    ABOUT…
I am Rebecca and I am one heck of a passionate vocal coach/singer/songwriter/impressionist/health/fitness/self- improvement/anything that makes me smile!! I love anything vocal/singing related and geek out on it every day. I want to motivate and inspire others to follow their dreams…corny? Well maybe but it’s true. So what’s motivating me?? I had a huge tumour removed summer 2017 and my ovaries and fallopian tubes. The tumour was the size of a 20 week baby!! However, despite not being able to walk for a couple of weeks, and feeling generally awful…. It has made me create and do what I love! It wasn’t an easy time but I won’t let fear dictate my life. I didn’t think ‘why me’, there are plenty of horrific issues people have to deal with…it’s not always smooth sailing. It’s true when you hear, ‘Life is short’, the crazy thing is, I am glad it happened…I appreciate life even more and practice gratitude everyday…It’s so easy to get caught up with the little things…and I do sometimes, but look at the bigger picture, will it matter in a year or two…?
Also thank you for all your support. It means a lot.

That was probably the worst top10 by Loudwire, it seems like they chose random bands and their most low quality performances. I suggest the video "10 vocalists who can sing you to sleep and scare you to death" where you can hear the same singers singing both clean and growling/screaming c:

Don't know who made that video, but this is exactly why some people never give metal a chance...They never choose great moments with great vocalists, it's always some death and black stuff with poor audio quality, just to say "Hey, look how metal is evil, it will scare people" and this is just dumb...I'm a die hard metalhead and love almost every sub genres from traditional heavy metal to Black metal, but for someone who's not familiar with the genre you need to show them Dio, Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Nightwish, and maybe even Metallica or Amorphis, for people see how talented metal musicians are.

I would also suggest Unleash the Archers, Avenged Sevenfold, or Avatar. This list was a bit poorly named. "Reasons why non-metal fans insist metal isn't music and doesn't require musical talent", would have been more accurate.

    • @JoshuaSmith-fc8kg

Even some of the slower stuff from pantera ( cemetary gates , this love ) was really good and melodic back in the day before Phil lost his voice wouldve been a good representation of metal than any representation on this video . I agree that it painted metal in a bad light and didnt showcase the talent that is in metal , but , it was a video about intimidating people in metal , not nessisarly focusing on their abilities . I kinda hate videos like this as it has a tendency of driving people away from wanting to explore metal and the immense talent that it contains .

I don't find any of them intimidating. I'm not saying they couldn't kick my butt, but that's not what they're doing, and metal just isn't scary. It takes real existential music to be truly scary - it really has to get into my head. In fairness, one metal band/singer I can think of off the top of my head does do that a bit, Silencer - the anguish feels so real (and I assume it is - I'm familiar with the story) that it gets under my skin, and I appreciate that.

Music is an expression of who we are. Love, struggle, rage, awe, peace. The uniting thing about music is emotion and appreciation. Sure, metal is hardly everyone's cup of tea, but it's an expression of emotion and life experiences, and as such I appreciate any musician despite of their way of playing or genre. What's amazing, and also scary as F, is that music reflects on who we are and all of our faults and highs. In a sense music is the expression of the human experience. Emotion, tragedy, life. :)

This wasn't even any sort of vocal display, just a list of supposed intimidating musicians with short clips and poor sound quality. I don't know who thought this was a good idea.
Although I think it would be cool to see what you think of the other types of harsh vocalists. You already got a taste with Jinjer, and in a different way Devin Townsend.
Guys like Bjorn Strid and Christian Alvestam would be interesting to see your opinion on. I love both of their clean and harsh vocals, with Bjorn being more screamed like Devin(who actually worked with him a fair bit in production for a few albums, and does guest vocals on one song), and Christian doing more growl type vocals like Jinjer. Neither of them I would call naturally gifted vocalists so they're not the greatest live(although it is rather demanding), but I love their voices and delivery and melodies. Bjorn's evolution is actually quite amazing when I think about it. He started off with just screams (both of these guys are in Melodic Death Metal bands).
If you actually decide give it a go and check them out (don't be scared haha) here you go:
For Bjorn Strid: [ I'm gonna put these in reverse chronological order, besides the first song, so that the early stuff doesn't put you off haha(even though it's good)... but if you're willing to listen to them all, then go ahead and do them from the bottom up :) ]

I do hope this does not deter you from further reactions to metal/rock/etc videos, there's so much good stuff out there that you've yet to explore that'll more than make up for the disappointment here. I'm even a fan of a couple of the bands/artists showcased but the video is horrifying to be completely honest - everything ranging from poorly recorded shows to poorly picked snippets of said shows to just honestly improper footage for the sake of "ah! got ya!" shock factor... not good. That said, what impresses me the most is you kept your composure as always, I'm just sad that this was suggested by people who I would only assume are on your side and want to see you continue to develop a fondness for the genre(s) we all love and music in general.
At the risk of sounding like a broken record, I'd suggest you do Opeth (Ghost of Perdition and/or Demon of the Fall) or a song by Ihsahn like "Undercurrent" or "Twin Black Angels".

If you want to try some harsh metal but with lots of musical substance, I would recommend Ne Obliviscaris from Australia. They've got two lead singers, one is a harsh screamer, and the other one a tenor who is also a great violinist. The music is intense but also has classically inspired harmonies. Try the song And Plague Flowers The Kaleidoscope.

Now, said this, there are lots of male vocalists like Rob Halford or Bruce Dickinson (to cite some of the most famous examples) that are just the opposite: high-pitched, also strong and melodic heavy metal male voices, and comes to mind so many more... Timo Kottipelto, Kai Hansen, Michael Kiske, Tobias Sammet, James LaBrie, Hansi Kursch, Roy Khan (whom you made an analysis singing with Simone Simons, loved it

As a musician that loves great vocals. I enjoy listening to your speaking voice. Very crisp and clear. Maybe if I look through your videos I can hear you sing

you really have to react to DIR EN GREY.
They are an amazing Japanese band with an incredible vocalist.
the good thing is that although he may be able to do extremely ugly and scary sounds he chooses them wisely and fitting to the music and he has amazingly beautiful clean vocals.
One video alone doesn't quite sum up his abilities but let me suggesting you "Vinushka"(live)
It is a 9 min song with a lot going on i think you'll find this very interesting.

I would like you to react to "Dir En Grey Macabre live at tabula rasa (english translation) but it's a 16min song and I don't think you'd do that. (although it's a masterpiece)
IF you're okay with LONG reaction though you HAVE to do Macabre live at tabula rasa.
it is one of the MOST emotional Vocal performances that exist it is absolutely amazing and I'm not exaggerating.

Love that pink sweater and that pink frame contrasting with all those images full of blood and violence. Lol

Dearest Rebecca, only a great ear and soul for music can truly appreciate Tom Araya's scream, cutting across genres and all that. Hats off to you coach. 😎❣❣

It's very interesting your reaction. You should try Pantera though. Cementary gates. This song is vocally amazing

Whoever suggested this one needs to learn the difference between glottal screams and actual singing. Heck, the Phil Anselmo clip didn't even show him sing. Some of these guys actually have truly amazing voices (Gaahl has always been a subject of debate, but Phil Anselmo is widely regarded as one of the best. Listen to "On March the Saints" by Down to hear his runs and legattos.) Your reaction was priceless! Thanks for the great and entertaining videos. Your insights are amazing.

Not a great video for intense vocal demonstrations of rock + metal. Bad sound quality too, imo. I would think there's better examples out there for a compilation of extreme metal vocalists. This is a vocal coach, so she focuses on vocals, some of these short clips didn't even feature the vocals much.

Not sure why you're reacting to this specifically? This is more about their presence and attitude rather than their voices :p

What's even more interesting about Gaahl from Gorgoroth (and Gaah's Wyrd, now) is that he's openly gay. Take that, stereotypes!
