Should you practice vibrato as a fiddle player ??

  • In answer to a question, that originally I was going to include in a live broadcast, but time has run away with me today, so I have posted this quick video instead. Which I hope will clear up a few questions I have received about my way of playing Vibrato.
Hopefully, a few other violin/fiddle players may also be interested in this, as I can remember when I was learning thinking "how on earth can I manage to do that"? Well I think the secret lies in not spending too long trying to develop vibrato, as it will naturally occur in your own unique way, as you perform tunes in your own unique style.
I play at the end of the video a little extract from a tune I performed on video a couple of years back.

Dear Peak. I am learning fiddle and have got to an intermediate phase. I was worried about learning Vibrato and your video has cleared that up a bit for me and I shan't waste time trying to learn Vibrato but do as you do....Thanks

I finally pitched my chinrest and play my violin Baroque Style, meaning I am resting my jawline on the right side of the tailpiece. No more neck pain. Totally relaxed shoulders . No clamping down with my chin and hunching of my shoulders to keep the violin stable and in place and keep it from slipping off my collarbone . I have total freedom of head movement and my arms, neck and shoulders are totally tension and pain free. Best decision I ever did was pitch the chinrest.

Mark Knopfler wrote a piece called 'Potato Picking' that would play well with this vibrato lesson. The song's lead is a penny whistle but that easily translates to fiddle with lots of vibrato.

I use a shoulder rest every so often. But, sometimes it'll fall off before I'm finished! It's a real pain in the ... shoulder. :/
It's awesome how you transitioned to Friend from the East at the end!

I think that you meant shoulder rest. I’ve wondered about it. Gibbles at Fiddlershop doesn’t use one. Thanks! Good stuff! ✌️🌞😎🎻

This is very helpful. Do certain styles traditionally not use vibrato?
