    Cette artiste fut une des plus exceptionnelles mezzosopranos dramatiques que le chant ait connu.
    Une merveilleuse chanteuse par la somptuosité du timbre , la richesse d'accents d'une intensité frémissante, la diction irréprochable, capable d'une rare vérité d'incarnation dans les rôles qu'elle interpréta..
    Une puissance lyrique rarement égalée, jamais surpassée. Une référence absolue.

    Il più grande mezzosoprano drammatico, la più grande Azucena. I suoi bassi assolutamente imparagonabili per naturalezza, recitazione drammatica da pelle d'oca, dizione ottima. Capisco come mai Toscanini che ha avuto insegnato da Verdi in persona il tipo di mezzosoprano da impiegare, volesse sempre Lei per questo ruolo.
    Fedora ci manchi!!!

      Peter Freeman Stingani e Simionato tanto di cappello! Soprattutto la Simionato tecnicamente anche superiore alla Barbieri, Toscanini stesso disse che la tecnica della Simionato era quasi perfetta. Ma non possedeva quel “sacro foco” che possiede la Barbieri in Azucena. Paradossalmente lei con una tecnica un po’ incerta soprattutto negli acuti rende qui più della Simionato. Riguardo la Zajick non la annovero neanche tra i mezzosoprano con quel porgere a culo di gallina.

      @@80Mrmirko concordo ampiamente con te! Per la Simionato ho un amore speciale, ma come Azucena trovo Fedora Barbieri superiore a lei. Sia per la resa vocale, sia per la resa del personaggio.
      Poi, non so cosa ne pensi tu, ma io adoro anche Elena Obraztsova e la trovo una fantastica Azucena.

      @@martino5720 tra le cantanti “moderne” sicuramente annovero la Obratzsova ma anche Oralia Dominguez! Grazie per il tuo commento. Dimenticavo tra le artiste del passato di rendere onore anche all’immensa Elena Nicolai, Barbieri, Stignani, Simionato, Obratzsova, Dominguez. Non ricordo altro da annoverare per Azucena. Brumbry, Zajik e compagnia cantando pur avendo il mio pieno rispetto per la carriera vengono staccate da queste elencate di almeno due giri. (Modesto parere personale)

      @@esterbruno8604 Zajick has a better high end but the rest of the voice, the acting and what's not all goes to Barbieri EASILY. That being said, Zajick is still way better than most modern singers. Actually sounds decent and listenable. Opera nowadays is.. somewhat mediocre.

      @@KajiVocals I think she has surely a quite decent chest voice, her acting would be nice if it wouldn't be for her facial expressions. I like her in some roles especially (her Amneris at MET sounds actually fine). BTW Barbieri is a far better actress and even in chest she is far and far better. Barbieri is just incredible.

    In 1998, had the luck to assist to a Master Class given by her at Mannes School of Music in NY; later due to my family relations, had 3 classes with her.Even if she was in her late 80`s, she was still brigth and clever. Her recordings complemnted her teachings (an attack from high, with an intercostal support; always pronuncing well each vowel and consonat). She was one of the best ever for me!!!BRAVA!!!

    A time when singers were properly trained. Assigned roles proper to the capacities of their voice. We live in a desert of incompetence. Why? No one cares. The trained seals clap for everything!

      @@photo161 i'm sorry but this attitude right here and right now is the problem of the opera world. so great voices like these have existed since the dawn of opera, and only stopped existing by the generation of Barbieri and the likes of her? no! the invention of microphone, recodings, and of course poorly trained singers is the reason why we don't have such voices any more. that's it. instead of accepting the status quo, maybe we need to demand what we actually pay for: REAL opera

      The problem is not the non-existence of such voices -- it is the lack of proper preparation, training, choosing the right roles for their voices, and the willingness of students to allow their voices to develop, strengthen, and mature over time to such quality. In short, lack of patience, dedication, and the placing their voices into incompetent teachers, who do not deserve such titles -- more like butchers of the human voice . . . and so much more. Add to this greed, entitlement attitudes, and the general acceptance of mediocracy by the public to accept sub-grade quality in most everything, which they generously applaud, buy, and are, thereby, brainwashed into accepting general degenerate trash as the highest quality.

      This style of singing was literally in their blood in these days. So the question of proper training wasn’t such an obstacle. It was understood what this music should sound like by everyone and it was an extension of their speaking voice. Now it’s so outdated that people don’t even know what real singing is and we get the crap we get

    Barbieri was such a ham, and so much bigger than life! And she even sings the trills in Stride la vampa. And del Monaco is so handsome and looks like a true hero. They don't make them like that any more.

      @@EmilyGloeggler7984 Actually it's not. She was a true dramatic Mezzo, an almost extinct species now. She conveys the crazed obsessiveness of Azucena. She was a stage performer, and on stage, everything has to be on a grander stage in order to project to several thousand people sitting a long way away from the performer.

    Assisti Otello Municipal de São Paulo,alem de Nabuco e La Gioconda com teatro São Carlos de Nápoles.Entre grandes nomes como Del Mônaco estavam Gianni Raimondi, Elena Suliottis, Marta Rose, e muitos outros. Na época as Igrejas Católicas tocavam Músicas Sacras. Com a Orquestra e Coral do Teatro São Carlos de Nápoles houve a apresentação de uma Missa de Palestrina na Catedral da Sé. Era época do milagre Econômico. Eu era feliz e já sabia. A extinta Gazeta Esportiva trazia 140.000 Vagas de Trabalho nas Segundas Feiras. Só não trabalhava quem só gostava de fazer greve.

    volevo solo dire che mi aspettavo il top dalla Barbieri (il 100%); ma da: "...Del pari funesta..."cioè dopo stride la vampa...mi piace al 100%.
    Interpretazione scenica favolosa, VOCE STUPENDA, soprattutto nella seconda parte (il racconto della storia funesta). Sembra una zingara davvero. La sua voce talora è talmente scura da sembrare un contralto (fantastica voce, scura, dark).

      Плакать заставляют не оперы, а певцы! Поют-то все одни и те же ноты, но легенды потому и легенды, что не просто безупречно их выпевали - есть множество записей, в которых, технически, пение великих не безупречно, но их слушаешь и переслушиваешь, в отличие от "вылизанных" современных записей.

    "Io? Voce di petto?! MAI!" come ebbe a dire la Barbieri nella famosa intervista sulla materia...
    Ascoltarla in Azucena nota tale affermazione mi fa sorridere, e non poco! Per fortuna la Gencer nella stessa intervista la perdonò con molta bontà: "si vede che si son dimenticate che hanno basato la loro carriera sulla voce di petto..."
    Grande Voce comunque!

      Giulio Gallo Io adoro la Gencer, ma devo riconoscere che è sempre stata fin troppo piena di sé. La voce della Barbieri è di contralto purissimo. Qui dà una magnifica dimostrazione di voce su sostegno del fiato, senza cantare minimamente di petto.

      Mi vien da sorridere.... "Voce su sostegno del fiato" è la stessa cosa che la Fedora disse della sua Quickly durante l'intervista con Zucker... Ma la stessa Simionato negò l'esistenza della pratica dell'utilizzo della voce di petto, quando in realtà il suo cavallo di battaglia era "sul capo mio le chiome sento rizzarsi ancor" dal Trovatore il tutto cantato "di petto", in modo abbastanza volitivo...! Tant'è: al pubblico piaceva e piace tutt'ora!
      Per quanto mi riguarda mi risulta oscuro il motivo per il 95% dei cantanti professionisti NEGHI a spada tratta l'utilizzo della voce di petto, quando in realtà la utilizzano, e come! (E nemmeno la Divina Maria si astenne da tale pratica: "Suicido" ne è un esempio lampante...)
      Di recente, la "cara" Sara Mingardo (di cui nutro una profonda stima come musicista e vocalista) in un'intervista rilasciata alla "Barcaccia" su Radio3 ha dichiarato candidamente che lei senza voce di petto non sarebbe mai diventata "Sara Mingardo" e molte parti tipicamente contraltili se le sarebbe sognate! Però, ha aggiunto, uno studio accurato le è stato necessario per omogeneizzare la gamma timbrica della voce pur utilizzando tale risonanza. Ed è proprio su tale punto che la Barbieri cadeva in fallo: il cambio di colore tra petto e maschera era bello evidente.
      A mio avviso ritengo che un utilizzo intelligente della risonanza di petto, sia dal punto di vista timbrico che da quello musicale, non sia condannabile qualora sia fatto con gusto e "misura".
      Per il discorso "contralto purissimo" io non ho dubbi che il primo nome della lista debba essere quello della Manca di Nissa, sia per lo strumento, sia per la tecnica, sia per l'intelligenza interpretativa e la musicalità; tutti gli altri possibili nomi, per una cosa o per un'altra, non hanno avuto la stessa completezza!

      La Barbieri era uno mezzo soprano Vero .
      il contralto vero canta con una vocalità più scura e vellutata !

    Barberi era una Mezzo-Contralto, la rivalidad con Simionato no tiene sentido porque Giulietta era una Mezzosoprano con más gama aguda (hasta el Re6 sobreagudo), Barbieri llegaba al Sol agudo, pero su rango grave daba el Sol grave casi de caverna, su voz tan carnosa es muy adecuada para Azucena, Simionato tenía otras cualidades como un trino más perfecto y una maestría absoluta en la Coloratura (Cosa que limitó a Barbieri y no la dejó abordar nada de Rossini), pero amabas fueron estupendas en su rubro.

    Y pensar que dicen que los cantantes de antes no sabían actuar!!! Es a la inversa. Los actuales no tienen idea del texto, ni expresividad musical.Se sonríen o hacen gestos que no tienen nada que ver con lo que cantan. Sin mencionar que ya no hay voces como estas. Estudian tan mal, que no saben trabajar la voz, el fiato, el legato. Que gran época la que va de 1930 a 1980. 50 años dorados de cantantes espectaculares. La nueva camada tiene algunos buenos, pero abarcan tanto, que en poco tiempo ya no suenan bien. ya vendran buenos tiempos....

    I fully agree with you! Certainly no mezzo in the past 40 years can compare (with possible exception of Cossotto & Diminguez). "Freddie" certainly lets it all hang out! Ms. Blyth would have done herself a great favor by watching this video.

    @victorkievUA Agree with you, another two Giants in this performance are Gencer and Bastianini. Other parts are already uploaded by different users, but 'Stride la vampa' was not, so I could not miss this chance for enjoyment:)
