Also, the game is SO MUCH easier in dual-stick mode that, if there were checkpoints, there'd be almost no challenge at all. I'm actually a little surprised they didn't rebalance it, since this was a criticism of the Wii version too.
Yes it has. It could always be an optional feature, of course, so "true gamers" like yourself can win a trophy to show how awesome you are. Your experience isn't everyone else's. So please stop being a gatekeeping asshole.
This reminds me of some people complaining abour Dread when it came out, and saying stuff like the maps are a bit confusing, but it felt exactly like a metroid game should, and surpassed most of the ones before it.
Thank you! This! If they want to add it, at least make it a toggleable option in the menu but still design the difficulty of the game around manual saves as to not compromise the experience for people who want challenges.
Metroid Prime Remastered looks like the original I remember playing so long ago. It's like they took what I saw through my rose tinted glasses and made it a reality.
The same thing happened to me and the new ninja turtles side-scroller. I remember the old game looking that good but when I looked it up it was so outdated! 😂
Using the energy buildup as a light is the only thing you've mentioned here that I would like to see addressed. I kinda like the doors now: they look more "LED lit." But that's a matter of preference, not performance, I guess. Great review!
Just a little hot tip for those interested in the gyro control implementation as it was kind of confusing for me at first. You can activate gyro controls in the dual stick control scheme to play the game more in line with an FPS such as Splatoon. The hybrid format is something entirely different and kind of meshes the GameCube style while giving you wii pointer aiming when you hold the trigger. It's very unique and could be fun, but wasn't what I was looking for. So If you're looking for more genuine "wide turns with stick fine adjustments with gyro" look through the options in the dual stick controls.
The best control options is two sticks with gyro aim turned on. This creates controls similar to Splatoon and make fine tuning the aim much easier, sometimes I don't even lock on due to how much better it is to aim
I think Prime 2 could look so gorgeous. And also could include small QOL things, in terms of ammo and health when in the dark world. It’s the Prime game I always come back to.
It would be a lose lose if they didn't. Fans get offended and dissapointed. Developers waste an opportunity for money as well, because I know that would sell like hot hot bread
Same! Would be weird it Switch only will get Metroid Prime 1 and 4. Where's 2 and 3? I don't expect Metroid Prime 4 to get released now in 2023. Probably in 2024 if they don't release 2 and 3 as remasters before. There's different release strategies to release all 4 games (if they do): Trilogy, 4 (no longer possible) 1, 2, 3, 4 (one game per year) 1, 2 and 3 as combo pack, 4 1, 2, 3 and Trilogy, 4 1, 2, 3, 4 and Trilogy 1, Trilogy, 4 1, 4, 2, 3 1, 4, 2, 3 and Trilogy 1, 4, Trilogy And some other strategies. I have no idea how Nintendo will do it. If they do it. Since this is a business with profit ambitions we have to try to see what will be the best for Nintendo and Switch - and for the Metroid fans. It would be so sad and boring if they will skip game 2 and 3. I hope they will release game 2 and 3 as seperate releases. And then Metroid Prime 4. That will give the dev team as much time as possible to make the 4th game as good as possible. Maybe there's a new and more powerful Switch when MP4 is ready. I'm so excited!

I may be wrong but I think the original game on Gamecube was probably one of the first game with proper ragdoll physics. When you kill space pirates, they tend to fall from a bridge to another bridge below. Nice feat and very cool looking game for the time. I also always thought the artists exploited well the low poly aesthetics making the game still looking nice even today. I'm very tempted by this remaster.

Other than the switch to 16:9 AR, Metroid Prime Trilogy on Wii was a graphical downgrade from the GameCube original. Several graphical effects were sacrificed in part due to the new camera system implemented to accommodate the motion control scheme. It was a solid port overall, but not the definitive way to play MP. Of course, the Switch remake now supplants both as the ultimate MP experience.

This remaster absolutely deserves the praise and super high reviews it's been getting. Great video MVG! I also love seeing/hearing new people trying it for the first time coming from Dread and loving it.
As someone who only had a GBA when Metroid prime came out, but fell in love with the series with Zero mission and fusion, I can't wait to get my hands on this game and see just what I missed all those years ago. The level of polish you describe makes me think that's why only the first game in the prime series was released, but with the lower price tag and the fact that it uses the source code from the trilogy bundle on the Wii, I'm very hopeful we may see the later games get a similar treatment in the lead up to the reveal and launch of Metroid Prime 4. And with game boy and GBA games now on switch online, there's a chance we could see every Metroid game playable on a single console! Really goes to show how much optimization can push a relatively weak console to such impressive heights.
I'd love a high res remake of Zero Mission, Fusion, and Samus Returns (god, Nintendo seriously dropped by the ball by releasing Samus Returns on the almost-dead 3DS when the Switch was RIGHT THERE 😖).
@Prizm Same here. Don't know why but the Switch back than was getting hot and Samus Returns should have been a perfect title for Switch. I still have my 3DS so if I want to play it again, I would.
We know Metroid Fusion is coming to Gameboy Advance for NSO+Expansion Pack and I'm definitely sure we will see Metroid Zero Mission come some time as well.
To this day, this is one of my all-time favourite video games, I played it countless times and love it to death. Seeing that there is a well made remaster released is literally a dream come true. I‘m trying to convince a good friend of mine for years to play this game, but he couldn‘t manage the controls and lost interest. Now there‘s no excuse for him…

What a fantastic remaster. It hits like a breeze of fresh air after all the subpar remasters we've seen all across the industry over the last few years.
Just finishd my first run. 94%. I was in heaven. And I agree 100% with everything you say around 3:30 onwards. THIS is a remaster. A great example how orignal world creation and design can look like. And that it is not so much about grafik quality, if a game just looks nice, and more about outstanding designs. In my opinion Metroid Prime on the GC still is a treat for the eye, just because of this great world and lively animations. And they made a worthy remaster for this iconic game. I'm still so greatfull for this... And now, I'm looking forward to my second run on hard mode, with motioncontrol 🤩
10:00 one of the things that give some horror, survival, souls-like and metroidvania games their sense of dread, is save scarcity, and how it instills legit fear in the player due to the consequence of death. So it sounds more like an intentional design to me and I'm glad they kept it.
Enjoy! It's such an amazing game and this is the definitive edition. I know a few people that this is their first or second after dread and they are loving it!
@@romulus_ I'd add Zero Mission as I love that remake. Fusion is good as well but it's my least favorite but for some it's their fav as it's linear and more horror.
I'm convinced that this game was ported using black magic on the Switch. I've gotten so used to compromised sub 30fps experiences on the aging console, that seeing 'Metroid Prime Remastered' on it not only looks fantastic graphically, but also runs at a dreamy super stable 60fps. OG Retro Studios are definitely effin wizards when it comes to optimization. Also at 7:28 the remastered version's charge beam doesn't light up the environment like it did on the Gamecube original sure. But on the bright side though, it does light up Samus's helmet UI in real-time. So I think it's safe to say that is a fair trade-off to an otherwise nice subtle technical feature. I'm joking of course.
The only thing I wish they added was checkpoints after you die, instead of sending you all the way back to the previous save station and having you to redo the last chunk of the game. I just played through the Phazon Mines again after years and forgot how brutal they are, if you die before getting the power bomb then good luck replaying the last 30-45min again. Its the type of thing that put off many gamers from the Metroid series in the past and hindered its mass appeal. Even Metroid Dread got checkpoints everywhere and nobody complained.
@@Krushak8888 Its not about challenge, its about convenience. Even Metroid Prime 3 on the Wii had checkpoints, so I'm not sure why they reverted back to not having them again.
For an old school gamer like me, I don't mind redoing brutal sections, because that's how gaming used to be. You didn't get your hand held the entire time, you had to overcome, and when you did, the feeling of achievement is that much more gratifying. I don't want noobies to forget what old school gaming was like. If you're going to update games to today though, do everything like Skyrim, where you can literally save anytime anywhere. Otherwise, endure the challenges, legends 🗡🛡👾😈
Im loving it haven't played it in 20 years and Jesus i forgot how amazing the music is its like they combined ambience with catchy tunes i didn't think that was possible but phendrana drifts and magmor caverns are superb
Metroid is one of those series that reached its peak in Gamecube and seem to keep that success. Love the series and hoping M4 is great and not Nintendo Free pass
Thank you for the technical review of the remaster. I was wondering whether it was a re-port or running on emulation. The game looks fantastic. Can't wait to get it in physical form.
One small thing I always appreciated about the game was the different hand positions in the weapon selector to the right, implying Samus switches weapons by using different gestures
The one big thing I'm gonna harp on until the cows come home is a very important update to increase how accessible this game is to people: It has 3 colorblind modes in the menus. Red, Green, and Blue for those who have difficulty discerning those particular colors. This is something Nintendo rarely seems to care to implement so the fact it was done here, ALLOWED to be implemented is huge. I also appreciate the small things you can fine tune in the control schemes, and that from what I know the Gamecube USB adapters allow Gamecube controllers to be used with this remaster!
The doors were also changed to look more opaque rather than the transparent look the original had (one of the devs complained about this). Although it was likely an artistic choice to match it with the 2D Metroid games and for better visibility from a distance
This was everything I wanted to hear, this game was a huge one for me, just blew me away the first time and one of my favorite video game experiences of all time.
I remember using the light from wave beam to light up the dark areas in Phendrana instead of using the thermal visor because the thermal visor hurt my eyes, so the lack of light from the beams bothered me just a bit right off the bat xD
7:40 Yeah, it seems like this version is a bit inconsistent about when your weapons cast light and when they don't. But I also can't tell whether that's accidental or deliberate. I'd guess deliberate, tho, since lighting effects are easy to sacrifice to maintain FPS. But it is mildly annoying, especially when I shoot my gun into a dark area expecting light, but only the impact causes a tiny flare. But that is a very minor nitpick with what is otherwise a superb remastering of a superb game.

I can't believe how good this turned out. It got me thinking about the Cube library and I remember back in the day towards the end of its lifecycle how loaded the library was. If Nintendo starts digging for Cube content dang it'll be a crazy couple of years.

At the time it was still reviewed critically as a masterpiece. It became the highest selling Metroid game and stayed that way until Dread came out. There was definitely skepticism and concerns before launch, but I'd say a lot of it died when people actually played the game themselves.

I’m pretty sure that’s backwards about the heat effect on your weapon coming from the Wii version and not being implemented in the original GameCube version. I recall that they had to ditch it in Trilogy in order to make a consistent HUD using Prime 3 Corruption’s code base. There might have been something similar with the specks of water that land on your visor when you look up on the surface of Talon IV, but I’m not sure about that one. I recall the heat thing because it really bugged me that the Wii version was missing an effect from the GameCube version.
Some effects, like the heat distortion, were linked to the position of Samus's cannon on screen, and were removed for the Wii version. But the heat glow effect shown here is more like the subtle bloom lighting which was added to 1 and 2 in the Trilogy.
It's crazy to me that this is easily one of the most graphically impressive games on the Switch and it's a Gamecube remaster... that's not to criticise the visuals of Switch games... that's to praise this remaster for being one of the most high effort and respectful remasters ever made. They've completely knocked it out of the park here and they completely deserve all the praise they're getting. And when you consider the kinds of remasters we're getting from... say... companies like Rockstar? Pfffthaha.
And at $40 it’s a hell of a steal! I hope Nintendo realizes that people want Metroid more and more and they are picking up on it with this love shown lately.
I must say... the suit Samus is wearing must have one of the most optimized compression systems ever invented. It fits an entire human into a ball and has lossless recreation of the original. 😁
I literally just started replaying prime 1 the day before this dropped, and sadly got hit with the “disc could not read” screen about an hour in. Perfect timing, Nintendo! (And the physical copy drops a day after my birthday!!!!)
When the doors are the biggest annoyance, you know you did something right. This is a gorgeous remaster. Almost 100% perfect. My only issue is the thermal visor. They changed how it looks a little, and it actually messes with my motion sickness while it’s on now.
I think the increase in lighting is probably the reason why the thermal visor is so different, such effects in the original version were duller, but all the lighting pops out on the remaster, meaning that the colors can be more of an eye strain than previously especially when the camera is moved, but I don't know if this could be avoided at all.
Can you still fast fire missiles in this version? In the GCN version, if you pressed the A button immediately after pressing Y to fire a missile, Samus’s arm cannon would close without delay so you could rapid fire missile shots. Is that still possible in the remaster?
AS always a fantastic rundown. I am so happy this masterpiece gets the love that it deserves and hopefully they will patch the arm-canon lighting effect.

Another regression i noticed is the scan visor. In the original, there's a very cool looking magnifying effect that's missing from both the Wii version and this remaster.
I would have been pretty surprised if it was using any emulation. To have this level of graphical improvement and have it still being emulated would be incredibly impressive for the switch.
Playing it, I’m blown away by how amazing the game itself has aged. It could honestly have been a new game. That’s how good the game is underneath; and how amazing the remaster is! I never once think that I’m playing a 20 year old game.
The lighting system is in another level, it's something I'd see on a more complex game like God of War or even some games with RayTracing enabled, insanely impressive coming from an almost 6 year old console with even older hardware. I'd love to see them tackle the rest of the trilogy with this level of fidelity, imagine how moody and scary Prime 2 would look with this lighting system!

@@Grapefruit5000 while we have Sony and Microsoft having consoles in the end if it wasn’t for Nintendo we wouldn’t have games ever again Nintendo will always be considered the best

The charge beam lighting effect was removed on the Wii version, apparently because the team thought it looked bad when players would wave the gun around. Actually a lot of gun effects were removed.
The funny thing is that retro didnt remove the arm cannon effects for prime2
It was a 2D overlay effect, so when you had free movement with the wii pointer the effect was broken and looked really bad.
Wrong, Prime 2 and 3 had those exact effects.
Prime always had some of the best art direction in any game, ever. So I’m not surprised it looks as good as it does with some high texture packages.
No doubt MP was an incredible masterpiece when it came out. It's a game that will forever hold up just like it's predecessor Super Metroid.

It's not just the graphics that have gotten a huge uprade, but the audio has as well. I have a 5.1 surround system in my living room and I was literally blown away when I suddenly heard enemies chittering closer from behind me!

The Switch is more powerful than a PS3, the internet forgets that it is a powerful handheld.

Blimey, calm down.
@@Robert-tl2vg??
the thing with remasters and ports is it's easier to not screw it up. they literally had to just leaves things as they are as much as possible.
the more work they do, the more things change, the more the game becomes less faithful.
and the fact this is a port means they were not able (or didn't bother to) recreate the game, which is ok, it runs well.

Auto-saving has no place in a Metroid game
very good points

Nothing is made better with motion controls. Nothing.
@@RageUnchainedsplatoon is so, so, so much better with motion aim turned on

There's different release strategies to release all 4 games (if they do):
Trilogy, 4 (no longer possible)
1, 2, 3, 4 (one game per year)
1, 2 and 3 as combo pack, 4
1, 2, 3 and Trilogy, 4
1, 2, 3, 4 and Trilogy
1, Trilogy, 4
1, 4, 2, 3
1, 4, 2, 3 and Trilogy
1, 4, Trilogy
And some other strategies.

And that it is not so much about grafik quality, if a game just looks nice, and more about outstanding designs. 10:00 one of the things that give some horror, survival, souls-like and metroidvania games their sense of dread, is save scarcity, and how it instills legit fear in the player due to the consequence of death.
So it sounds more like an intentional design to me and I'm glad they kept it.
I never played Metroid but this convinced me to buy the remaster.

And so if its still a remaster... Wouldn't that make it so hard for us to get a metroid prime 2 or 3 remaster in the near future?
The only thing I wish they added was checkpoints after you die, instead of sending you all the way back to the previous save station and having you to redo the last chunk of the game. I just played through the Phazon Mines again after years and forgot how brutal they are, if you die before getting the power bomb then good luck replaying the last 30-45min again. Its the type of thing that put off many gamers from the Metroid series in the past and hindered its mass appeal. Even Metroid Dread got checkpoints everywhere and nobody complained.
Dread also was way harder than it needed it to be.

Thank you for the technical review of the remaster. I was wondering whether it was a re-port or running on emulation. The game looks fantastic. Can't wait to get it in physical form.
They turned everything up to 11 in what was already a masterpiece of a game! What a nice surprise, can't believe they dropped this out of nowhere.
One other minor graphics bug: There's a mirror that no longer reflects Samus. Still a Top 3 remaster.
The doors were also changed to look more opaque rather than the transparent look the original had (one of the devs complained about this). Although it was likely an artistic choice to match it with the 2D Metroid games and for better visibility from a distance

By the way: Metroid Prime Remastered Physical edition is No. 1 in sales on Amazon US, as well as being sold out in Amazon Mexico and Amazon Spain.
@@Dracobyte Metroid is back *BABYYYYYYYYYY*
The amount of detail they put on the environments is staggering, this is much closer to a remake than a remaster imo.
It may blur the lines a little but compared to something like Resident evil 2, a clear remake, I think it's still categorized better as a remaster since the map layout is exactly the same
@@wrosebrock Yea but then we have Demon's Souls and Shadow of the Colossus remakes which are 1to1 re-creations...
@@DoomsdayMayBeOkay good point, now it's more of a blurred line for me
It's literally a complete visual remake, just with game code and general content being the same.
@@epoch151 not really
I can't believe how good this turned out. It got me thinking about the Cube library and I remember back in the day towards the end of its lifecycle how loaded the library was. If Nintendo starts digging for Cube content dang it'll be a crazy couple of years.
F-Zero GX: Remastered when? 💙
7:30 Damn! That was one of the tricks I used back in the day to light up the dim corridors. So charging the weapons doesn't light up the rooms anymore. 😢
Remember when these games used to get hate for not being like usual metroid games? Now people are calling them Masterpiece. Times change.
Hmm there might have been some talk like that, but this was pretty much seen as a bit of a masterpiece at the time iirc
There was very few people saying that and they were just Super Metroid die hards.
At the time it was still reviewed critically as a masterpiece. It became the highest selling Metroid game and stayed that way until Dread came out.
There was definitely skepticism and concerns before launch, but I'd say a lot of it died when people actually played the game themselves.
Oh man, this looks good. I've got a lot of nostalgia for Metroid Prime. It was one of those games I spent the entire summer playing as a kid.

I love that the Space Pirates tried to replicate the tech and had some hilarious deaths because of it 😂🤣
I literally just started replaying prime 1 the day before this dropped, and sadly got hit with the “disc could not read” screen about an hour in.
I really like the multiple control option. Not a lot of games bring that over so I enjoyed that they gave you options.

MVG you are the GOAT of TH-cam right now! Keep it up mate! ✅🍻
Tallon 4, not 5.
I want to replay this in VR, too bad that will never happen..
You can with Dolphin VR !
It's pretty great
There's an unofficial dolphin VR branch you can try out.
Metroid Prime is and always has been an incredible experience. Definitely one of my top 5 games ever. Looking forward to getting my hands on a physical copy of the remaster. Excellent review as always! Glad to know I can purchase with confidence.
As i was replaying this game i slowly realized this is probably the best looking game of its generation, Halo 2 which came out after metroid prime looked arguably worst than metroid prime which released before it
Talon IV, not V 😜
