Strapping's just waaayy too metal for my taste. It's not that there's anything wrong with the music, it's just far too heavy for me personally. However, Devy's still by far my favourite musician, and everything else he has done has blown me away. Bring on Epicloud!:)
"If you don't know how to respond responsibly and put your argument forth like a civil human then leave it." Well said. Now if only you'd be willing to follow this advice.
@The6Music6Man It's a slightly embellished Truth by Devin Townsend off the Infinity album. First track I believe, but it's missing so much without the rest of the band.
I've yet to see such a video. Then again, I haven't actually looked. I'm pretty sure I've seen some pictures of him in studio, but I cannot remember if he was actually making the album (in this case, Synchestra) or just screwing around.
Does anyone know where I can find an interview/video demonstration of Devin's album production techniques? I love the sound he extracted from his guitars on both halves of this demonstration and can only imagine the sounds that he could extract from a studio.
There are better ways to express this sentiment than telling someone to "get a room" with their favorite guitarist. I agree that Devin isn't exactly an "innovative" musician but he can do much more than sweep-picking and screaming/singing. Listen to SYL's "Two Weeks" to hear his singing ability and the song "Deep Peace" from his Terria album to hear the melodies he can create with a guitar.
LOL, I have been thinking about Axe-fx,never played one.I could buy one online, and return within 30 days if I would not like it.I heard new one is coming,it will be possible to edit patches in the computer. So far I have been spending more time switching cables, pedals and amps than actually playing.
well i heard he was steve vais second guitarist and vocallist at some point, so yep, to say hes good is an understatement, ive just taken up playing guitar because of devy and strapping young lad!!
Not many people may know this, but this guy is one of jari maenpaas main inlfuences, AKA, Frontman of wintersun. I can hear the influence from this is jaris work
I wonder what all those Rectifier haters have to say now! What a great tone, My Engl Savage could not quite get this organic grainy vibe, but I guess Rectos are in a different category of amps,so I should not compare these two.I would appreciate any feedback on the subject.
Yes. Maybe in two centuries or so, people will recover his work and be amazed at how advanced Devy was in his music, you know, like Van Gogh (sp?) his works were discovered and praised long time after his death.
I used D'add's, but i find that the good old Ernie Balls are just as good ( i have even read speculation they could be made in the same factories...) But they are easier to use and mix and mach because each one is in its own bag, instead of all of them lumped together.
you know what, you're right, guitarists shoudl use no amps, no effects and just have acoustic guitars playing death metala dn thrash metal and all that other good stuff. thank you sir, you are an ensightful human being (i do hope the sarcasm is pouring out your somputer screen)
You do realise that Devin Townsend is the most sought after producer for albums these days? How can you say he is not a musician? Fooey, Indeed, Fooey.
'...and just spiffy!' Ha, love this guy to pieces. Don't know why everyone calls him ugly, he's pretty damn attractive I think! Just look at that hair! Oh, he creates delicious music too of course.
whats the song in the background before Dev plays a song from Infinity. I've been becoming a huge fan of Dev due to his originality and rebellion against conformist music including modern day sell out Metal, so i'm just feeding my brain with as much songs from him as possible. The dude is truely a cult icon and genius.
Further to that, I'd like to say I read the comment from someone else assuming it was you, disregard the first paragraph of my post, however take my point that music can only be orginal up to a point in reply to the latter lines of your post below your most recent.
i love the sarcasm in his voice when hes talking about strings and says: Lucky Me! :D
Very well said. Devin is definitely a modern day musical genius. Long may his legacy continue.
Could anyone tell me what song that is after the planet waves part? Where it shows his solo album.
That intro was
It's actually part of Planet Smasher, off of Ziltoid. Like GeneralTitanTitties said, many riffs in Deconstruction had been used in his earlier stuff.
Behold, Dev the great. This is my favorite guitarist/musical prodigy
Yeah right after posting that comment I found it out and it sounds amazing!
he's been playing for like 28 years... just amazing
Strapping's just waaayy too metal for my taste. It's not that there's anything wrong with the music, it's just far too heavy for me personally. However, Devy's still by far my favourite musician, and everything else he has done has blown me away. Bring on Epicloud!:)
most underrated musician....all his albums kick ass

This tuning creates a lot of interesting possibilities - wider intervals, etc. certainly a huge part of his sound.
"There black and ergonomic and just spiffy"
hahaha the man is a complete legend and an insane genious
I adore all of his music. :) He's one of those musicians that can take any genre of music and make it sound amazing. At least in my opinion.
this guys is a musical genius! His latest album Addicted! is amazing.
It's from the beginning of the song "Truth" with Devin Townsend Band, from the album "Infinity". Great one.
Man, he is good looking. Such a strapping young lad....
I wish I could discover him all over again too - Have as much fun as I did. First time I saw him was '93 playing with Vai, so long time fan here :)
wow..he is a coooool guy....and his playing is very melodic n involves soul..great guy
Devin Townsend is the man great shit
love the tone
wonderful guitarist
wonderful voice
wonderful
Im a guitarist 20 years of experience and Devin Townsend Rules man.
Anyone else notice that what he was playing at the beginning sounds like a very early version of Stand from Deconstruction?
@The6Music6Man It's a slightly embellished Truth by Devin Townsend off the Infinity album. First track I believe, but it's missing so much without the rest of the band.
it is 'Stand' he made changes over the years to it. gotta listen to ziltoid its a masterpiece
stand is from deconstruction get it right
God damn, his shredding is insane. I need to try out his strings because I have that exact problem.
one of my favorite guitarist
wow,i use the same tuning as devin for everything and i never knew till now. if only i could play that well.
I've always thought that explains his enormous span in musical expression. Different music for a different mood.
I've yet to see such a video. Then again, I haven't actually looked. I'm pretty sure I've seen some pictures of him in studio, but I cannot remember if he was actually making the album (in this case, Synchestra) or just screwing around.
Devin is one of my greatest idols.
Does anyone know where I can find an interview/video demonstration of Devin's album production techniques? I love the sound he extracted from his guitars on both halves of this demonstration and can only imagine the sounds that he could extract from a studio.
> tfw he plays the opening riff from Truth.
dude, same thing here like wow
he is so awesome!!!
There are better ways to express this sentiment than telling someone to "get a room" with their favorite guitarist.

Sweet hair!! Killer playing!!
it is from the song "truth" from infinity
Always have more respect for great musicians who aren't up their own ass and genuinely nice people too.
Devin publicly rocked a skullet for years....it proves he is more than human
I don't know about the second guitarist part, but he sings lead vocals on Vai's Sex And Religion album
@Destructerator The beginning is Planet Smasher and the rest does sound a lot like Stand or POTA.
LOL, I have been thinking about Axe-fx,never played one.I could buy one online, and return within 30 days if I would not like it.I heard new one is coming,it will be possible to edit patches in the computer. So far I have been spending more time switching cables, pedals and amps than actually playing.
It makes perfect sense. If it didn't, you wouldn't have been able to respond to it directly like you did.
well i heard he was steve vais second guitarist and vocallist at some point, so yep, to say hes good is an understatement, ive just taken up playing guitar because of devy and strapping young lad!!
thanks so much.
Toss in the fact that most sweet things are made with a little sodium and a little sugar and you have the reason it sounds so good.
I love that final joke he makes, and what a smirk at the end xD
Hey there i'm devin townsend!
and then goes into an amazing riffXD
i love this guy:D
amazing
I can see the Vai influence !!!
good call!
he was one of his students, dudeski.
damn that tap from 0.55 is a fucking genius raptus, love you dev
On stage, Townsend looks fucking insane, but offstage, he looks totally chill.
Not many people may know this, but this guy is one of jari maenpaas main inlfuences, AKA, Frontman of wintersun. I can hear the influence from this is jaris work

Indeed! -Ziltoid the Omniscient
Planet Waves cables, they're fairly affordable and they make your guitar sound good! Lol awesome vid Devin!
what a genious of man!!!!!!!
Great Scott! :D
Devin is the fucking definition of awesome.
Devin Rocks.
I had no idea he could play that good!!! :D
I wonder if Devin has switched to 11 gauge strings or 12, because now he does an open B tuning. Anyone know?
Ah, he is so nice. I want to hug him!
@theincentburns It's Devin.
thanks alot
Gotta love the skullet!
Yes. Maybe in two centuries or so, people will recover his work and be amazed at how advanced Devy was in his music, you know, like Van Gogh (sp?) his works were discovered and praised long time after his death.
Omfg, that tell sell music in the background when he sums up all his stuff. xD
esp tele
"Throws guitar threw the window" Fuck it. lol
great guy, great musician. hard to believe he is that kid from steve vay's vid.
And musical taste is a matter of opinion. One's musical taste cannot be better than another's.
@ProfPudding He's already got the senile part down.
Im buying a ESP ltd M-200, is it a good choise?
i actually kinda wanted to hear him play friends
@Destructerator Sounds more like Stand to me, right before Mikael comes in
great set of advertising there.. but also an even better musician
anyone know what the riff around 4:10 is from
Truth. Probably his best song, it's on the Infinity album.
all of mine shorted out. 3 of them. maybe bad apples. my cheap conqest cabels work, same with my monsters
I have a planet waves cable for my guitar too :)
I used D'add's, but i find that the good old Ernie Balls are just as good ( i have even read speculation they could be made in the same factories...)
But they are easier to use and mix and mach because each one is in its own bag, instead of all of them lumped together.
It couldn't be soon enough.
i whuld love to have the tabs on the riff at0:29!!! someone? :D
It's a level of disdain I keep just for these kinds of thing.
Or a typo, I forget.
you know what, you're right, guitarists shoudl use no amps, no effects and just have acoustic guitars playing death metala dn thrash metal and all that other good stuff. thank you sir, you are an ensightful human being (i do hope the sarcasm is pouring out your somputer screen)

Oh, he creates delicious music too of course.
Yes. He is like the Mozart of the genre, seriously, a music genious.
@ClownViolenceBoogie Yeah I absolutely love his solo/DTB/DTP stuff but not a SYL guy at all either.
refined musician and genius
Devin Townsend makes pretty music and scary music.
whats the song in the background before Dev plays a song from Infinity. i love devy
arpeggios start at 46:00 Am i correct?

oh thanx
@roidrage11 Devin's actually sold that one now. Peavey made him a black one recently.
That's a seriously ballsy telecaster.
Devin Townsend is the smartest man in metal.
