BIOGRAPHY OF EVA CASSIDY
Eva Marie Cassidy (February 2, 1963 - November 2, 1996) was an American singer and guitarist known for her interpretations of jazz, folk, and blues music, sung with a powerful, emotive soprano voice. In 1992, she released her first album, The Other Side, a set of duets with go-go musician Chuck Brown, followed by the 1996 live solo album titled Live at Blues Alley. Although she had been honored by the Washington Area Music Association, she was virtually unknown outside her native Washington, D.C., at the time of her death from melanoma at the age of 33 in 1996.
Two years later, Cassidy's music was brought to the attention of British audiences, when her versions of "Fields of Gold" and "Over the Rainbow" were played by Mike Harding and Terry Wogan on BBC Radio 2. Following the overwhelming response, a camcorder recording of "Over the Rainbow", taken at Blues Alley in Washington by her friend Bryan McCulley, was shown on BBC Two's Top of the Pops 2. Shortly afterwards, the compilation album Songbird climbed to the top of the UK Albums Chart, almost three years after its initial release. The chart success in the United Kingdom and Ireland led to increased recognition worldwide. Her posthumously released recordings, including three number-one albums and one number-one single in the UK, have sold more than ten million copies.[1] Her music has also charted within the top 10 in Australia, Germany, Norway, Sweden and Switzerland.[2]
In total, nine posthumous albums have been released. The most recent, I Can Only Be Me, a collaboration with the London Symphony Orchestra, was released in 2023 and charted at number 9 on the UK album chart.
Early life
Born on February 2, 1963, at the Washington Hospital Center in Washington, D.C.,[3] Cassidy grew up in Oxon Hill, Maryland, and later Bowie, Maryland. She was the third of four children. Her father, Hugh Cassidy, is a teacher, sculptor, musician, former army medic, and world champion powerlifter of Irish and Scottish descent, while her mother, Barbara (née Kratzer), is a German horticulturist from Bad Kreuznach.[2][4][5] From an early age, Cassidy displayed interest in art and music. When she was nine, her father began teaching her to play the guitar, and she began to play and sing at family gatherings.[4]
At age 11, Cassidy began singing and playing guitar in a Washington-area band called Easy Street.[6] This band performed in a variety of styles at weddings, corporate parties, and pubs. Due to her shyness, she struggled with performing in front of strangers.[7] While a student at Bowie High School, she sang with a local band called Stonehenge.[4] During the summer of 1983, Cassidy sang and played guitar six days a week at the theme park Wild World.[4] Her younger brother Dan, a fiddler, was also a member of this working band. She enrolled in art classes at Prince George's Community College but dropped out after finding them unhelpful.[8]
Throughout the 1980s, Cassidy worked with several other bands, including the techno-pop band Characters Without Names. During this period, she also worked as a propagator at a plant nursery and as a furniture painter. In her free time, she explored other artistic expressions including painting, sculpting, and jewelry design.[8]
Music career
In 1986, Cassidy was asked by Stonehenge guitarist and high school friend, David Lourim, to lend her voice to his music project, Method Actor.[9] This brought her to Black Pond Studios, where she met recording engineer and bassist Chris Biondo. Biondo helped her find work as a session singer and later introduced her to Al Dale, who would become her manager. She sang back-ups for various acts, from go-go rhythm and blues band Experience Unlimited to rapper E-40.[10] Biondo and Cassidy, who were in a romantic relationship for a time, formed the five-piece "Eva Cassidy Band" with Lenny Williams, Keith Grimes, and Raice McLeod in 1990. They began to perform frequently in the Washington area.[4]

I think she was singing about heaven and death. I think she sensed something wrong with her health, although the diagnosis of terminal cancer wouldn't be given for another few months off. I cry every time I hear Eva sing this.

My dear, like so many of us around the world we have never heard something as beautiful as this. I, too, Like Andy Schnell, am a devoted Angelina Jordan 'angel' and she means everything to me but there is no denying this rendition of 'Somewhere Over The Rainbow' by Eva is on a level somewhere all by itself. Sadly, and you know by now, she passed away within a year after this recording took place at 33 years old. She will never be forgotten. Never.
Stay close to Angelina because the vibes we get from her are very similar to those we just received listening to Eva. When artists like these two put their heart and soul into their music we feel it in our hearts. Eva will always be a memory but Angelina is with us and we want so much to tell her we love her very much and that we are part of a global family she is creating, people who understand to make the world a better place to live for everyone, particularly the unfortunate, we must begin to love one another. We draw strength from Angelina's love in our hearts and we have become kinder, more caring and loving than ever before in our lives.

Sadly it breaks my heart every time , I hear someone say she passed only a year after recording this groundbreaking breathtaking rendition. She is with us ALWAYS. Her legacy lives on in our hearts.
This was recorded on the second night of two performances by Eva and the band, they hired a recording engineer to do a live album so they could get something on record and only had funds to record the two nights.
The first night was unusable because of a technical glitch, so all of the album had to come from the single take...............and she nailed it.

EC recorded this in Washington DC January 2nd, 1996. She was Dignosed with inoperable Melanoma cancer mid year 1996, and died in November 1996. May she always be able to shine in her legacy of great music. BTW, her father taught her the guitar she obviously loves to play, she taught herself to sing, and she arrainged almost all the music we only hear recotdings of.
AWWWWW her music shines through our hearts. She left a great legacy for our world.
Since becoming a TH-camr watching music videos, I have found my two favorite singer story tellers who hug my soul with the emotion they evoke. Eva Cassidy and Angelina Jordan. Eva was taken from us far too early in her life and may she rest in peace. Angelina at age 17 and in her 11th year as a recording artist, has a future as bright as the brightest star. May her career bring her as much love and happiness as her heart desires, knowing Angelina returns that love 1000 times over.

That was such a beautiful rendition of this song. So sad that she is no longer with us. She died at only 33 years of age. I also love the version by Israel Kamakawiwoʻole. Sadly he also died young at 38 years of age. At least we have their music left as a legacy.

She had one of the most beautiful voices of my lifetime. She was sick this night, and passed from cancer very shortly after this performance, one of the biggest losses the music industry has ever had in my opinion. She lived here in Washington, D.C., which is where this video was filmed. But sadly, we lost her getting on 30 years ago now. She was diagnosed with cancer a few months after this video was filmed, and passed away later that same year.

The guitar. So beautiful. And yet ..... she didn't think she was good enough to play It on stage. Her band insisted.
I believe God gave this young lady a special gift of singing playing the guitar and transporting us to a place similar to the movie place in the Wizzard Of Oz, but, far more realistic. A picture of actually flying Over The Rainbow to be Raptured to be with the Lord in the Sky at his Triumphant Second Coming. Only God who exists outside of time and space as we understand it, could take something written in 1939 for the movie The Wizzard Of Oz and sung by Judy Garland who starred in the movie, to have Eva Cassidy who was dying of cancer in 1996 re-write the song without changing a word of the lyrics, to be have her talent explode on TH-cam in 2023 and 2024 at a time that the World in beginning to witness Biblical End Times, and through the Holy Spirit have Eva Paint a Portrait of the coming Rapture of the Lord's Church. In Noah's Day God all but destroyed mankind with a World Flood because of the Evil that had spread on Earth. At the end of Noah's voyage on the Ark, God put the Sign in the Sky of the Rainbow, to give us the Promise that He would not destroy mankind again. The Revelation in Eva's interpretation of the song gives us a picture of the Lord's Return to Gather His Church to be present with Him in the Sky, SOMEWHERE OVER THAT VERY RAINBOW , to be with Him ETERNALLY. It's now been over a month since I first saw a reaction video of this live performance and it still brings me to tears of absolute joy. It literally split my soul in half and mended it back together at the same time. AMEN AND AMEN
