Hey Courtney, videographer here. My advice is to film everything you can. I started filming backyard football games, created little league baseball highlights.... Work on the craft and when the opportunity comes seize it. People at our PBS station weren't convinced that we needed to cover the parade and I volunteered. 4-5 hours of carrying 30 lbs of equipment over my head while walking for 2 miles. Couldn't lift my hands over my shoulders at the end of the day, but I had a vision. Practice and act like you belong. Thats my two cents.
