She was diagnosed with cancer about six months after this performance. And about five months after that she was gone. The world lost a great talent. May she rest in peace. We are blessed that her music lives on.

I've heard that after this song was performed you could have heard a pin drop in that club. EVERYONE was stunned into the same feeling we have now. Once everyone came out of their coma the applause was long. No one can keep the tears from jumping out of their eyes with this ... not even big, husky men who were taught to "not cry".

She was playing this live in a bar. Bringin' church to your soul. Can you imagine how a bar can be that quiet?

I know in my heart, that if Judy Garland ever heard Eva's cover version of her song, she too would have been absolutely blown away. God rest Eva's dear sweet soul. What an incredible legacy she left us all. 💔💔

This song was made famous by Judy Garland in the 1939 movie "The Wizard Of Oz". Eva Cassidy did such a beautiful rendition of this song. So sad that she is no longer with us. She died at only 33 years of age. I also love the version by Israel Kamakawiwoʻole. Sadly he also died young at 38 years of age. At least we have their music left as a legacy.

Don't forget that Judy Garland died at 47 so... don't ever sing this song. ;-)

Eva grew up in suburban Washington DC. She was very shy and uncomfortable on stage, but she was very sure of
herself in terms of what she wanted to sing. She never got a record deal because the major companies wanted to pigeonhole her and have her sing a certain way. She refused to fall into the trap. She sang backup locally and finally met Chuck Brown, the "father of DC GO-GO". Though an unlikely duo, he brought her out of her shell as well as convincing her to pick up the guitar. This song was chosen as the Best Song of the Twentieth Century, but some poll and Eva's version is arguably, the best version, ever, of this song. For almost 60 years, this song sat virtually unchanged and covered by hundreds of artists. It was not until Israel and Eva came along, that people were able to hear the song in an entirely new approach. Eva's version has been played at more weddings, funerals and special occasion than any other song. Many people will relate how, when hearing this on the radio, they had to stop driving, so overcome with emotion. You played a recording made at Blues Alley in DC. Because of recording problems, this album was made in one take! She died before it came out. It is being re-released after 25 years. She died virtually unknown outside of DC. In 1999, after an American friend passed along the album "Songbird" to Paul Walters of BBC Radio2 in 1999, Walters was told to put it on the air without listening to it first. The rest is, as they say, history. Her family maintains a website,
evacassidy.org, where they fiercely protect her legacy. Check it out. One of my greatest regrets is, having lived just a few miles from where she lived and performed, I never had the opportunity to see her live. I have described her as a "unicorn".....a mythical creature never to be seen again. Arguably, Eva Cassidy was the greatest interpreter of songs in musical history.

I'm no expert, but from listening to reactions from vocal coaches to the gentle power and control a singer has is usually even more impressive than when they are belting from the chest. Eva is equally impressive at both ends of the spectrum.

Eva passed approximately 9 months after recording this session in the "Blues Alley" club in Washington (her favourite venue) 💖 R.I.P.

One of my two favorite female artists! Her voice is sent By an Angel but unfortunately her life was cut short well before her time at the age of only 33 from cancer. This is considered to be one of the most beautiful performances of this song ever recorded. Eva can tear your heart out with emotion just with her vocals, not to mention she was a master guitarist. Enjoy. Rip Eva.

Such a sad yet angelic voice that was cut short from Melanoma cancer - just when she was about to explode on the musical world .
The melancholy lilt of this song makes me think she knew she didn't have much time to share her gift with the world - and what a gift she left for us all...but now she sings with the Angels.
Just watching her sing this beautiful song, and the way she delivers it, brings a tear to my eyes knowing that not much longer after this recording, she would be "Somewhere over the Rainbow".
I could sense this hit you as well Sam as I think I noticed a tear beginning to form in one of your eyes. This song from her especially gets my tear ducts in a hot mess.
    Appreciate your channel!
Keep up the good reactions - especially Home Free!! 😊

I remember the first that I heard her was 2003. I was on vacation in Canada and it was playing in a gift shop. I now own every cd that her parents have released. There is a movie on you tube about her life.
You have a wonderful journey ahead exploring her music!

She only found out about her cancer in the Summer after this performance and then the cancer took her very soon after that. She could sing like this without knowing that her time was short which makes it even more special.

Oh goodness - yeah, this is most definitely my favorite version of this song that I've ever heard. Soooo moving. Soooo unique. And, so very sad that Eva was gone so shortly after this recording . . . . There's a mashup of Eva and Angelina Jordan covering Sting's Fields of Gold - it's worth a reaction if you haven't heard it yet. Thanks for all your content, Samantha. Love and peace! xo

Yes Angelina was inspired by Eva as she did mimic the version Eva created on her cover of Fields of Gold and not the original version from Sting. That’s why the mashup worked beautifully with these 2 great voices.
Any cover made by Eva is a complete re-interpretation and re-creation.

Most beautiful and haunting version of this song ever recorded! Eva tragically passed away 10 months after it was recorded. It is difficult not to be emotional during the performance, knowing that she only had months to live.

  • @douglasheath411

If you want to be in total shock over someone's vocal ability, listen to this live performance and then listen to Eva's THE BLUES IN THE NIGHT ! It's inconceivable that this is the same person singing. This is one of the reasons she was unsuccessful at getting a record lable to sign her to this overwhelming diversity and ability to cross over genres. Thank God she stuck to her guns and didn't give in to the pressure of being someone's money maker. Praise the Lord, God who blessed her with this exstrodinary talent He made his own plan of time and space to allow Eva to bless the World with some realities they were not ready for in another moment of time.

OK you have heard Eva's version and she is gone now...I would suggest you listen to young Lucy THomas's singing tribute to Eva, It is a better sung version and raises the bar even higher. Lucy has a better voice more range, more clarity. clearer, vibrato, and just a fuller more trained voice and she was only 17 when she sang the tribute. Best version ever... try her version and any of Lucys 60 recorded songs, including THE WAY WE WERE MEMORIES Her original award winning BROKEN DREAMS And she has a 5 year younger sister she duets with, Martha. THE CLIMB THE PRAYER WHEN YOU BELIEVE YOU RAISE ME UP Try them and be prepared to be stunned !!!
