    I removed my EGR (exhaust gas recirculation) valve and throttle body on my 2.0 TDI VW MK5 Golf. As my engine management light was showing, diagnostics gave me throttle body not closing properly and high emissions. Cleaned both parts with white spirit and wire wool to get rid of all the carbon. Car runs smooth and no engine light 💡 Yaay! Common issue with new Diesel engines all because of the EGR valve!

    Very helpful vid Thomas!
    This was the issue with my Golf 4 ASZ Tdi. A mechanic checked it over & diagnosed a broken fuel pump, saying that it wasn't making any sound when turning the ignition over. I got towed home, googled the problem, found & watched your vid, lifted the bonnet, checked EGR unit - voila, exactamundo!
    I found that you can stop it sticking as an interim fix by manually moving the mechanism back & forth, you can feel the flap inside sticking & by gently pulling towards the sticking point you can push the carbon back a little.
    Many thanks for posting!!
    All the best! : ]

    • @EXOVCDS
      @EXOVCDS  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      ASZ is a PD TDI engine. Not all PD engines will have a shut off valve like in my video (the engine in my video is not a PD engine (hence the injection pump in the engine bay).
      Since your ASZ is a PD engine (no injection pump in the engine bay)... it should have an electric fuel pump (transfer pump) in the fuel tank. It is possible for the pump to be dead & the engine to still start & run (the high pressure pump mounted to the side of the cylinder head can retain fuel prime as long as the fuel system is not opened). I would still check the pump in the fuel tank to make sure that it is or is not working. Thank you for watching!

    Thomas, would this adaptation, to the minimum allowance of EGR operation have affected the readings of NOX to a point where the vehicle would still pass the emissions test in the old air care days?? Good Video Man. I will be watching a lot more of these.... can you guess why? Yep, Back in the Hood!!

    • @EXOVCDS
      @EXOVCDS  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Nice to hear! I think the change in routine will be good for you!
      I think those TDI's (diesel engines in general) were only checked for Opacity (amount of visible smoke) back in the day. NOX may be higher with less EGR (good point), but I can't say how big of a difference there is between minimum EGR flow setting and maximum.

  • @spelunkerd
    @spelunkerd 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    What an interesting design flaw, presumably motivated by some kind of emission goal. I wonder how it would run if the butterfly valve was left in an 'always open' position. I never would have made that diagnosis without outside help.

    • @EXOVCDS
      @EXOVCDS  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Many people delete the butterfly (shut-off flap)... excess carbon build up is usually caused by stop & go / low rpm city driving. Cars that are highway driven develop soot deposits more slowly. Excess PCV fumes cause the exhaust soot to stick & harden over time. Drive it like you stole it!!! At least a couple of times per week! LOL

    EGR code 17811 do you think it could be thrown because of carbon buildup? Or maybe n18 I really enjoy your videos man

    • @EXOVCDS
      @EXOVCDS  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Have you checked if the egr valve holds vacuum, by using a vacuum pump to activate it? If yes, how much vacuum is it getting when the engine is running (vacuum gauge attached to egr vacuum hose). If the vacuum is low, check the hose from the valve to the N18. If the hose(s) are fine, make sure that the N18 gets good vacuum from the vacuum pump. If vacuum from pump is ok, it's probably a faulty N18. A restricted intake can affect air flow (ECM uses air flow info to check egr operation). If the egr valve looks carboned up, remove the egr valve and clean it (the intake manifold as well if it is bad).

    Dealing with a 2013 golf TDI. Crank, no start. Fuel and timing solid. Removed EGR/flapper assembly (stepper motor driven in this model) and let air intake wide open. Still no start. Jumped relay 100 and it made the radiator fans spin full speed. Still no start. Think maybe I need to reinstall the EGR/flapper assembly before the car will start? Or can it start without those items? No codes from torque pro w/ Bluetooth scanner. Not sure which cable is correct to use with vcds on this year model so can't check vcds til I get the right cable. Any help is appreciated. Thanks

      Check if turbo / turbine wheel is stuck. Remove exhaust clamp at turbo / DPF, loosen DPF and move aside... try to get fingers on turbine wheel. Other option is to remove intake tube at turbo inlet and check for compressor movement when engine is cranking.

  • @obviouslytwo4u
    @obviouslytwo4u 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Will the intake ports be just as build up with carbon?.
    The reason I ask is I'm thinking of doing a total decarbonisation of the engineer and turbo. As I have capped of the EGR intake from both ends.

    • @EXOVCDS

    Hey there Thomas.
    Don't modern diesel fuels burn in a way that produces a lot less carbon buildup?
    How could this be happening?
    Is the ALH special?

    • @EXOVCDS
      @EXOVCDS  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      "Modern" yes... ALH TDI is 19+ years old. ALH is indirect injected. Common Rail TDI's are direct injected and fire the injectors multiple time during an ignition event. ALH only fires once. ALH also does not have a Diesel Particulate Filter that traps the exhaust soot / carbon.

    • @EXOVCDS
      @EXOVCDS  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don't think that the 1Z uses / has an "intake air shut off flap"... if your engine has it, then yes, follow the video and check yours. Otherwise:
      - does your injection pump receive power when cranking the engine?
      - do the camshaft, crankshaft & injection pump TDC marks line up when the engine is at #1 TDC?
      - when did the "crank no-start" happen? All of a sudden or did you notice power loss / smoking exhaust before the crank no-start happened?
      The more info I have, the better I can help.
