"penta meaning nine, and tonic being a type of drink" god I love this dude
Mads Harder Møller I didn't realize pentatonic meant alcoholic.
Penta means five. The Pentagon has five sides.
www.dictionary.com/browse/penta-
@@GaryBook dude he made a joke...
Mads Harder Møller Not really because everyone in Rock n Roll knows what Jimi Hendrix said: “if a six was a nine!” th-cam.com/video/oIozLaDpfVs/w-d-xo.html
I find Devin funny and humble and very intelligent.
Totally. Devin is great and very Canadian. Being a nice person is one of our great Canadian traditions. hehe. I'm both joking and being serious. Devin is a very smart and quirky guy. As much as I admire and appreciate his musical abilities, I would absolutely hate playing in a band with him due to the open tuning thing. I might be able to play bass with him, but my brain doesn't work fast enough to be able to play along with a guitar.
Devin Townsend is the Jim Carrey of progressive music
And your mother is the Alexis Texas of the ........
Okay?
more like deadpool
@@Delowist how is that an insult?
Haha yeah lol
I like Devin, not only is he a gifted musician but he's also a full mad dog too. It would be a hoot playing with him.
this is like 76th time I watch these daddario videos again xD It is easy to get addicted to Devin and his style of talking...super awesome guy.
+TheTruth3977 Oh, looks like you're addicted. Makes it seem hard to be mates with you. Pain can be addictive I suppose.
+Dwar.d oh... OH!
I love this guy. "I haven't slept in a couple days" Flips tongue around mouth like someone on coke. Love his sense of humor.
I love that you can clearly see the editing in 0:54 :D
"... give you this big crushing 'hey there, I'm a 15 year old rock god standing on the top of mount Vesuvius playing 15 marshal stacks to the gods!' type of sound."
I love this guy, his sense of humour is great , KI was amazing and I can't wait for the next one
I've always got him. That manic intensity that just takes over you. Then you have this quiet almost melancholy introspective time. Deconstruction and Ghost were great polar opposites in that regard.
I wonder if he prepares his jokes from before he has to do interviews or something. The pentatonic joke was pure gold.
Devin is awesome..
Thank you so much D'addario for doing these interviews!
Hahaha... "penta meaning nine, tonic meaning.... drink" love this guy
haha, where can I call to get lessons from Hevy Devy ? I'd learn 3 jokes and 2 notes every fuckin 10 minutes, cool
He actually does lessons over Skype...
***** Ah shucks. I wasn't aware of that. An awesome opportunity for those who managed to get them, though.
***** You lucky bugger. He's doing 2 shows over here next year and I can't get to either of them!
I love that he doesn't understand theory, but obviously understands music anyway. I'm a classical musician and my knowledge can be really constricting, but Devin's training is all practical/ear based and you can see how well it works for him
Stevie Salas also doesn't know theory and write some badass tunes, that doesn't matter. But maybe they will never compose such a cool/witty riff as "Norwegian Cowbell" by Paul Gilbert.
He understands general theory. He talks about note names, scales, terms like arpeggios, grace notes and whatnot. Thats all theory.
He understands theory. It's not formal theory, but it's his own understanding of how music works. The knows how chords, scales, intervals work, so that's theory.
jaketaz
Don’t use it as a constriction, but as an ace up your sleeve.
Pentatonic. Penta- meaning five and tonic meaning a type of drink.
I love this guy so much.
My favorite scale is the Flyxididilian for sure.
Penta meaning 9, tonic meaning a type of drink. Devin for president!
Guy, you are fucking awesome. Great personality.
Great playing great personality.
An amazing individual.
epic solo in the end - wonderful!
HAHHAH! at 04:30 he makes so good point about blues scales! :-D
This man is my hero.
He's really inspirational. What a cool guy. :D
@Andragon90 I like the Mydogadagada myself, but that's a good one too.
I love it. "you can point and do the knowing nod..."
I love this man.
flixadiddalian migadigada is probably my favorite scale
Devon is Legendary.
Meow if I could find other guitarists that play open B
He's such a goofball. Gotta love his attitude.
This guy is such a genius!!! Awesome :D
this guys funny as hell, i love it
legend
Made my day )))
OMG I love Devin....such a funny, honest and charming guy!
Love him
@sipinflames Dob 05.05.1972 vancouver Canada so that makes it a yes.
God i love that album. KI
His talent goes beyond playing guitar; I love his sarcasm.
I vote for Devin to do a stand up routine one day.
oni one word for this guy...as a teacher...KOOLNESS ,,,....thumps up if u think so too>>
I'm curious if Devin start's out a clean jam riff with his devin townsend band like at 4:33 to 4:40
@imbaguitar and he also called tonic a drink. Pretty safe to say he's being Devin. haha!
I like it how he emphasises the D# :D
I think Devin just won the internet for me tonight..this was awesome!
@0:58, the tiny phrase that he plays, is it in any of his songs? It sounds hecka nice.
He's effortlessly funny. It's great.
Open tunings, Modal tunings, and cross-note tunings are amazing. Wish more guitarist would use them
I'm a metal guitarist (I play lots of other styles too) in my spare time, and I use open tunings exclusively, almost always open C# or open D. I just understand them so much better than standard or drop tunings, and I find them more conducive to fluid playing, personally. Just my 2 cents.
I play mostly cross note tunings, which are like open tunings but tuned to a minor chord. I agree, and also play metal and because most metal guitarist use drop tunings, the alternative tunings sound better because you dont hear them all the time.
whoa, he's a lot more energetic and happy then I would be if I hadn't slept in a few days.
I forgot about the flixadiddly in midadagagada.
Some of the scales he was doing reminded me of Phil Keaggy. I think Devin and Phil would have and interesting jam session.
It's actually augment triad. There is only one interval between the notes - 4 frets.
Devin is so genius and cool guy
rambling.. like a rambling man, FUCKING LEGENDARY!
this guy is a god, haha
=]
I'd pay a lot of money to see him and Bill Bailey do a musical comedy show.
He's also an incredibile actor! :D
I FUCKING LOVE THIS MAN!!!!
you have to love Dev, im lazy and this is the scale i use haha and i cant completly agre with the "i want to jam with my buddies, and not be the one in the island of one " haha anyone who played on this scales could relate .
It's funny how much easier the fingerings for open tuning is for major scale work, but much more difficult for the blues scale.
This guy puts on a hilarious live show
ha ha, "you can point and do the knowing nod." lol....i'm just wondering what you need to do as far as setting up the guitar for a low tuning like that? I'm guessing having a tech do it would be the best? I would think the slots in the nut would have to be routed a little more to fit the heavier strings, action would have to be raised at the bridge and I'm wondering about the truss rod?
I have one guitar in it and I'm digging it.
@AleksisPelli for the album "ki"
One of the great vocalist of the 90's ...=)
Still one of the greats!
I always play in Flixodidilian Maydagadagada
4:33 If you think you're truly playing rhythm without making that face... think again.
4:28 Play it everywhere!
awesome. im canadian too. i thought he sounded like a BCer. i'm from toronto.
@IchigoBto Not a problem. Thanks for apologizing. All the best.
aaaaah... :) fuckin love this man!
@escaflowne3 Well, different folks different strokes. Ki totally blew me away. Masterpiece in my oppinion.
awesome
hahahaha , this guy is so cool . you just know he'd be fun to hang out with
Did anyone else notice that his first arpeggio is the arpeggio in the intro to "The Mighty Masturbator?"
@kirkhetfieldtrujillo I know. I thought I put "haha" at the end of that... My bad.
i like this clean tone. its really nice. is devin canadian?
he played open b in epicloud, didnt he?
Flixodydllian magayama is my favourite mode of the Godliness Scale.
@ 0:34 - "aboot" (Canadian pronounciation of about haha)
Since he stopped smoking and drinking he's gotten much wittier and funnier in interviews. I smoke and drink myself, but I gotta say I'm liking this new Devin. Oh and addicted is f*cking brilliant
This man is funny as fuck
I ALWAYS point and do the knowing nod! I am constantly in that state, especially when I look at myself in the mirror! *slaps knee*
@EthnHayabusa nope,you're wrong,penta means 5
I think we can infer from the latter that he was also joking about the former. Devin of all people would be familiar with the pentatonic scale. He could also possibly be referring to the amount of notes you actually play, not only the notes that exist in the scale not counting repeats on octaves (even though that's more than 9, it's something like 13) I'm going to go with the first.
"The secret's safe..." lmao
Flyxodydlian. That is my new scale from this day on.
Does anyone know if the little tune he play's at 0:58 is part of a song and what it's called ???
haha crackup dude, awesome video.
what size gauge strings do you use? and would you recommend a baritone guitar for that kind of tuning?
He is hilarious!
He is the Christopher Lloyd of Metal :D
fuck yeah
This lad is hilarious
@FireIstKrieg Damn right!!
and tonic meaning a type of drink XDXDXD i laughed so hard!!!!
LOL I LOVE THIS GUY
@IchigoBto Clearly you didn't notice that I was quoting him. Great job.
Oh i love this fucker so much....
I didn't explain it properly. I already know those rudimentary facts of music theory. I'm trying to figure out how he got 9 out of the pentatonic scale other than just being random. What I meant by that first thing is that although there are only 5 real notes in the pentatonic scale, when you play the pentatonic scale pattern on the guitar, you play 12 notes in total if we disregard the theory and include the octaves. 2 notes per string. 1 more for blues (2 more in the pattern).
