  • The Forclaz Trek 500 Merino tshirt and long sleeve could very well be the best value for money merino baselayers right now. Excellent choice for beginners and casual hikers, but also for serious multiday trekking.

Have these as well, won't leave home without them. Also crazy value for money: Forclaz trek 500 gloves and waterproof over-gloves. Been using these for years now together with a thin liner glove. only downside is: they tend to run small, so definitely try them on before buying.

Still love my Icebreaker Oasis over several Decathlon products. The fit(for me) is simply better.

They are only about 60- 80 % wool. That is why they are cheaper than other merino wool products that are 100% merino. Yes... This mixture does make them more durable... But one needs to know that. For example, the trek 500 long arm shirt material: 66% Wolle, 24% Polyamid (PA), 10% Elasthan , Arm Material 83% Polyamid (PA), 17% Elasthan.
So the arms completely out of synthetics... Greetings

The base layers are however 100% merino wool, even if the trek 500 isn’t.

I jumped from HH to Forclaz for the same reason. If any HH marketing is reading this comment, make sure you get the message: Decathlon is kicking your ***.

I’d opt for Capilene over wool, but merino would always be my second choice. It would be first if it didn’t make me itchy though.
Great list though. Also, remember you WANT your base layer form fitting and tight to your body.. that’s how it keeps you warm. You can go baggier beyond that layer but the base.. keep it tight.

Aldi has a bit better and cheaper merino base layer. Only once a year is available and sell out usually all same day

The thing is, with Decathlon they don’t tell the source of the merino. On mos’t merino farms, the sheep are treated very badly, terribly abused. Many outdoor companies tell you it comes from animal friendly farms, which I find’s very important. Thank’s anyway for your info, I’m looking at other of your films also👍😊

I don't own any of the Decathlon baselayers and I too care about the source of wool.
That being said, from Decathlon's website:
"We only use wool from Merino sheep raised on South African farms that do not practice mulesing.
We decided to build a partnership with a group of breeders (Konsortium-Merino) to ensure respect for animal welfare and the environment.
This means that we have full traceability, which allows us to guarantee the wool’s origin."

The reason it’s a date more durable is because it’s mostly synthetic with a lot less actual Marino wool inside.

Watch out!! Decathlon are a bit sneaky with their MT500 range: the long sleeve version is indeed 100% merino, but their MT500 T-shirt is only 89% merino and on the yoke it goes down to 66%.
So if you don’t want synthetics next to your skin then only buy the long-sleeve which version is good value in the UK.
