Ga-In is fantastic! One of SK's top singers and she's even been in musicals. 🥰 When Abracadabra was first released someone told me it was the most shocking MV they had ever seen. For me that will always belong to Dir En Grey's Obscure(please don't look it up!) but I really liked the MV for featuring a same sex relationship. I didn't know what K-Pop was at the time and honestly I thought it was Japanese. 🤦🏾♀️ The Abracadabra relay is just a lot of fun. Dreamcatcher are great at embodying the essence of a song and yet also making it their own. The relay needs multiple viewings because there is a lot going on in the background. I don't think I really saw Yoohyeon until I saw this and yikes she is gorgeous. 😍

We all watched the relay dance for "scientific" purposes multiple times. (Shit who are kidding, everyone thirsted and then we caught everyone in the back lmao then we had to watch it more!) This song would have been *The* IT song of 2009 - everyone knew this song, everyone was dancing the chorus part... it just had the incredibly bad luck that it was released in 2009 where SM was batting 1000. It had to go against the monster hits of Sorry Sorry (SJ), Gee and Genie (SNSD), along with Juliette *and* Ring Ding fucking Dong (Shinee) in the exact same year.
This song and Gee by SNSD where named top girl group songs if I remember correctly in 2009. 2009 in general for kpop girl groups where all heavy hitter songs tbh such a good year for kpop in general.
BEG are 2nd gen icons! A lot of their mvs are very interesting (also they all have interesting solos). I can tell you, as a kpop fan who was around in those days (yes, I'm that crusty) that this mv was not the norm and it definitely shocked people! It was banned (although in those days loads of innocent mvs were banned for stupid reasons), but the song slayed the charts and solidified their place in kpop history. I think that she's actually killing him becaus he is mistreating the woman she loves. I view him as the kind of obsessive abusive asshole that hunts down a woman who tries to leave him. You really need to check out Sixth sense, most political MV I've ever seen. Ga-in as a soloist is incredible. She tackles subjects no one else comes close to. Paradise Lost (about women being blamed for the lost eden), Fxxk You (about how rape can still exist in an established relationship), and Bloom (about female orgasm).
Actually, she kills both of them. The candy in the end is poisoned. (Just pay attention in the dead dog with those candys beside its body). The plot is: we don't know who is the cheater, since Narsha kills both.
I digress. Abracadabra reflects the spirit of it's time. Maybe not for Korea, but for many parts of the West at the time. And it tried to show this spirit to the Korean society for the first time (with a high level of success). The revolutionary Libertinism it expresses is something that cannot be replicated today, as the apolitical youth of this era is way more conservative in many ways. On the surface this isn't the case, but if you look deeper, it's true. Sure, things like LGBTQ is more accepted today, on the surface. But what's accepted is the conservative side of things. The gay Republican meme is now the global standard for all non-mainstream and alternative things. And after all this heavy support from the established Liberal political powers (which in reality express the other side of the same coin of Power), the fringes lost their edge and fighting spirit, and became a pacified mainstream. Many people expressing human rights movements like this are now incorporated in the systemic power structures, expressing things they wouldn't in the past. Also, the social media filters automatically censoring consensual $#%uality has limited the human spirit (we can't even write the word openly anymore). Back then, censorship gave value to eg an MV like this. Today, everything's censored in the most subtle of ways, making everything, including original art, or any talk about $#%uality, pointless. Everything is turned inside out. Today, the world of the underground isn't an endless party anymore, with the intent to set people free. Abracadabra is showing us a world that once was, where the next strong emotion and the next pleasure, the next big fu to the system, was just an underground nightclub door away.

Yes the impact of 'that' move + the way Gain executed it made Psy create a 'little' song called Gentleman that included both (the move + Gain).

I think that she's actually killing him becaus he is mistreating the woman she loves. I view him as the kind of obsessive abusive asshole that hunts down a woman who tries to leave him. You really need to check out Sixth sense, most political MV I've ever seen.
Ga-in as a soloist is incredible. She tackles subjects no one else comes close to. Paradise Lost (about women being blamed for the lost eden), Fxxk You (about how rape can still exist in an established relationship), and Bloom (about female orgasm).
Actually, she kills both of them. The candy in the end is poisoned. (Just pay attention in the dead dog with those candys beside its body). The plot is: we don't know who is the cheater, since Narsha kills both.
I digress. Abracadabra reflects the spirit of it's time. Maybe not for Korea, but for many parts of the West at the time. And it tried to show this spirit to the Korean society for the first time (with a high level of success). The revolutionary Libertinism it expresses is something that cannot be replicated today, as the apolitical youth of this era is way more conservative in many ways. On the surface this isn't the case, but if you look deeper, it's true.
Sure, things like LGBTQ is more accepted today, on the surface. But what's accepted is the conservative side of things. The gay Republican meme is now the global standard for all non-mainstream and alternative things. And after all this heavy support from the established Liberal political powers (which in reality express the other side of the same coin of Power), the fringes lost their edge and fighting spirit, and became a pacified mainstream. Many people expressing human rights movements like this are now incorporated in the systemic power structures, expressing things they wouldn't in the past. Also, the social media filters automatically censoring consensual $#%uality has limited the human spirit (we can't even write the word openly anymore). Back then, censorship gave value to eg an MV like this. Today, everything's censored in the most subtle of ways, making everything, including original art, or any talk about $#%uality, pointless. Everything is turned inside out.
Today, the world of the underground isn't an endless party anymore, with the intent to set people free. Abracadabra is showing us a world that once was, where the next strong emotion and the next pleasure, the next big fu to the system, was just an underground nightclub door away.
