Unlike in PR, when Super Sentai villains want you dead, they want you DEAD!
And the success of Jetman is responsible for saving a franchise that was going to be cancelled, so despite it's soap opera elements and love triangles, it's definitely a series worth checking out.

You should review Bioman, as this series was the one Haim Saban originally wanted to adapt. As well as Battle Fever J, Denziman and Sun vulcan, as these series were co-produced by none other than Marvel Comics; with Stan Lee wanted to adapt Sun vulcan in the US before Haim Saban did. The Soda Era (Goggle V to Fiveman) in general is also good to review as the ideas it pioneered are the basis for many things in future Sentai and Power Rangers. Though Fiveman and much of Turboranger, Soda was showing burnout.

    • @cassettecobra3848
      @cassettecobra3848 3 ปีที่แล้ว +8

I do wonder, how would've they been able to adapt it in the first place? By the time Zyuranger came out, its more than likely all of the suits for Bioman were lost, scrapped, or recycled.
And yea, agreed with the burnout part. Toei didn't give a shit about its employee's mental health, and it backfired on them greatly with the failures of Turboranger and Fiveman.

Gai doesn't just "become a nice guy" after a 3 year timeskip. We see him growing as a person and warming up to the team over the entire series and by the last 10 or so episodes he's almost always getting along with them, even putting asides his differences with Ryu and accepting Kaori's feelings aren't for him. Did you somehow just miss all of those episodes? The way you talk about it kinda makes it sound like you did.

I haven't watched Jetman yet, but it kinda sounds like most poignant character developments from other season, mostly of the sixth rangers. They stablish the character but then develop them on the spam of a couple of episodes, be it on the beggining, middle or end of the series. It can be jarring for some, but that's how sentai seems to work most of the time. The exceptions are season like Go Busters and Lupinranger vs Patranger, where you see the most flawed people actually develop throughout the whole series.

I think you're slightly mistaken about calling this a kids' show. Jetman and prior Super Sentai were marketed as more of a family show, meaning it could be a hard PG or even veer into the PG-13 realm. Zyuranger was really the start of Super Sentai being more of a kids' show, though even that's more intense than what a kids' show in America usually is.
Oh, and my favorite Super Sentai is a tossup between Gekiranger and Gokaiger.

As a fellow Brit who used to focus on Power Rangers and Super Sentai content, Jetman was always an intriguing series due to it being the Sentai series before MMPR. I think it was one of the first fully translated seasons that I found and is one of only four that i’ve watched beginning to end.
I did actually cry at the end (this was about ten years ago) but think because the team had overcome so much and although I didn’t really relate to any of them, I liked that they had their own unique personalities and weren’t 100% perfect by any stretch.
The mix of tone was jarring but raised stakes, the villains were evil but entertaining and the main title theme and ending theme are both some of the best from Super Sentai. It would be very easy to say this is an overrated series however I think it distinguishes itself from some of the meh seasons and does things in a somewhat realistic way (a happy ending with losses along the way). I was invested in Rie turning good again and surviving, Gai realising that the team/friendship were more important than his questionable antics and the Jetman as a whole overcoming the threat of the Vyram.
Although i’m less invested in Super Sentai and Power Rangers as a whole now, Jetman opened the door for me to try watching more Super Sentai and understand the appeal which i’m grateful for. Great review man 👍🏻

Honestly, I feel the need to interject here and clear up what is clearly a misconception on your part: the idea that Super Sentai is a children’s show like Power Rangers. Because that’s a flawed observation on two levels.
First, only certain eras of Super Sentai are aimed specifically at children. The children specific era actually starts roughly around Abaranger (Dino Thunder). Prior to that, it was actually aimed more at families as a whole to watch together. And the earlier you get, the older it skews. I’m surprised this is off putting to you, as Ohranger was pretty close in terms of violence and death (though so also ironically the season that began toy sales being an important focus). If violence shocks you in Sentai, let this be a trigger warning about Battle Fever J.
Second, even at it’s most child centric, Sentai is aimed at an older age group than Power Rangers. Sentai tends to aim for 10 and up, while Power Rangers is aimed at the 5-7 crowd. As a result, certain seasons of Sentai have been passed over it heavily edited due to different thresholds for violence in the two franchises. This was actually one of several reasons cited back in the day for not fully adapting Dairanger, and it was the reason the Morphers were changed when adapting Gekiranger (Jungle Fury).

Actually you are a bit off. Sentai is literally made for small kids in Japan. Basically kids under 10. Nobody over 10 actually watched Sentai in Japan. Power Rangers and Super Sentai are aimed at exactly the same audience the only difference is what can you show in western shows vs what can you in Japan. I know this because I spent a few years teaching English to Japanese. I dunno how was it 30 years ago. But it's like this now.

Growing up I loved Power Rangers. Mighty Morphin was my childhood and I watched all the way up to Wildforce. My personal favorite was Time Force. I don't know much about Super Sentai other than what little I've heard from others. I did however watch the Time Force equivalent, Time Ranger and I really liked it.

I love this show. And the reason is because the jetman famicom game, was the 2nd famicom game I played. Hence doing research, and finding about the show...and where power rangers came from. I like that they have alot of weapons. The bird smasher, bringer sword, bird gauntlet. Then the gun gets an upgrade. Bird/jet garuda is my favorite 2nd mech in the series of the ones I have watched. I've just bits and pieces of stuff I'd like to do...but probably will never get it. Megazord vs icarus and dragonzord vs bird garuda. I think icarus and garuda would win 😛
I liked gai character...the first time I watched it. This def is more for adults. Gai comes back in the manag I heard. K really don't care for the other characters besides Ryu. I'm never the main hero fan. But I n this case, I like ryu.

I just finished binge watching Jetman. The love triangle wasn't really a love triangle to me. I mean, Gai took his pursuit of Kaori seriously because she was the first women to ever reject him, which I don't think he is use to. At the same time, I knew it wasn't really going to last because he doesn't seem like the kind of guy who likes to be tied down. Kaori was in love with Ryuu, who was still hung up on his dead girlfriend, which is why he was all Gai pursuing Kaori.
I thought it was cool that they were going to have a couple joining as rangers but then my hopes were dashed when Rie 'died'. And then, when they got reunited, I thought, please reunite them for good. Nope. They should have kept her alive because they more chemistry then Kaori and Ryuu.
I like Jetman because unlike other Super Sentai heroes, with the exception of Kaori, they had to be convinced to join, instead excepting right away, they had no training and they did not know each other. I like the fact the fact they had to struggle to bond as team and individually, instead of accepting their role right away, whereas mostly, in most Super Sentai, it was either they were friends, they were already heroes, they were descendants of warriors or they were looking for the last person to join their team in the first episode. With Jetman, they had to start from scratch, they got their powers by sheer accident.
With the villains, it was interesting that they didn't have a leaders or general. it was just a group of villain, trying vie for the top spot to see who can defeat Jetman and conquer earth.
My only complaint and this is my complaint regarding a lot of the older Sentai female heroes, and I think someone made mention of this. They do not know how to write badass female fighters. I found this with Mei during Zyuranger and even sometimes Rin in Dairanger, too. It annoyed me that they either had to pair the girls with each other, or that they can't fight without the guys. which is why I prefer the PR girls, because they can hold their own on a fight. Yes, guys have muscle strength but where girls lack in that, they make for it in grace, agility and in being nimble. I wish they would show that in the fighting scenes.

    • @PomeloRetro
      @PomeloRetro  3 ปีที่แล้ว

I agree. The reason I struggled to like the characters is partly because you had two different types of alpha male and a relatively one-dimensional pouting princess. Meanwhile, you had another female character that was younger and had all the potential to be a badass but she was never really utilised.
Both Ako and Raita often felt like side-characters... whereas they had potential for more well-rounded characters arcs... and generally, I liked them more.

Ah, Jetman, one of my favorites and the only Sentai series I've actually finished (after making it through a good bit of both Zyuranger and Dairanger). I actually enjoyed that the story was a bit more adult than what we normally get in the US for kids TV. A couple things I thought of while watching the video.
I believe that the actors who played Ryu and Kaori actually married in real life, as well. I saw Ryu's actor in a Japanese zombie movie called Junk where he played a member of the Yakuza.
A few years ago, Joe Rovang (creator of the now defunct Writer's Guide to Power Rangers site) wrote out a Power Rangers style adaptation for Jetman called "Power Rangers Take Flight". In the story, he gives an explanation for why the villains don't send out more than one monster at a time: in this adaptation, the monsters tend to be territorial and will fight each other on sight. In the mid-season finale, the character based off of Maria unleashes ten Dimensional Monsters (all original creations in this case), and they would tend to either fight each other or affect the civilian populace, with one monster, created from a graveyard angel statue, being the strongest.

Gai was only a complete A-Hole for the first few episodes, holding his Jetman power hostage and eventually becoming the Vegeta of the show until Veronica when he tells Ryu that he owes him a drink. THAT is the part when they start to become good friends. The in the last episode he says, that he’s going to his “BEST FRIENDS”wedding.
If your best friend died, I’m sure his name would be a candidate for naming your own offspring.
You totally didn’t watch it my dude. You probably hated Gai from episode 2 and refused to pay attention to his parts.

I guess to some one used to more clean PR super sentai's death counts might be shocking but that's difference between how things are done in Japan compared to USA. In Japan they don't look down at target audience which in case of most tokusatsu is children. They trust that children aren't stupid and can handle concept of death without trying to hide or sugar coat it.
I do think that my favorite super sentai is Dekaranger but I also really like Gekiranger and Shinkenger.

After the disastrous Megaforce, I checked Sentai cause I know there is more to the pirate motif and booi Gokaiger didnt disappoint. And the rest was history.
For now, my big 3 sentai are Gokaiger, Shinkenger and Jetman.

Jetman is the very first Super Sentai that I watched (before Power Rangers was a thing) and as such, it will always hold a special place in my heart, but I think you do make some good points about its shortcomings. As I child I loved Ryu, but now I see how bland he actually is, and as for Gai, the reason he's so iconic is because of the phenomenal performance by Toshihide Wakamatsu. But as an adult, I think I appreciate shows like Bioman more: IMO it's got the perfect blend of maturity and candidness.
As an aside, if you feel that the deathcount is high in Jetman, never watch Liveman, it's even worse there (I honestly cannot watch Liveman without becoming depressed, it's that bad).

I believe this season was meant to pay homage to Gatchaman, down to the character tropes
Unfortunately that means a lot of the writing and characterization are very much of its time, down to Kaori having the personality trait of "the girl."
