You may have noticed I don't run mid-roll ads on my videos. The uninterrupted viewing experience is more valuable to me than the ad money I would get. If you appreciate that, consider checking out my Patreon. Thanks

Adam, I just found your channel today and I am absolutely blown away by the quality of your content. These are basically short film essays that clearly have so much passion put into them. I can’t believe I haven’t come across you before. The algorithm should be putting you at the top of people’s recommendations. I hope you blow up to hundreds of thousands, you deserve it. I’ll be binging your videos for a couple hours lol. +1 sub.
Edit: I love the way you derive video game experience and media to real life comparison and application. You are a very talented creator, observer, and communicator.

I just watched your three recentmost videos, all well above the quality standard these days. Particularly the Cyberpunk Ad video, very haunting to see corporatism in videogames and then being made aware of the fact that this art is merely imitating life as it is right now. Really love your analysis! I definitely agree on your point about how games are a part of the destruction of nature and natural resources, and yet they can be incredible loveletters to nature. RDR2 included. I guess for me RDR2 additionally has a lot of sentimental value in its depiction of nature, because I played it during the first year of Covid, and as someone who loves nature, it was a very soothing "simulation" of it, especially during those long winter months of no contact and stay-at-home rulings.
A lot of people have said that they didn't enjoy the meticulous and elaborate animations that Arthur does for pretty much most of the actions you can do in the game, but I find it one of the aspects I appreciate the most when I play it. In a way it gives me the same feeling of slowing down, of not rushing, that being in nature gives me. Of course, it will never replace the real thing, but back during Covid, and also now at times when I really wish I could be in nature, but can't, it's a welcome substitute and helps me find a similar calmness that nature provides me.
RDR2 is a game that really blindsided me when I started playing it, and one I wouldn't have expected to become such a comfort to me in stressful times. And it amazes me how it can give me such a similar sense of calmness and joy that I feel when I am outside, hiking or walking through woods and enjoying nature around me. That truly is a testament to the dedication and work the developers put into this world they created.

I always had a problem with the way the game treats nature, I do think the game cares about it but there are large reflections on the way the games industry sees player interaction and what it qualifies as something the game should control.
The primary way the player interacts with nature is hunting and that can be extremely destructive. Especially as the result of hunting is traded for cosmetics at the trapper or to make the camp look nicer. In other words destroying nature for consumption rather than necessity.
To me it’s really revealing that when you “study” an animal all the information you get given is how best to kill/destroy it. Hunting of animals that are explicitly said to be endangered such as the Carolina parakeets, bison and Florida panther which you are rewarded for shows not only a lack of a concern for nature but rather an encouragement to be destructive to it.
There were potential ways the player could have interacted with nature in the game for example on your map the player could place locations where animals could be found, i always found Cougars to the very northeast beside the waterfall north of Annesberg which I had a mental note of whenever I wanted to see one. Giving the player an option of tagging their map, to track animals is a way the player could engage with the nature in a way that in non-destructive. This is however handled by the game with Arthur drawing an icon for a region where they can be found which isn’t as specific as what the player could do and is less engaging. Why is that not worth the players involvement but shooting and skinning the cougar is?
A personal way I liked to interact with the wilds was to place bait down so I could see the animals up close and interact with them. It’s a peaceful way but the game has seen that as me fumbling a chance to hunt. It’s within the systems of the game to play as I do but it’s never framed as an option only the violent.
It’s perhaps a reflection on how the game sees the peoples interaction with the natural world much alike what you were saying with how running through on a horse disrupts all animals around, that we can only engage with nature in a way that destroys it. I personally think with the framing of approaching it peacefully would encourage people to do so because what it has now only tells people to kill.

Those are good points. I never hunt the legendary animals. The game world is a better place with them in it. Even if it means I can never get the coolest outfits

I love how you shone the light on this kind of issue, but still allowed room to enjoy video games like this. Huge thematically relevant video. I also love the connection you made between standing unshaken amidst a clash of worlds - arthur's stance on civilisation vs the untamed wild west - and the real world, where something very similar is happening, with climate change, pollution, increased industrialisation etc, which is a very real enemy nature is facing off against. OUR world is changing just as much as Arthur's is, but we must stand unshaken in our principles and continue to reduce negative impact on the environment as much as we can.
however, this kind of calls to mind the question, was it morally sound to make RDR2? Is it hypocritical for a game to promote an ideology, bring awareness of an issue that it is, inevitably, actually worsening? i wish the company did join a program as you said to help the environment but i do believe it was worth it to make this game. because it inspires people like you to make these videos, to educate people, cultivating their love of the environment in turn. that is extremely important, especially for future generations. i believe and i hope that RDR2, by simulating a love for nature, also cultivates that within people, and inspires them to change the world, however small a role they play in that - whether it be donating to a charity, employing eco friendly strategies, or taking on a job which preserves nature.
I don't know why this hasn't got more likes. Subbing. one of my favourite analyses of the game so far that isn't afraid to stray from the norm, pay attention to issues instead of ignoring them and venture into the 'real world'.

This game simulates wild life so good, that I always have a moment of feeling like a bastard when I have to kill a deer, a rabbit, a turkey or any other animal. Early on in this video, you call the american wilderness "untamed", which is thoughtless considering how many natives were killed in order to create the so called "american frontier."
The american wilderness was not so much "untamed" as it was "purged."
I'm not blaming you, just asking that we think about early America without upholding the myths written by genocidal European settlers.
