Yeah, I always felt excluded as a Sonic main over the years. Every time I went to locals for Smash 4 and eventually Ultimate, I'd always get greeted with a long sigh, disappointed look, or just ignorance whenever I'd pick Sonic on the screen. I never understood it. It got to me more than it normally would because I was constantly bullied for liking Sonic growing up, which affected my ability to share with people in person.
I play mostly slower characters, and I have to wait for Sonic's autism to kill him because I can't do it. I just stand center stage and wait for his brain to malfunction and run into a DORIYAH, because I have 0 other ways of combating the freak.
It's the whole point of the character, but that doesn't mean you gotta like it. Imagine if they added Gen 1 Dragonite to Smash, and all he did was hold you in place, dealing 2% of damage every second. That's all he did. If he grabbed you, he holds you down for minutes at a time before chucking you off the stage. It would be accurate, way too accurate, to the character's source material, but holy shit people would be *FURIOUS*. Gen 1 Dragonite players would be lynched in the street if they won a tournament, and for good reason.

There was a lot of character development that happened from Sonic Adventure to Sonic and the Black Knight. Characters matured, became stronger, and strengthened their bonds. That all went out the window with Colors. "Haha, Baldy McNosehair." That made Sonic as a character, childish. The Sonic I grew up with may have cracked a joke once or twice, but he wouldn't have kept up the babyish demeanor all throughout the game, much less the next eleven years of games. Forces "mature" storyline is a bunch of edgy mistranslations. Shadow the Hedgehog had a better story while being edgy, and it kept the character development from the previous games. (Okay, it may have regressed slightly from Heroes, but I can forgive that because it doesn't make sense that someone would say "screw the past" after getting amnesia and only finding more mystery.)

Yeah, I don't think they're actually gamers either. Sonic in Smash doesn't work the way he does in Sonic games. In SONIC GAMES, sonic starts off running slow and builds up momentum to get to full speed and when he tries to stop, he slides a bit first. IN SMASH FUCK IT. LET HIM STOP ON A DIME AND GO FROM 0-60 These are the kinds of little things that should have been fixed on day 1. For competitive AND common sense reasons
True, he was already the most hated character in terms of playstyle but it was not really an issue because he is not that strong offline so he doesn't get into top brackets. But as offline makes sonic a lot stronger, he became a big problem. I don't know if just letting him be is the solution because you absolutely can't control the hate the players will receive and this issue could be worse.

Sonic is my favorite video game character, but is badly represented in Smash. I wish they just redo Sonics move set completely and give him more variety of moves that complement each other. Even his stages are a misrepresentation of him. I feel like if Sonic was a newcomer, he would be a way better designed character!
I have a friend that mains Sonic that mains him since the start of 4 and I loved playing the matchup, he never camped to a point that we both just stood still. He was and still is an aggressive Sonic main and that made it weird to me when people would complain seeing him simply select Sonic.

As a casual Smash player I was a super aggressive Sonic main back when Brawl came out. (Well, actually *before* Brawl came out since I played Smash Bros. X, the Japanese version.) And after watching a lot of Clockwork's videos in the past year, seeing campy Sonics in other videos always confused me. Lol
As someone who also played Sonic since Brawl it doesnt make sense to me seeing him turned into this campy character. Its the least enjoyable way to play the character. Also as someone who has always been a Sonic fan it kinda hurts knowing the one place where your favorite character wasnt being verbally crapped on no longer exist...

Nota Robot sonic play style is to punish player mistakes so if you want to punish sonic you have to bait him sonic holding his spin dash is him baiting you to use you shield so he can break it and pull off a combo

I feel like given their light weight and shared speed a sonic ditto might actually go a bit faster than a sonic vs _______ matchup. Especially because both sonics know the movesets and will respond much more quickly to eachother than they would in a non ditto match
If sonic would have been remotely good, he would have killed melee lol. Melee players are babies who always want to see a rushdown/combo playstyle, even though they play a game with characters that rely on playing super lame to win (ICs and Puff). You add one more lame character that is viable and I don't think the community would have been as hype to keep the game alive for so long.

If you roll up to Smogon OU with a team of Quagsire, Clefable, Chansey, Corviknight, Toxapex, and (insert hyper offense 'mon here), people will straight up take the L and quit before you even start. I ran a semi-stall team with 3 of those Pokemon and people have said "see ya bitch" and quit. And I don't blame them one bit. I didn't realize that in my bid to beat stall cancer, I had become the monster I intended to fight.
I haven't lost to a sonic online yet. But I still hate him. It's just a shit character and every time I see that dumbass hedgehog's portrait I just know the game is now a chore and not a fun experience. Oh look he's spin dashing, oh look he tried the exact same combo literally every online sonic main tries like 5 times. Oh look he's holding auto target spin dash. QuickThePorcupine I to the highest degree disagree with you, items randomize matches that attempt to make the playing field truly up to the characters. Though fair enough my perspective isn’t the only one. I think that items make the game infinitely less fun unless you’re in a big group.

As a Sonic main I can say this video did well covering both sided of the argument. I remember using Sonic’s DownB once the opponent just flat out quitting the match. I personally never timed anyone out and always believe an aggressive Sonic is the best Sonic.

As a Sonic main I will attest since I always like 6wx’s style of aggressive play with Sonic- with that being said I ALWAYS play cautiously aggressive- The camping strategy is only against characters where the strategy is in order.
As a former Sonic main, I agree! Sonic is meant to be played aggressively, a little bit like Fox, but more instinctive and less technical (and without the specials). Leaving the action and camping goes totally against his mantra of going fast. Heck, it's even punished in many of his games. As for the "former", this kind of "hatred" is probably the biggest reason why I quit being a Sonic main. EDIT : On the other hand, seeing him escape from Meta Knight or all stuff like that in Brawl is indeed reminiscent of Sonic's game design, for "Don't get hit" reasons.

Here's a thing that interests me, I understand the whole Sonic being a very runaway style character but then there's the part about aggressive play being way more fun to watch and lame play just being well... lame. To me it sounds like defensive play in the Smash community is frowned upon to some extent. As a fan of seeing players like Jwong lame people out with 3rd Strike Chun for example I wonder why that is. I'm not a pro Smash player heck I don't even really play the game anymore but I've heard complaints about defensive play being for dumb people and tbh most of the time when I watch smash stuff it does seem that 9/10 times aggro's the way to go. Why's that?

@@chronostc4850 Yeah I mean, I liked melee too, it was the first smash bros. I ever played but at the time my older brother was the owner of melee. However as time went on I enjoyed the other smash games a lot more. Brawl was the first smash bros. I owned personally because I wanted to play as sonic. Smash 4 was the best of both melee and brawl in terms of feeling to the gameplay and I enjoyed that a lot as well. And now we come to ultimate, it's got the best roster by far and it still grows with the final fighter pass and the game has the best of all previous smashes, with the exception of some modes and content that were sacrificed. (I still wish we got a melee styled adventure mode for either 4 or ultimate, smash run from smash 4 3DS should been in ultimate, and trophies shouldn't have been cut out.)

Yeah, I always felt excluded as a Sonic main over the years. Every time I went to locals for Smash 4 and eventually Ultimate, I'd always get greeted with a long sigh, disappointed look, or just ignorance whenever I'd pick Sonic on the screen. I never understood it. It got to me more than it normally would because I was constantly bullied for liking Sonic growing up, which affected my ability to share with people in person.

It's the whole point of the character, but that doesn't mean you gotta like it. Imagine if they added Gen 1 Dragonite to Smash, and all he did was hold you in place, dealing 2% of damage every second. That's all he did. If he grabbed you, he holds you down for minutes at a time before chucking you off the stage. It would be accurate, way too accurate, to the character's source material, but holy shit people would be *FURIOUS*. Gen 1 Dragonite players would be lynched in the street if they won a tournament, and for good reason.

The Sonic I grew up with may have cracked a joke once or twice, but he wouldn't have kept up the babyish demeanor all throughout the game, much less the next eleven years of games. Forces "mature" storyline is a bunch of edgy mistranslations. Shadow the Hedgehog had a better story while being edgy, and it kept the character development from the previous games. (Okay, it may have regressed slightly from Heroes, but I can forgive that because it doesn't make sense that someone would say "screw the past" after getting amnesia and only finding more mystery.)

Yeah, I don't think they're actually gamers either. Sonic in Smash doesn't work the way he does in Sonic games. In SONIC GAMES, sonic starts off running slow and builds up momentum to get to full speed and when he tries to stop, he slides a bit first. IN SMASH FUCK IT. LET HIM STOP ON A DIME AND GO FROM 0-60
These are the kinds of little things that should have been fixed on day 1. For competitive AND common sense reasons
True, he was already the most hated character in terms of playstyle but it was not really an issue because he is not that strong offline so he doesn't get into top brackets. But as offline makes sonic a lot stronger, he became a big problem.
I don't know if just letting him be is the solution because you absolutely can't control the hate the players will receive and this issue could be worse.

Sonic is my favorite video game character, but is badly represented in Smash. I wish they just redo Sonics move set completely and give him more variety of moves that complement each other. I feel like given their light weight and shared speed a sonic ditto might actually go a bit faster than a sonic vs _______ matchup. If you roll up to Smogon OU with a team of Quagsire, Clefable, Chansey, Corviknight, Toxapex, and (insert hyper offense 'mon here), people will straight up take the L and quit before you even start.
I ran a semi-stall team with 3 of those Pokemon and people have said "see ya bitch" and quit. And I don't blame them one bit. I didn't realize that in my bid to beat stall cancer, I had become the monster I intended to fight.

QuickThePorcupine I to the highest degree disagree with you, items randomize matches that attempt to make the playing field truly up to the characters. Though fair enough my perspective isn’t the only one. I think that items make the game infinitely less fun unless you’re in a big group.

@QuickThePorcupine You do realize items are turned off to make the match about the players skill and not luck. Items allow worse players to beat better players because they got lucky.

As a Sonic main I can say this video did well covering both sided of the argument. I remember using Sonic’s DownB once the opponent just flat out quitting the match. I personally never timed anyone out and always believe an aggressive Sonic is the best Sonic.

It’s a minority thing I mained game and watch but is now a secondary and I thought the hate was a meme cause I play how I would like to be play against so aggressive and cool but when I found a ditto I realized that people were right
As a Sonic main I will attest since I always like 6wx’s style of aggressive play with Sonic- with that being said I ALWAYS play cautiously aggressive- The camping strategy is only against characters where the strategy is in order.
As a former Sonic main, I agree!
Sonic is meant to be played aggressively, a little bit like Fox, but more instinctive and less technical (and without the specials).
Leaving the action and camping goes totally against his mantra of going fast. Heck, it's even punished in many of his games.
As for the "former", this kind of "hatred" is probably the biggest reason why I quit being a Sonic main.
EDIT : On the other hand, seeing him escape from Meta Knight or all stuff like that in Brawl is indeed reminiscent of Sonic's game design, for "Don't get hit" reasons.

Here's a thing that interests me, I understand the whole Sonic being a very runaway style character but then there's the part about aggressive play being way more fun to watch and lame play just being well... lame. To me it sounds like defensive play in the Smash community is frowned upon to some extent. As a fan of seeing players like Jwong lame people out with 3rd Strike Chun for example I wonder why that is. I'm not a pro Smash player heck I don't even really play the game anymore but I've heard complaints about defensive play being for dumb people and tbh most of the time when I watch smash stuff it does seem that 9/10 times aggro's the way to go. Why's that?
The way I see it it’s a fighting game so yknow actually fight. I’d much rather be wobbled by ice climbers and get obliterated than have to chase down sonic or mega man the whole game
Lincoln Reid I’ll have to disagree with you there when it comes to the fighting game part. The whole thing of fighting games in my opinion is all the different gameplay styles that people can play in, I think we should be able to respect all of those gameplay styles. Then again I don’t know too much about Smash so I can’t really discuss that. Thanks for sharing your opinion anyway

Richard Alvarez I don’t watch any matches I only play smash and I play for fun. Fighting sonic just isn’t a fun thing to do when theyr constantly running away all the time idc about the character I think he’s cool but if ur just running the whole time it’s not fun

smash player has a problem with a character: "this is made in an uncompetitive way; no fun; trash design".
Like smash was ever made to be competitive. If anything the try hards needs to calm the fuck down or just stick to melee with their trashy and broken fox mccloud.

@@chronostc4850 Yeah I mean, I liked melee too, it was the first smash bros. I ever played but at the time my older brother was the owner of melee. However as time went on I enjoyed the other smash games a lot more. Brawl was the first smash bros. I owned personally because I wanted to play as sonic. Smash 4 was the best of both melee and brawl in terms of feeling to the gameplay and I enjoyed that a lot as well. And now we come to ultimate, it's got the best roster by far and it still grows with the final fighter pass and the game has the best of all previous smashes, with the exception of some modes and content that were sacrificed. (I still wish we got a melee styled adventure mode for either 4 or ultimate, smash run from smash 4 3DS should been in ultimate, and trophies shouldn't have been cut out.)

I never realized how fast Sonic is. I always dove head first into battle with him, using fair and up smash, and a bit of down b. I never thought someone could get cheap kills with running. But, it saddens me that Sonic doesn't have alot of work put into him
