- In today's video I will demonstrate the great Sandtner Organ of the work-day chapel of Ettal Abbey, Germany. This modern organ was built in 1996 and is fairly large (22 stops, 2 manuals) compared to the small room it is placed in. This results in a great clarity of the sound, little acoustics and a fun instrument to play!

Nice, articulate, quick to speak, and pleasant. But it gives organists' mistakes no place to hide. I like it. I'd like to hear some baroque dances played on it, too.

This is a beautiful modern mechanical organ. All of the individual stops are bright and clear. Granted with the dry acoustics in the small room, one has to play a bit more legato. All of the various combinations produce unique and wonderful sounds. I especially enjoyed the various flute stops with a slight chiff. I was surprised to hear such warm strings on an otherwise very baroque sound. The flutes and strings together with tremolo produce a warm ensemble. Paul, you did a wonderful job of presenting the various tonal possibilities on this wonderfully made instrument. The church is very modern and bright and the design of the organ and church complement each other well. A very well made video, Paul. Thank you for this.

This combination of warm string sounds and delicate flutes is a hallmark of a southern german baroque organ, but the reeds are missing or are very sparingly arranged. This type of organ is not designed for loudness or volume, but for presence and accompaniment.

This was a really wonderful demonstration of this beautiful organ. I so enjoy your demo videos, Paul. The lack of any reverberation in this church was surprising to me when looking at the the video scan of the main room. I noticed lots of reflective surfaces (stone floor!) and no "sound sponges" (carpet, cushions, etc.). The angled walls and ceiling must contribute to the sound wave absorption. Fascinating acoustical engineering! Really great video, Paul. Thank you!!

Ja, die Orgel ist hervorragend intoniert und kann durch die schöne weiche Ansprache des Prinzipal und der Flöten die doch sehr nachhallarme Kirche mit Klang füllen. Gut, die Mixtur hätte man sich etwas weicher intoniert wünschen können. Aber sonst nicht schlecht.

Diese Werktagskapelle scheint auf größere Besucherzahlen ausgerichtet zu sein - dafür ist die Orgel reichlich angemessen. Schön, mal wieder eine gute Sandtnerin zu hören - "ein schöner Orgel". Trockene Akustik? Ich höre eine Sekunde Nachhall... Dann wäre aber noch Hall reingemischt worden. Da kenne ich noch "staubtrockene", aus einigen Räumen Kartoffelsack- bzw. Sofakissen-Akustik - dort wäre quasi das größte Harmonium vor Ort 😉
Mit Zitaten und Themen schöner auch liturgischer Beschluß des Weihnachtsfestkreises mit Fingerzeig auf die Auferstehung.

Guten Tag, lieber Paul. Willkommen in der Kirche der Zukunft 😆. Diese Orgel ist sehr modern gestaltet. Trotzdem hat sie für diesen Raum einen ausreichenden Klang! Eine Barockorgel ist sie aber leider nicht und das soll sie ja auch bestimmt nicht sein. Danke Paul, für die wiedermal hervorragende Demo dieses Instrumentes. Es gefällt mir immer gut, wenn Du die Register im Video benennst, da hat man eine genaue Vorstellung. Und Tutti…. wie immer der krönende Abschluss. Danke für die wunderbare Demonstration dieser Orgel. Das österliche Halleluja war in einen „mind-blowing“ Satz verpackt. Für mich sensationell klingende Modulationen! Alles auswendig. Eine gelungene Präsentation 👏 einer interessanten Orgel, die aus der Werkstatt von Hubert Sandtner stammt. Eine Sandtnerorgel ist keine absolute Spitzenorgel, aber sehr solide und dem Stil der süddeutschen Barockorgel verpflichtet, was sie zu einer modernen Schwester der Höterich Orgel in der Abteikirche macht. Ich kenne auch zwei weitere Orgeln von Sandtner, die ganz ordentlich klingen. Wenn ein versierter Sampler sich beider Orgeln in Ettal annehmen würde, wäre das ein großer Gewinn für die Hauptwerk Gemeinde.

Well, at least you have an example of the typical dry acoustic of your average evangelical church in the United States. But maybe you could write an opus of compositions specifically for that acoustic. Maybe you could subtitle it "For A Dry Acoustic!".

The acoustic is appalling, but your playing shines out! It takes a true musician to be able to register a piece of music and deal with the "dry" room this poor organ has found itself in!

Marvelous organ. Really ugly church. Its sad churches are no longer built the way they were a hundred years ago. Thats why its important to preserve as many old ones as possible before they are all lost to the reformers.

I don't think ugly is the right word. Modern architecture can be beautiful in its own way. We don't want to reproduce churches from previous eras, do we?
What audio equipment did you use? This is perhaps the best i've listened to. And I somehow specially appreciate the drier acoustics too.... whilst the majority prefer as much reverb as possible.
