Another winner video. I agree that you can have favourite platforms. However, getting tied down and closing eyes to other options will limit what you can do and you've perfectly illustrated this here. I had a similar feeling when I revisited some platforms I abandoned years ago and always try to make sure I keep an open mind to all players and all options out there. The best solution for a specific use case or problem.

I've been using Brave for a few months. I immediately made it my default browser and as you stated in your video, there's not much of an impact in making the transition from Chrome. There have been some instances where I had to switch back to Chrome. Thanks to your video I now understand why and if I choose to, I have the option of lowering my shields. FYI, I won't be doing that. I'm okay with using Brave 99% of the time and switching to Chrome when I have an issue. I'm looking forward to when you learn more about the rewards and put out a video on that. I've simply chosen to ignore it.

I have used Brave extensively and have found it to be one of the best. I refuse to use Google Chrome as there are much better browsers based on Chromium that have stripped out the nastiness of Chrome and added a swathe of useful features missing from Chrome.
I am currently switching between Opera and Vivaldi with Vivaldi now carving out a solid lead as my go to browser.
I also have to mention Slimjet as it is a great browser as well and, in my view, doesn't get the plaudits it deserves.
Also, I think it would have been worth mentioning in the video that the creator of Javascript and co founder of the Mozilla Project which created the Firefox browser, Brendan Eich, is behind the Brave browser.

I just stumbled upon your video. I used to follow you in various media. I agree whole heartedly with your attitude towards privacy. I tried your link to the breach report only to find it was another click bait. So disappointed! Maybe it was blocked by Brave. I have been using Brave as my sole browser except on occasions where a password has been forgotten or lost in LastPass!
Thank You for your continued attempts at educating us old farts.

I used the Brave browser when it was still in Beta and had not been released as version 1.0 . I reported issues with the browser with respect to TH-cam. Bug reports were filed and at the time support via their communities was very responsive. It too Brave a year to fix the issue in Brave. During that time I had to switched back to Firefox. I accidentally discovered that Brave had fixed the TH-cam bug. Even though I had been monitoring the Github bug report there was no indication that the issue was fixed. I again tried Brave by then it was at version 1.x. I reported an issue with Brave not deleting cookies specified when the browser was exited. I reported this issue again via the Brave communities. There were a couple of responses from Brave staff and then crickets for 3 months. I gave up on Brave as a browser and went to MS Edge Chromium which I still use. MS Edge Chromium uses less memory than Brave or Chrome does.
Personally, I use uBlock Origin and uMatrix in all my browsers to block ads and scripts. I found Brave shields not worth the effort since I was more used to using uBlock and uMatrix. I find that Brave support may be spread too thin between BAT and supporting those of us who just want to use the browser as a browser and not interested in the Brave BAT.
Brave has had ongoing issues with people losing BAT tokens during monthly payouts and cashing these tokens out as money. Brave only recently got their sync2 version released in their beta version to allow syncing of the information between Brave installations. Brave sync version 1 caused issues in the browser so much so they had to disable it.

Thank you for your video and thoughts. I installed Brave yesterday and was very happy that it imported all my bookmarks from Chrome; as well as extensions. I am also very impressed that it has the same keystroke function to view and search in incognito mode as to Chrome. I've used Chrome incognito extensively and quite frankly whenever I open Chrome I immediately go into incognito mode. I'm very, very happy that I can do exactly the same thing in Brave.
Because it is similar to Chrome, I'm even more happy as it is not a steep learning curve.
I still use Ghostery ad blocker plugin as like I did in Chrome and swear by. (By the way it's free). Just to be doubly sure. And, I was able to set up my home page as like in Chrome.
All in all at this stage, even though I have not as yet elected to switch my default browser to Brave, I'm rather impressed. And, quite frankly it takes a far amount to impress this ole chook!!! (Young at heart!!!)

Excellent video. I switched from Chrome the day they announced ad blockers wouldn't be allowed anymore. I wanted to years ago, but Firefox had lots of issues and I was lazy. I have LOTS of hobbies, and links. That day I switch to Firefox and loved how far they had come, no more crashes! After a few months though, TH-cam videos didn't load. I even removed all extensions and containers and still had issues. So I switched to Brave for TH-cam, and FF for everything else. Now I think I'll take on the few-days-long task of moving all bookmarks from Chrome and FF over to Brave, and hopefully not get duplicates.
I never actually paid attention to Braves resources. I'm going to now, and maybe move over, because of your video. So.. thank you very much sir.

Steve, you inspired me to give Brave a shot. I looked at it a few months ago, while trying out Vivaldi for a bit. I went back to Chrome eventually because of some nuances that manifested with a couple of extensions on Vivaldi. I have to tell you, being on Brave for only a couple of days, the user experience has been fine; imported all my "stuff" including all my extensions and all is working great. What I did not expect, is how "liberated" I feel and accordingly how good I feel about the decision to move from Chrome to Brave, in a very purposeful way (this time). Thus far, it has blocked over 1,500 ads and trackers (so it tells me) and it simply feels good to know that I have cut off at least some of the access Google has to me. So far, so good! 👍

I agree. have been using Brave for about 6 months, manages my extensions better than any other browser as well as being light and fast. I also install Ublock origin for the few ads Brave lets by.
Yes, there are the occasional websites that don't open properly, but not enough to cause much of a problem.

  • @bobach52

I use Vivaldi as my primary browser. I use Brave as my default so when I click a link in an email the site comes up fast. I also use Brave for blocking ads in TH-cam videos. One negative about Brave - currently no syncing among devices. I understand syncing is available in the Nightly Build channel, but that’s not my cup of tea. I enjoy and learn a lot from your videos. Good job!

I use Vivaldi as my side browser. It's convenient for multitasking, but currently the sync it offers is holding me back from using it as my main browser. Also I'm just not a fan of the founding principle of Brave, the whole "we replace ads and give you cryptocurrency for seeing them that you may or may not be able to give to the owners of the site".

Been using the Brave Browser since 2019 and removed Google Chrome from my PC's, laptops and phones about 6 months ago. Best thing I ever did. Love the Brave Browser. Neat clean and fast. Only niggly issue is you can't change the desktop background to something you want. I like to have a plain black background. But, as they say, you can't win them all.

  • @peterschmidt9942

You make a good point about using a third party extension for passwords. I've been using Lockwise on FF (I also kept a text file just in case). When windows 10 decided to do an update and brick my laptop (thanks for that), I wasn't able to get them all back (let alone 10 years of bookmarks). I thought that FF's sync would store the bookmarks and passwords elsewhere...apparently not! When I logged into FF and tried to sync, all I got was a blank set of bookmarks -yay!
So it makes sense to use something external for PSW and Bookmark backups. I'm a bit over Windows, Firefox and google for that matter and giving Linux another crack. Brave might be on that list too!

As another commenter said, I also like the option to be able to go back to different chapters that are actually named to find something. I consider videos like this training vids and I will listen to the whole thing and if there are parts I want to study closer it's easy to go back and find it this way.
I have thought about trying Brave but It took me a while to get used to Firefox and set it up the way I want it but. I didn't want to relinquish another part of me to Google completely and I had to get away from complete Microsoft. After getting used to Firefox I am comfortable with it and I do use the built in password saver. It's convenient but I do have concerns about it as I would also have the same concerns about any other program especially if the info is stored in someone else's system. Everything seems to end up in China. I will try it some day.
One question I do have. Is it possible to run a browser in a virtual machine effectively and conveniently for an additional safety margin to prevent adds or sights from getting the info from my machine or installing tracking cookies and such? I'm sure it's possible but would it be effective?

just switched to brave a few weeks ago. happy with it so far. it is more lightweight and more secure. funny enough, the second extension i usually install was adblock plus but with brave i don't need to install it. as for password managers, i don't trust lastpass anymore as it has been breached before. i have since switched to bitwarden.

eta on my post below. My only relationship with Samsung is as a relatively recent customer, that has switched to them after being disgusted with pretty much everything else devices related on the Market today. After 5esting a Security Abomination sold by Huawei (to see what the fuss was about, and it turned people were rightly concerned), I picked up a cheap new Galaxy note 9 to check out. During initial setup, I went to install Google's Gboard, and the Note 9 warned me that Gérard was aSecurity Vulnerability, being vulnerable to keylogging hacks etc, and asked me if I wanted to proceed with the installation. A very positive start ! 👍🙂🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿

    Hi, Steve,
About a month ago Brave was trending on my radar so I tried it.
I don't use it now. It slowed my computer down.
Soon after Edge had an overhaul. And what an overhaul. It runs on Chromium. Like Brave.
The thing about Edge now is I can use Google Docs's shortcuts, eg Shift Ctrl Paste, which Google prohibited to other browsers. Similarly, and more importantly, TH-cam Studio 👍. With old Edge I had to use Classic to upload videos. Studio, I was convinced put a delay on non Chrome browsers. Not anymore. The Chromium engine means I can move through Studio like I was using Chrome.
So Microsoft Edge running on Chromium was an inspired stroke. I, for one, am very grateful.

I have used Firefox for many years. It has many of the security features you mention for Brave such as cross site tracking, ad blocking, etc. The Android app syncs nicely with my Desktop for history, bookmarks, etc. I have tried Google Chrome and use it occasionally, primarily when I need to cast to my Chromecast for TV if I can't access it otherwise.

I am looking forward to using Brave to see if it helps with this. Lastpass, excellent suggestion have been using several years now. A bit annoying when it doesnt work with certain sites. I have used Brave for about half a year now and generally find it to be very good, most especially when viewing YT videos and not being forced to sit through a bunch of commercials. However, on a number of occasions I have come to a website through Brave where something just doesn't work - a button is unclickable or some other function doesn't work properly. Then, loading the same page into Chrome or Firefox, things work just fine. I design and build websites for a living and have found I can't use Brave there - just too many things don't work - so I keep one instance of Brave always running for my personal life and Chrome for my working life. Incidentally, turning on Brave Rewards seems to result in a bombardment of "offer messages" coming in at a steady stream of notifications - so I've just turned it off. Like you, I found the concept too hard to grasp anyway!

Have been using Brave for 6+ months, not looking back to chrome, with a couple exceptions. Could not get brave to work with JitSi video conferencing. I also run several user profile on the browser, and continue to do so with chrome; could not figure out how to make user profile desktop shortcuts in brave. Also using Brave on Android. I use duck duck go for the search engine. Still in the Google universe for gmail, drive, keep, sheets, etc, so the transition away from Google is not 100% complete.
    Overall very satisfied with brave.

I have a question at the end of the video, installing MixMatch you had to lowerr the shield, would that only be for that site or all of the sites after that?

Hi Steve that basically the same with other Chromium base browsers . The only difference is Microsoft Edge. You can't log in with your Google account, which will sync up your extensions, apps, bookmarks and passwords (some browsers) . With Edge one would have to import them just like Explorer.

If one lowers the shield for Gmail, is that opening everything or privacy issues to G which was the purpose? I’m probably overlooking or mixing issues, so clarification (rather than stupidity slam) would be appreciated ;-)

Steve, I'm a late comer to your site but really love your videos.
At 4:15 we see your video clip within a photo frame of a Breach Report Newsletter outline. I think its really cool and want to try it out.
Can you please do a presentation on how to achieve these kinds of background effects?
    Many thanks.

It kinda sucks that so many programs and sites are so tied up with ads and collecting info for them to work. Is that the price we pay for things that are "free" on the net?

Edge is way too nice, way to capable, way to Feature packed & secure, just a joy to use AND plays SO well with the rest of the 'family' to even considered anything; just no reason, at all. When one has something this good & this likeable, it's a no-brainer. I tried Brave a while back, for awareness sake, didn't care for it.

Well Dotto - Your vids are always an enjoyment to watch, The browser I use mostly is Firefox - mostly because of the customizing you can do with the About:Config command and go and change parameters to get the speed up to load pages and data more quickly. But sad to say it has it's limits as those changes are becoming slowly ineffective. as the net is very fast why cant the browsers be too in loading pages...

Do you recommend Virtual Private Networks (VPN)? I don't see them addressed in your 39 video Playlist labeled Security & Privacy? If you have discussed them, please identify the title.

My friend just sent me the exe file that he installed it from and that has worked. It has installed Brave but it also added a file extension for Search Scene into Google Chrome. I've uninstalled the extension and hopefully all will be well.

This is actually less a problem with modern browsers and more a problem with the modern web. Sites like youtube make the browser load up extremely feature rich video players and buffer large portions of the video, soaking up RAM like nothing else. Even a news article site, without its ads, will still make you download stupidly high-res images and splash screens all over the article.
