30 years of Intel in Ireland

Intel first decided to locate in Ireland in 1989 and shortly afterwards began developing land at Collinstown Industrial Park in Leixlip, Co. Kildare. We soon began production of boards and systems in a facility which became Intel's European Site for Systems Manufacturing (ESSM). Construction of Intel’s first every semiconductor wafer fabrication facility in Europe, Fab 10, also began at this time and by the mid 1990’s Ireland had become a key production location for Intel. Throughout the 1990’s and 2000’s investment in the Leixlip campus continued with additional large scale fabrication facilities being added and in 2014 Intel announced details of a $5 billion campus upgrade investment, the largest private investment in the history of the Irish State, which enabled the facility in Leixlip to manufacture latest generation Intel process technology.
The total invested by Intel in Ireland since 1989 now stands at $15 billion. The Irish fab operations have consistently played a central role within Intel’s global manufacturing network and we have leveraged our manufacturing capability and world class infrastructure to develop new competencies in areas such as computer vision, artificial intelligence and network transformation.
The work that we undertake at the Leixlip campus is world class and unique in terms of its scale and complexity and has had a very significant impact on both the local and national economy in many ways. For example, Intel Ireland contributes €921 million each year to the Irish economy and supports 7,550 full time equivalent jobs in the economy which are in addition to the 4,500 people working for Intel. We support 756 Irish suppliers with who we spend €187 million every year.
In November 2019 we will proudly celebrate 30 years of Intel operations in Ireland. This video was specially created to coincide with this important milestone and it is a celebration of all that has been made possible by our employees over the past 30 years.
