Did anyone see the boom mic from 7:15-7:27? What a HUGE mistake!

I like Paul Rudd, but God is he awful in this. He honestly doesn't look like he gives two shits, and he is near-monotone the entire film. Say what you want about Tobery Maguire, but at least in the new 2013 film its obvious he gives a shit about the role.

I agree. Rudd wasn't in top form here by any means. His version of Nick is a bit more sarcastic, snarky and unimpressed whereas Maguire plays Nick as more socially awkward, naïve and sincere. He certainly never mocked Gatsby. I like Tobey's Nick best, but Sam Waterson's Nick was pitch perfect, too, in the Redford version. Still haven't seen the Alan version, but I want to.

Toby Stephens (Gatsby) is a great actor... especially in the movie Jane Eyre... sooo cute he is...

This is a bad representation of the book.
Gatsby and Nick are suppose to be better friends by the point when daisy comes for tea, nick is much kinder and Gatsby who is much more on edge when he see's daisy. There's something really vulnerable about Gatsby at this part which isn't really captured in this movie.

This is not like the boo. Gatsby was very shy in front of Daisy when they first see each other

Why does everyone say that this is the worst version? Have you all not seen the 2013 version? Totally cringe-worthy. And to all of you who say that this scene lacks emotion, it was supposed to be that way. In the book the scene is very awkward, and to me this is a realistic portrayal of how people would act in that situation. Besides, I think Mia Farrow was totally creepy......

The thing about masculine love is that men relate to poetry, hardwork and aspiration to "woe" a woman but really women don't care for any of that. They want things that they can see like an Hermes handbag with shiny hardwares or a Rolex lady Datejust wristwatch with diamond indeces. Gatsby's approach is to show Daisy's his hard work, patience and persistence as an all encompassing dedication to her. In the end, she likes his tailored English Turnball & Asser shirts and cried to showed it.
