I was 7 and my biggest memory was all the merchandising and seeing the long lines at the theaters for the movie. When I did see the movie I was pretty confused and didn't think the people were actually dead.

Love how Tim Burton uses the grid of TVs in the editing bay to simulate comic book panels. It looks just like pages of The Dark Knight Returns (1986), one of his major inspirations for the movie.
One of the reasons this is my favorite, is because the horror element, combined with the dark comedy, creates such an off-putting feeling through the entire film. Just a general unsettling, sort of wrongness that fits Jack's Joker so perfectly. Batman Returns was dark and disturbing, but in the a-typical Tim Burton way where it's that cartoonish sort of scary-sad-gloomy feeling that everything else he does has. This one genuinely feels like you're in the mind of a killer.

I never thought about it till I got older how strange it is that the news showed the Joker-ified photos of the dead models instead of a “before” photo.
The Joker always hijacks broadcasts. Before TV, he would take over the radio. Dark Knight adapted this wonderfully, having him send video tapes to the news. Todd Phillips' Joker also adapted it incredibly by having him featured on every channel on TV (for killing Murray), alongside broadcasts of the riots he was at the root of.
Damn what a great point! I knew this joker was taking elements from the Tylenol killer and the Max Headroom incident (and other broadcast intrusions) but I didn't know that.
I've always hoped they would release this commercial in full, uninterrupted, and from the original source as a bonus feature on one of the releases of this movie. I mean, it's gotta exist somewhere.

Heath Ledger did a great Joker. Loved it. Jack Nicholson brought the character back from the idiocy of the 60s TV show and created the living embodiment of the character in flesh and blood. He was all at once scary, funny, campy, macabre, evil, entertaining, genius, and a total diva. He is the example to follow for how a live Joker should act. Always finding humor in the dark, recesses of the human mind. Because no matter how twisted, demented, morbid or absurd his “jokes” are, you always get the joke. This video with the Joker commercial is the perfect way to encapsulate this character. Also, Mark Hamil as the Joker is the Gold Standard but that’s animated.
Still the best scene in the 1989 movie. "He's been using Brand X." OH NO! "Only your undertaker knows for sure!" Bruce Wayne is like W-T-F?! I still laugh like crazy over this skit.
This was the movie and the performance that brought Batman (and especially The Joker) back out of the comic books and into the public consciousness. Every great performance since, from Mark Hamil to Heath Ledger to Joaquin Phoenix was inspired by this.
Man as a '90s baby I just kind of had to take this scene and premise at face value when I watched this movie on video, but now that I'm older and know a little more history, it's extremely 1989. The Max Headroom broadcast intrusion and others like it were still fresh in the public mind, and the Tylenol murders had taken place that same decade. This version of the joker was really a product of his time, this movie took advantage of the zeitgeist.
I think the most subtly horrifying thing is at 0:18 you can see their images are already modified by the Joker. He already has full control of the broadcast and just wants to broadcast Becky's death and scare people even subtly

One of the reasons this is my favorite, is because the horror element, combined with the dark comedy, creates such an off-putting feeling through the entire film. Just a general unsettling, sort of wrongness that fits Jack's Joker so perfectly. Batman Returns was dark and disturbing, but in the a-typical Tim Burton way where it's that cartoonish sort of scary-sad-gloomy feeling that everything else he does has. This one genuinely feels like you're in the mind of a killer.

The Joker always hijacks broadcasts. Before TV, he would take over the radio. Dark Knight adapted this wonderfully, having him send video tapes to the news. Todd Phillips' Joker also adapted it incredibly by having him featured on every channel on TV (for killing Murray), alongside broadcasts of the riots he was at the root of.
Damn what a great point! I knew this joker was taking elements from the Tylenol killer and the Max Headroom incident (and other broadcast intrusions) but I didn't know that.

Heath Ledger did a great Joker. Loved it. Jack Nicholson brought the character back from the idiocy of the 60s TV show and created the living embodiment of the character in flesh and blood. He was all at once scary, funny, campy, macabre, evil, entertaining, genius, and a total diva. He is the example to follow for how a live Joker should act. Always finding humor in the dark, recesses of the human mind. Because no matter how twisted, demented, morbid or absurd his “jokes” are, you always get the joke. This video with the Joker commercial is the perfect way to encapsulate this character. Also, Mark Hamil as the Joker is the Gold Standard but that’s animated.

This was the movie and the performance that brought Batman (and especially The Joker) back out of the comic books and into the public consciousness. Every great performance since, from Mark Hamil to Heath Ledger to Joaquin Phoenix was inspired by this.

Man as a '90s baby I just kind of had to take this scene and premise at face value when I watched this movie on video, but now that I'm older and know a little more history, it's extremely 1989. The Max Headroom broadcast intrusion and others like it were still fresh in the public mind, and the Tylenol murders had taken place that same decade. This version of the joker was really a product of his time, this movie took advantage of the zeitgeist.
