  • De-Dollarisation Drive: Why Iraq Has Decided to Abandon the US Dollar | Vantage with Palki Sharma
In a bold move, Iraq has prohibited transactions in US dollars. This surprise announcement last week was an effort to stabilise the Iraqi Dinar. But increasingly, the US dollar’s dominance is being challenged in West Asia. Palki Sharma tells how the de-dollarisation trend is catching on.

Yes and contrary to what many indians think that it is China which is asking these countries to abandon the dollars, its NOT! These countries are already facing economic crisis like majority of the nations post wars, Covid and now ukraine war. The only option they see is to abandon the dollars which has been killing many economies worldwide.

The next economic catastrophe will be worse because we cannot afford to bail it out like we did the last time. Last time, it should have been worse, and honestly, it wasn't as horrible as it should have been. Furthermore, those who default on their debts will be people with good credit scores and loans with higher interest rates, making the situation much frightening in many ways. Furthermore, we now have inflation depreciating the dollar and markets, when we didn't back then (apart from high gas prices).

This might cause the banking sector to lose so much liquidity that rates spiral out of control and are no longer in the control by the federal reserve. Let's get this into perspective. The US$ has several major roles in international finance: as a currency of settling international transactions, as a reserve currency, as a pricing mechanism of commodities and other raw materials and specially oil and gas.
It is NOT likely that it all these roles can be easily replaced by any existing or new currency soon. However, it does seem that many countries are serious about finding alternatives.
De-dollarization for Russia is out of necessity due to sanctions and for China is a sensible policy, as the US has weaponized the dollar. It has frozen Russia's international reserves and blocked the Russian banks from the international settlement system SWIFT. It is clear to all that the US can do the same to any other nation in the future, including China, India or whoever.
The Chinese Yuan is not going to replace the US$ as it is not a freely floating currency, and also it is subject to flow of funds. Therefore those who want to limit their risks to the US$ will try different approaches: use the Yuan for some transactions, try to use domestic currencies (does not always work, Russia does not want Indian Rupees, for example), try to establish a new basket of currencies.
A good solution could be establish a new basket of currencies based on the strongest economies of the Global South, not limiting to BRICS, and should be backed by gold to give it international confidence. In this way the Global South can bid farewell not only to the US$ but also G7. Game, set and match.

@@PeterParker-gt3xl China will try to promote it's Yuan as an alternative to the USD but there are drawbacks: first the Yuan isn't a free floating currency. It's exchange rate is managed by the Central Bank of China. Secondly, there are exchange controls on the free movement of funds in and out of China. Either they have to remove these drawbacks or work on a basket of currencies. We are likely to witness many alternatives being presented in the near future, not only by China but by the Global South in general.

The "ban" is for domestic trade/business, meaning you can't buy or sell goods for personal or business purposes in Iraq using U.S. dollars. Isn't it that way in most countries? I'm surprised the $ was being used on the street instead of the Iraqi Dinar ($1 = 1,306. dinars). The way she says it makes it sound like Iraq has banned international trade with payments in U.S. dollars. Presumably, when they sell oil to other countries, they still want to be paid in $ and not Iraqi dinars.

I am not so sure, Saudi willing to take Yuan for their export of oil to China outside SWIFT...Maybe Iraq willing to take Rupees when selling to India the same way...With US sanctions and their funds been frozen by SWIFT, it means if they sell their oil in USD via SWIFT system that money does not belong to them...

    • @ssa8479
      @ssa8479 ปีที่แล้ว

@@loveblindhate9318 I would think it belongs to them, but as a part of their foreign exchange reserves. Russia started taking rupees for oil it sells to India, but because there is a trade imbalance in Russia's favor, it is accumulating rupees it cannot use while trading with other countries.

While there is some reason to use a stable currency like the US dollar or the Euro for transactions, these currencies are managed for the benefit of the people of the US and the EU, respectively. Otherwise, it's just economically sensible to conduct transactions in local currencies.

This bogs down to the fundamental issue of local currency as a legal tender, that is policing. Very little to do with de-dollarization at all, whether it is this foreign currency or that foreign currency is not a matter of concern here. If I use the local currency, being the legal tender to buy something, the vendor cannot reject, as it is illegal and the vendor would be jailed. If I pay the vendor in a foreign currency, of course the equivalent, he cannot accept that, and I should not do that too, as my obligation and liability is not discharged, as the foreign currency is not a legal tender. So, what I do is for me to exchange my foreign currency into the local currency, and use the local currency to buy the goods from the vendor. Every national of a nation should abide by the laws. Very simple indeed. The concept of de-dollarization is something else, not really about the everyday business, or livelihood of an individual. I have no problem living in my country, and I have never heard that a vendor wants to demand payments in foreign currency, and if I come across it, I would report that to the police, though I am not a party to any transaction.

Behold, the days come, that I will begin to draw nigh, and to visit them that dwell upon the earth,
And will begin to make inquisition of them, what they be that have hurt unjustly with their unrighteousness.
And suddenly shall the sown places appear unsown, the full storehouses shall suddenly be found empty:
And the trumpet shall give a sound, which when every man heareth, they shall be suddenly afraid.
At that time shall friends fight one against another like enemies, and the earth shall stand in fear with those that dwell therein, the springs of the fountains shall stand still.
For the earth hast thou not judged with truth.
For thou hast afflicted the meek, thou hast hurt the peaceable, thou hast loved liars, and destroyed the dwellings of them that brought forth fruit, and hast cast down the walls of such as did thee no harm.
Therefore is thy wrongful dealing come up unto the Highest, and thy pride unto the Mighty.
The Highest also hath looked upon the proud times, and, behold, they are ended, and his abominations are fulfilled.
And therefore appear no more, thou eagle, nor thy horrible wings, nor thy wicked feathers nor thy malicious heads, nor thy hurtful claws, nor all thy vain body:
That all the earth may be refreshed, and may return, being delivered from thy violence, and that she may hope for the judgment and mercy of him that made her.
