When Murphy Clocked His Lap Of The Gods

  • Greg Murphy's Top Ten Shootout lap in the 2003 Bathurst 1000, dubbed the 'Lap of the Gods' is an iconic Bathurst moment.
For all the drama of 126 seconds, the lap will stand for a lifetime, and it's not just that he took a massive bite out of his competitors' laps, or that he went below the record so emphatically.
He did it at such a venue, on such an occasion, under so much pressure, with the lap record not broken for another seven years.
The day in 2003 Kiwi Greg Murphy took pole in record time at Bathurst is still remarkable, and the celebration, with his rivals applauding him as he cycled down the lane, stands tall above Bathurst’s most revered moments.

I've both ridden a fast bike (many years ago that one, before they started watching that road like hawks and did go fairly hard on it) and driven around it at legal speed. Coming DOWN off the mountain down through those twisty steep parts that just looks quick on tv has nothing on even at legal speed, you can try and imagine whipping though there and down that part you can't even imagine how they go so fast through there, it's a bit mind blowing actually driving that section at the speeds these guys go looks like it would be terrifying. All I know is, that particular section is a lot steeper downhill than it looks on tv and I'm blown away that these guys can rip through there at the speeds they do. Sparks you see aren't from the cars, it's these guys huge iron balls bouncing off the track.

Even more incredible fact - a couple of months later, Murph was on Leighton Smith radio show here in Auckland, and was taking callers.
I rang and congratulated him, and asked about the reports he had grabbed the wrong gear.
He replied, into The Dipper, he went for third, grabbed first, and revved the engine to 9200 rpm on the overrun. Note, the engines are limited to 7500rpm, but, can be overreved on downshifts.
I asked if they were worried about engine damage, he said, they checked the valvetrain, and all was well.

To put into perspective just how good this lap was, it was common knowledge amongst everyone in the garage that a sub 2:07 lap was impossible with those cars. It was a stretch for drivers, Murphy included, to turn a lap faster than 2:08. If you managed to do that then everyone in the garage knew you had one of the fastest cars that weekend. For Murphy to go out there and turn a lap 1.1 seconds faster than anyone else had all weekend was not just a miracle, not just 1 in a million, not even super human. It was Godly.

I've grown up with Supercars my dad introducing me to it when I was very young, Mark Skaife has been my favourite since before I can remember, my dad went up to the 2006 1000 (He wasn't going to go but he went to celerbrate Brocky) and he brought back a track guide, I still remember finding Mark Skaifes page because he was my favourite, we had a watch party for the 2010 Sydney 500, about 30 people yelling out loud all Holden nuts and 8 year old me knew this is what I loved. I keep coming back to this video to hype me up for my league races. Thank you Supercars for making my childhood, I've only just turned 18 and will soon buy myself a holden, my dad was a Holden man and was until he died, and I've been a Holdn man for 18 years. This is the greatest motorsport in the world, on the greatest track in the world.

Haha, I got a similar story mate. Grew up watching Skaife and Richards thrashing the Skylines around Bathurst as a kid, Watched Fury in The Bluebird on the mountain still in nappies..... Still got the great memories...... And now a collection of Nissan's.
I also have a friend who's likewise crazy for Holden and he grew up watching the mighty 05 fly around, now he's got a VK commie and a VF Storm.
I no doubt these tails are shared by thousands out there who this seemingly simple passion can be such an affliction.

I had already been in the US for 9 years when he ran this lap. I had completely lost track with more or less everything going on down under other than the Cox Plate and the Melbourne Cup and remember calling my brother only an hour or so after he and his gearhead mates had seen this. That was all he could talk about.

As a lifelong Ford fan, I'm not at all ashamed to admit that this was one of the most magical of Bathurst moments. Right up there with Moffat / Bond in the XC's in 1977, DJ throwing his EA off the circuit at Forest Elbow during qualifying 1984 and still making the race, or Larry Perkins last to first victory with Ingall in 1995.
