Samsung Odyssey G7 S28AG70 Monitor Review - Should you buy it?

  • The Samsung Odyssey G7 S28AG70 is the first 4k monitor in Samsung's Odyssey gaming lineup. It has a 144Hz refresh rate with HDMI 2.1 inputs, so you can achieve its max refresh rate with a 4k resolution over both DisplayPort and HDMI connections. The two HDMI 2.1 inputs support 4k @ 120Hz gaming from the Xbox Series X or PCs, but it's limited to 4k @ 60Hz from the PS5. There's native FreeSync variable refresh rate (VRR) support, and it's certified by NVIDIA to be G-SYNC compatible. It's different from the Samsung Odyssey G7 LC32G75T because it has a flat screen, and it has an IPS panel with wide viewing angles, which also means it has a low contrast ratio that makes blacks look gray.

    The fact that its a flat panel than curved makes it a lot more usable, but their use of IPS panels instead of the VA panel they are known for is strange nonetheless, which evidently introduced a lot of the issues mentioned in the video.

    To all people who is watching it , i found the solution . After you update the firmware 1.004 on the samsung support site you have to change your hdmi system on your monitor from pc to av. After that if it doesn’t get fixed then you probably have a astro headset with a small component to have audio and game chat separated or another headset , you havz to eliminate that one as well , because my astros little adapter has only full hd 120 hz output thats the reason why it didnt work check yours and you welcome

    I ordered this and ended up returning, might have gotten a bad unit but it was very very dim (definitely not hitting the 280ish nits measured by rtings). The G70B 32” was on sale so that will be here today. The slightly larger size with 4k will be great for productivity and still good for my 4090 to drive.

    Got it on sale and my panel had backlight bleed that for me has redefined what backlight bleed can be. Never seen bleed so bad it turns a night scene into day. Impossible to see detail in dark scenes with this level of bleed. Feels cheaply made compared to my asus, too

    I can confirm 100% that this monitor will run the PS5 at 4k 2160 and 120Hz refresh rate. You need to go into system settings on the monitor and change the PC/AV mode for the HDMI from PC mode to AV mode. Relaunch the PS5 and the game and check video output settings in both the PS5 settings and monitor settings.

    Anyone know where we can get firmware 1005? With DP1.4, PC mode, and Win11, this monitor sometimes does not come back to life after windows turns it off after a period of inactivity. It's what I call a "black screen of death". Even shift-ctrl-win-B does not bring it back, nor does power cycling the monitor. Only thing that works is a hard reset of the PC. It's almost as if this monitor puts windows in some kind of zombie mode at times if windows shuts it off due to inactivity.

    Similar version of this monitor (S32BG700) died on me after a month of usage. I believe that the issue is 100% software because it fails to wake up alongside windows, and this same issue is reported from other owners including some latest G8 model, it just doesn't see the video signal and you have to switch ports or just restart the PC to fix it (reconnecting to same port or restarting the monitor doesn't help), so its a firmware issue. What happened for me is that after switching from Adaptive Sync to flat 60hz when going full screen in old game, picture squished into white horizontal lines, eventually it started dying with artifacts few seconds after getting the video signal (same issue with DP and HDMI and port combinations), only the monitor menu worked and what's funny is that it kept pulasting and faintly displaying last picture it got from the video cable with none connected. I tried doing factory reset and it killed the monitor completely, started only displaying white lines after that, returned it under warranty. I've seen this wake up issue being reported for months and there is still no firmware update from Samsung.

      The downsides of the Odyssey G7 are not just the lower resolution and poorer viewing angles, but also the G7 has judder/micro stuttering when adaptive sync and the VRR option is turned on and are used with GSync or FreeSync. If you turn the VRR option off then everything is smooth, but the screen flickers. I am using the Odyssey G7 with a RTX3080 PC and it will be the last monitor I ever buy from Samsung. @RTINGS
    The test pattern that you use to judge contrast is not great because they misrepresent actual use case scenarios. They can make a minor problem (Local dimming) seem overblown and can lead a potential buyer to dismiss something they might be perfectly happy with in the real world.
    Something that scores poorly in your test may not look nearly as bad when showing real world content. Perhaps you can consider using a well mastered movie, an animation (Anime, Pixar film) as well as games and web browsing for future testing.
    Screen smearing is also an issue you really should test for because some people are more sensitive to that than say crushed blacks in an IPS panel.

    • @linethgonzalez3794
      @linethgonzalez3794 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Completely agree the black spots on VA panels are really annoying.

    • @RTINGSdotcom
      @RTINGSdotcom  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Hey Keith!
      Thanks for reaching out with some suggestions! We really appreciate it.
      First, we definitely understand your concern about contrast with real content. The issue is that it's nearly impossible to find real content that could actually be useful for measuring contrast. ANSI checkerboard patterns like the one we use are an industry standard which is why we use them. While it's not perfect, we do expect it to be representative of the real world experience. We will definitely pass your comments on to our Testing Development team to look into more though!
      As for the smearing, we would expect to catch these issues in the Response Time tests we do.

      @@MelsonSamdela so I always was a tv couch gamer but recently I’ve decided I wanted to switch, especially for fps like cod halo destiny etc. I game on series x, so about six months ago I got the odyssy g7, originally I tried to get the lg gp950 but it was sold out so I went with 1440p instead. I absolutely LOVE it. Took a little while to get used to the curve and being at a monitor, but I’m hooked now. it helped improved my fps gaming, I’m 30 now and my attention span for fps on a big screen isn’t the same, but I’m just as a sweaty as ever now being on smaller monitor. That being said, I also like to play single player games like Bethesda rockstar Star Wars and soon elden ring. So I def would like to have a 4k monitor, but there really isn’t anything out there it seems atleast right now that’s worth spending money on. For awhile i had my tv and desk set up next to each other as I had a large living room, but moved and now my desk set up is in bedroom and my c9 in living room. So I def wouldn’t mind the 42 inch for those single player games and tv in bedroom. But as for the odyssy, I love it haven’t had any issues and it runs my games sooo smoothly, and even streaming tv apps is great on it. I bought a little rgb sound bar for it and everything.

      @@willc4920 ahh no way sounds very similar to me at the moment I play my FPS games like halo and apex on my series x and 1080p monitor. I have a ps5 set up at the tv, and have been using that for more RPG type games. But now Microsoft are buying up all of these companies like bathesda etc I want to be ready and have something that will be good for both FPS and RPG games. So I don’t have to move my Xbox set up downstairs just to play them. Also games on ps5 cost more usually so if a game comes out for both I tend to just get the better offer.
      I am really considering getting the 1440p g7 odyssey as it looks like the best of both worlds for now and then in a few years when a worthwhile 4K 120hz monitor comes out I might consider an upgrade.

    • @RTINGSdotcom

      Overall, they're very close in performance. They have many of the same features with a 144Hz refresh rate and native FreeSync support, but the Gigabyte has better motion handling as the response time is much better at 60Hz. However, the HDMI 2.1 inputs on the Samsung support more bandwidth than those on the Gigabyte, as they can support up to 40 Gbps while the Gigabyte is 24 Gbps. This means that you don't need Display Stream Compression for 4k gaming at 120 fps from certain sources on the Samsung, like from the Xbox Series X.
