      But children and young adults are the ones spending them. In a way, they have more disposable income because all their needa are met.
      That's not an opinion, either. It's an actual fact. Everything that can be is aimed at children and young adults. Terminator and Robocop were marketed af children despite children not being officially able to see them. So were cigarettes. And why do you think all these fruity, low alcohol level drinks like flavoured beers and ciders appeared? Because our generation drinks far less than the previous ones and the manufacturers needed an in.

    I was in college when Abracadabra came out and when I say “Korea was not ready” they were NOT READY for this to hit them like it did.
    It was culture shock, a viral sensation, dance craze, sexual liberation and awakening for an entire generation, memed by every comedy group,(there’s a 2PM parody cover involving a bathhouse and scrubbing) I think someone did the dance on an Olympic podium at one point? It’s also the point choreography for Psy’s Gentleman (which features BEG’s Gain in the MV)

    Brown Eyed Girls were a second gen group that were not merely sexy, but provocative. They challenged stereotypes, cultural assumptions, gender norms, and morality. If you break the MV for Abracadabra down, it's very disturbing. One of the members, Ga-in, was judge on Sixteen, the show that formed TWICE. JYP picked her for a reason.

    I can give you a whole rundown on Shinhwa, cause that group was my intro to kpop back in 2000. They were originally in SM Entertainment, which you can guess cause of the vocals. The adlib/intro in English at the beginning of the song was done by the leader Eric, cause he is the one that is fluent in English, cause he grew up in the States for a little while. 1st vocalist that you see is Minwoo, the 2nd one is Dongwan, Hyesung is their main vocalist. Their whole library of songs are fire,but I might be biased on that. As far as GG/SNSD, SNSD is what Girls Generation means in Korean.

In the Perfect Man video, you could see the orange balloons, which was their official fanclub color. I'm really glad you liked the Brown Eyed Girls!! I've always really loved Ga-In from BEG, so much respect for her as an artist. She has a song called 'Bloom' that is about, well.. Blooming lol feeling liberated and unashamed about being sexual and, as a woman, taking control of your own drive. Maybe that's not such a rare message here in the US especially today, but back then in Korea most things remotely sexual got banned for broadcast. Even back then when girl groups were either super cute or girl-crush-type, Ga-In and BEG took pride in feeling powerful with female sexuality.

    • @horangi113
      @horangi113 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Yes - Bloom made such an impact on me when I first saw the video! I remember my eyes popping open and going, oh my god, is this really what I think it's about (referring to the scene in the kitchen and the gushing pole dance, lol, but also, the forbidden apple, the flowers, and the actual sex scene)? I was amazed that a female Korean artist had made such a revolutionary video. If BEG's Abracadabra looked at the dark power of sex as a weapon, Bloom went to the opposite end of the spectrum and I actually do think it's still a pretty rare depiction and a really thoughtful and metaphorical video about a celebratory awaking to sexual love/loving sex, even here in the USA - where sex sells everything and is more often super in-your-face. In fact, the only video I can think of that I've ever seen that gives even remotely the same feeling as Bloom is Rihanna's Only Girl (in the World).

    OMG 2nd GEN went hard. To think i used to feel like they was so restraint back then. They were but compared to today they were f'ing wild. I remember when Abracadabra dropped, South Korea went wild and they couldn't control it. back then there was ALOT of varieties shows and idols would go on them to become more known to the public. Idols uses to interact with each other ALOT. The song was very popular amongst idols. I'll NEVER forget that parody 2pm/2am had to do. You should watch that, but the parody was apart of an episode out of a show. i think it was called Wild Bunny. I remember laughing my ass off at them having to put on this parody. That whole show was hilarious. Bris you should watch old idol shows. i swear you would be cracking up. 2pm, 2am, and Suju were comedy gold and thats just naming a few. Also alot of idols would be on some of the same shows while from different companies. It wasn't this segregation you see today.

Based on the arc of your GG reactions so far, I think you will dig "You Think," "I Got a Boy," and "Catch Me If You Can." Tryna guess which of those you will like best is tough, but I'm kinda thinkin' "Catch Me If You Can." 🙂

    Man, I got into kpop because of SNSD shortly after "Oh!" I remember when Mr. Mr. came out and it took me a while to warm up to it only because the chorus sounds just like the theme song to the old 90s TV show "In Living Color," and I've never been able to unhear/disassociate it.

    About the MV, I found this text that explains:"Look well at the concept at first, the concept of hospital, when a patient is going to a surgery and he is drugged, which makes your vision blurry and goes unconscious, that's why the camera angle and editing are done so; to portray vision of a drugged patient. They are adhering to this concept throughout the MV. The scene in black and white is the patient last dream, that he remembers while he was unconscious in the operating room. Even at the end of mv see this blurred effect to portray the dream. Guys, watch the MV again to see if I'm right...,I also recommend 'Mr. Mr.' Dance Practice, very Exciting.

    She was originally in a group called Fin.KL
    Since her retirement from Kpop she’s been featured in Jessi’s NuNu NaNa, Refund Sisters, and variety show with B.Rain “how do you play”

    for Shinhwa, you did say you wanted throwback kpop lol I remember when Abracadabra came out. They were amazing and it is certainly one group that I would love to see make a comeback. It makes me sad that for some reason, idols get older, starts a family, and netizens seem to just dump them. However I would love to see the older kpop idols return with more of a mature theme. I feel like the groups that are out today... are still a bit too innocent to pull off a mature feel of this kind. They just don't make content like this anymore.
