After playing Sekiro and getting used to using shuriken to knock enemies out of the air, when I first played this fight it really felt like you should be able to throw something at her to interrupt Waterfowl Dance. Eventually I gave up on that idea, so it’s cool to see that actually can work.
She can also stagger out of the dance and get intrerupted if she bleeds while doing her wind up, happened to me as well and to Ongbal in this video too :P...dunno if it's the same for when Frost proccs it's dmg.
tbh gravity spells should be able to do it, even though they don't seem able to. like radahn melts to scarlet rot, so it feels like gravity should be her Achilles heel given the lore.

Is it possible to parry the move where she spins in place? It just seemingly goes through the shield with no clang. Another move I have trouble parrying is the quick slash, but I probably need to just train my reaction on that one.
One of the devs' cheeky tactics lol. Also the misleading wind up and delayed swings to throw people off. We should all play Elden Ring drunk to sync with these delayed swings.
Very true. Honestly I'll probably get inundated with "git gud" messages til I go grey but I feel that Malenia (blade of Miquella if you were unaware) is too much like a Sekiro boss to be applicable to Elden Ring. Is she impossible to beat? Absolutely not. It's just that a lot of builds have limited options in safely punishing her moves (unless youre a parry god like our boi here).

@@marcoleung311-v7j I just finished my first fight against her before coming here. I was using 3-5 kukri (room for a pot to heal w/ 3) because I saw Ongbal do it against Godskin Duo. One time I hit a nasty 2k bleed proc right as the fight started lmao
for casual player like me, this pot trick is not viable, when she is up in the air I am already too late with it. relaying on this RNG move makes no sense to me as it is harder than just being aggressive towards her. its easier to use bloodhound step + roll out of it.

I spent 4 days trying to parry her. I cannot consistently parry her fast attack. Because it looks like her jump-strafing to our right, and you have like 6frames to react which attack it will be. It is way too fast. Then I try to heal so I keep my distance a bit, but she does this rush down attack with a little red sparkle that you also need to parry super quick, else it is 3 slashes that end you. As a first time Soul player. I think this boss is overtuned. I parry a lot of other bosses to death and it is fun and my playstyle, but this one, you need a way higher level of skill that is just too hard due to these 2 fast attacks. At the end of the 4th day, i killed her in 5 tries with a bloody slash. A bit disappointed I had to resort to that.
@@Polopollo75 Similar situation here. I got her full moveset down with dagger parry, except for the obligatory 2 slashes of damage on waterfowl, and parrying her none frame startup jab attack. I could’ve done it eventually with good RNG but after grinding her for 20 hours I was ready to be done, so I leaned a lot harder on corpse piler than I would’ve liked to. Seeing this makes me want to give dagger parrying her jab another shot, but I’m not sure I wanna run a whole nother NG cycle on this build just to get there and realize I’m still not Ongbal lol
I think it's worth mentioning that a part of the reason this strategy is so effective is also that River's deals fire damage which resets the frostbite and let's you pot stagger her at any point. Great find, guessing deaths against her are going to start dropping after this makes circulation. Also, seeing such mastery of a fight is always so beautiful.
Would've been the absolute icing on the cake if u finished her with a deathblow. The fact that you also space yourself properly before doing "mortal blade" combo to mimic sekiro, the blade parries and "shuriken" her out of the air were great details 🙌
I think he spaced himself before the rivers of blood art is because the attack moves you forward so it may miss or put him in a bad position if he is too close to Malenia.
knocking her out of waterfowl with the freezing pot is such fantastic tech. I was aware of knocking her out but hadn't found a consistent way to do so - this is incredible.
Its not the pots , its the status effect , if you manage to proc bleed on her or frost on her while she's midair like that , it breaks the move all together.
When i thought you couldn’t make it look any easier i was hit with 2:05 … gave me a chuckle remembering how i’d panic seeing the start up of this move… P.s the Freeze pot when she tried the waterfall dance was majestic. 10/10💪🏆
I've had a pot theory like this for a bit now and I'm so glad to see it work Pots are so cool in this game (1 sleep pot breaks godskin duo, cocktails for normal duos, etc) and this is probably as consistent/optimal as it is gonna get for this fight Praise the Ongbal

When I stared Sekiro (mid 2020 maybe) , I was just an average player ...I died and grinded my way through and defeated Sword Saint , and afterwards I stared Bell demon + Charmless till my Ng+12 .... But When I SAW YOU play the game .. Man... you were already a GOD , after seeing you play on Base Vitality / Posture I straight up went for that ....you inspired me so much ...... and I became a die heart fan of yours

Ah, I was wondering why Ongbal was using the dagger parry in the last video. I now see that it was possibly practice for this build. Very impressive!! Dagger parry is so much worse than buckler. Also, that frost pot stun is a real revelation. Great work, as always.
I have a theory that Okina is Shura from Sekiro. "Another's Memory: Shura" describes the actions of Shura after the end of the game in a folklore song: "Fields of bodies, mountains of dead. Down Dragonspring river, our country bled", which accurately correlates with Okina's sword and its in-game description. Also, Okina is said to be a "demon of a swordsman", which matches up with "a fiery god, demon wolf in red" description of Shura. Also, Rivers of Blood does fire damage, and the White Reed armor has a ring of fire on it. I think you hit the nail on the head with this one Ongbal, awesome vid.
I love the little detail of holding the guard while Malenia is using the Scarlet Aeonia to mimic the mechanic of recovering posture in Sekiro. Cool video
Tried myself a dagger-parry only run on her not too long ago. Decided to see how many people had done the same and stumbled upon this channel. Outstanding work here, mate. I always had trouble parrying her neutral double slash. Everything else I had a solid timing for. Eventually did it, but it wasn't hitless (got hit about 3 or 4 times, most of which coming from the aforementioned neutral double slash). After seeing this video, I see where I went wrong in my timing. Planning on doing a curved-sword-parry-only run on her next time. Heard the parry frames on that are much worse. Wish me luck.

This is a god damn masterpiece, you threw the freezing pot like it was a shuriken but it also had actual application cause it froze her so she didn’t do the bullshit 1000 slashes, that’s crazy, did you do the bleed proc on purpose too? That’s such a smart way to interrupt her I didn’t realise it was even a thing
considering the accuracy you need for dagger parries, this is actually very impressive, nice! and on top of that, taking woes instead of damage increase
Great fight, using the parry dagger is both a flex compared to buckler parry and of course a call back on Sekiro. However you could take this a few steps beyond! Blood slash has literally the same animation as the Mortal Draw! Also the weapon art from Yuria’s quest gives the equivalent to the Raven Mist (substitution jutsu my fellow people of culture). I’m sure you could even go on a stretch by calling the dragon fire breath the flamethrower and throwing knifes shuriken (or more like Lady B’s kunai). I guess we should just celebrate that Sekiro is recognized in ER!
You've inspired me. For the past couple days I've been trying to beat her with parries/ripostes only. I keep getting close but not there yet. Your video keep me excited though. Pot No Jutsu is a great thing to try!
These videos are the only instances where Malenia being impressed by the Tarnished strength seem accurate. I just spammed swarm of flies and ran in a circle after hours of loosing to her in genuine attempts at the fight.
I thought her mechinals were a bad design... But every time you upload a new video with her boss fight i can't believe you can domminate the fight. I mean, i like her move set, but i hate that she have a LOT of instakill attacks. XD It's a personal conflict cause i really like other hard bosses like Isshin, Owl Father, Orphan of Nos, Friede, Gael, Fume Knight, even Manus and Midir... But Malenia is a pain in the ass even with an spirit. I killed her 2 times and in NG+ i learned all her set in phase one, but in phase two you practically need luck and patiente with those damn instakills. But again, i watch your vids and i learn more things for the next time. Impressive. The only man who actually makes me think that maybe she have a good desigm. XD Beautiful combat. 👌🏽

Slowly walking away from Scarlet Aeonia to pose mid-battle is the best thing. And staggering her out of the anime attack using a freezing pot was genius!

in Sekiro, those attacks can be avoided quite easily. Dodging waterfowl dance reliably is super hard

Frostbite is what stops her attack ..you can't just throw to her anything lol 😅

DoH gives me more Bloodborne vibes, since a lot of its stuff is unreasonably fast for Dark Souls' slower pace

When I was fighting malenia I always use the t-pose gesture there because there's nothing I can do anyways.

works 2 times, so just treat it like a shackle item and it works great

Damn, I always have trouble reacting to her fast arm-spark + rushdown attack; seeing you seamlessly parry that is inspiring
I think if you are playing to parry her, her straight forehand swing felt like it required a faster input than the arm-spark attack.

I thought her mechinals were a bad design... But every time you upload a new video with her boss fight i can't believe you can domminate the fight. I mean, i like her move set, but i hate that she have a LOT of instakill attacks. XD
It's a personal conflict cause i really like other hard bosses like Isshin, Owl Father, Orphan of Nos, Friede, Gael, Fume Knight, even Manus and Midir... But Malenia is a pain in the ass even with an spirit. I killed her 2 times and in NG+ i learned all her set in phase one, but in phase two you practically need luck and patiente with those damn instakills.
But again, i watch your vids and i learn more things for the next time. Impressive. The only man who actually makes me think that maybe she have a good desigm. XD
