    The ASUS Zephyrus G15 is a thinner Ryzen based gaming laptop, but usually a smaller size results in higher temperatures and less performance, so let’s investigate in this review.

    I purchased this laptop in 2021 after watching so many reviews with this review included which is very informative and helpful. The laptop did get very hot and loud when under heavy load. The CPU temp was is the mid to high 90 degrees Celsius but the GPU stayed in the high 70s to low 80 degrees. Did some research and found two fixes online which claimed to solve the CPU high temps issue. One fix was to open the laptop and remove the metal covers that were blocking the two intake fans. I did this and the CPU still ran in the 90s. The other fix did the trick which was to uncover a hidden power setting by going into the registry editor. Once unlocked, the "processor performance boost mode" tab is available in the "power plan options" which is set to "Aggressive" by default. By disabling this or setting it to "Efficient Aggressive" drastically reduces the CPU temps. My frame rates in games went up by 10 percent while the CPU remain in the high 70s to low 80s and never reaching 90 degrees. I still have this laptop to this day and it works great. I do believe this can be done on any gaming laptop!

    • @kaishajacobye
      @kaishajacobye ปีที่แล้ว

      Honestly, this will mostly depend on luck by the manufacturer and oem, but high 70s-low 80s is still pretty bad for boost disabled. This was on turbo mode right? If so, you might as well open up the back cover and remove those pesky plastic films covering the vents. That should drop your CPU and GPU temps aswell to a good amount. If the temps are still about the same, then a repaste is definitely needed. You of course don’t have to do all of this, as it seems you are a casual user but if you are planning on keeping this for a while, this would definitely be recommended,

    I went with the M15 (when it was on Best Buy holiday sale) and I couldn't be happier. The 2070 is amazing (especially at this price point) and this has become a full desktop replacement for me (had to because literally my desktop died in a bad electrical surge.) The Thunderbolt support on the M15 is great, because I can always e-GPU this thing later on when the video card isn't up to snuff for future gaming. Also, I think the body design on the M15 is nicer (the prism effect is wonderful) and just overall.
    I am quite certain that I would have bought the M15 even at full price. I don't think you can get a nicer combination of specs and build/design in this price range. Yes there is plenty of competition from Lenovo, MSI, etc. for specs around this price point, but the design on all of them leaves something to be desired. They all have just something a bit to garish that sticks out like a sore gamers thumb. The Zephyrus 2020 models can become a full work/play replacement for anyone design wise in my opinion. Last thing I want to do is bring some "gamer" laptop into a meeting with staff or clients and have people point out how "strange" my laptop looks. The M15 can really "stealth" mode the business world (maybe less so with the G14 because it's so white, but the G15 could pass as "business" as well.)
    And man, the portability for a 15 inch laptop is unreal. Yes, you can go thinner and get a MacBook Pro, but then...you have a mac... I don't think anyone watching these videos is going to have a mac as their sole and primary computer (maybe a secondary machine if you're a baller) and also of course, gaming on a mac still blows (keep dreaming, right apple crew?) and also Apple needs to keep working on their thermals.
    To make a very overly long comment short. Get the M15 instead.

    i can see what they are doing with the airflow, but with how thin the laptop is, there will be a very limited amount of air that can be pushed through the space between the backplate and the motherboard. if the chassis was thicker I believe it might work. or even better, actually leaving vents underneath the fans so that they can take advantage of the airflow.

    Honestly I bought this laptop and this is what I have to say - they are bashing the 144hz display - it's a good display, not bad at all, they are bashing the speakers - they are actually good. The plastic body doesn't feel like plastic at all imo, really sturdy, pretty slick, beautiful laptop overall. Yeah the fingerprints are there , that's true. The keyboard is really good, the trackpad I actually amazing compared to like 90% of other gaming laptops, maybe Razer's trackpad is one of these superior ones, but I can't think of anything else ,maybe g14. So okay, performance is superb - Ryzen 9 and rtx 2060-max q - amazing combo brothers. I've tried everything to challenge this laptop - nothing did, I played Cyberpunk on maximum settings and got above 60 FPS. Thermals - it gets bashed and smashed about its thermals,buuuut - I disabled boost, used a cooling pad an viola - between 55 and 75 degrees. Nothing unfixable. This Is a great laptop. Everybody is praising the G14 which is literally the same shit, thermals - same problems, performance - same, display - for me it's the same,same goes for the speakers. I am saying this because I have tested and can play with a G14 too. It's not something I didn't double-check. And you are going to say the benchmarks show, bruhhhh believe me I raped this laptop and it performs amazingly under pressure. I just don't get why g15 is so underrated and all the reviewers are bashing it , while praising the G14, which performs comparable, but got this basically useless second screen and it's made out of aluminium alloy,which I aggree- it's nice, but g15 deserves more acknowledgment - it's an amazing laptop. I was wondering should I just buy the g14, just as my brother did but I just said fuck it and bought g15 -i adore it. Honestly I would throw my msi leopard out if the window for this laptop.

    • @RandomGuyComments
      @RandomGuyComments 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I was REALLY hesitating on buying this bc of thermals but that's a thing with laptops and your comment destroyed my hesitation and gave me confidence. I would just have to figure out how to disable boost. I like the Cooler Master Notepal X-Slim, hopefully it would compare similar to yours. I was seeing so many reviews against the G15, but a few still for it, I was put off until I read your comment. Right now at this moment I'm rocking a Asus G15DH RoG Strix tower, with Ryzen 5 3600x, RTX 2060 Super 8gb, 32GB ram (came with 1 stick of 16), 512 SSD Boot, 1TB Games. Honestly though when comparing my PC to this, the screen blows my 75hz acer out the window. The CPU's go head to head, blow per blow, the laptop CPU actually stacks up really well against my desktop and even out performs it in Octa core, when looking at the userbenchmark website. GPU, well the laptop version will always be weaker than the desktop BUTTTT this RTX 2060 mobile rocks and out does any AAA title. Linus showed that the GTX 1060 is the most common card used, devs and Steam wants people to buy games and not everyone has a great gpu. Battlefield 2042 recommended specs are weak af, so yeah this RTX 2060 will blow anything out of the water, I don't need my RTX 2060 Super OC and I super don't need a 30 series card. I don't NEED 32 gb of ram, just wanted to get dual channel in my rig. The reason I'm going from desktop to laptop is because when I can customize something (like my 2016 Yamaha R6), I won't stop, even if my money is limited. I'll buy every damn mod, look up every damn mod I can, for hours on end. With a laptop, it's all set and I can just get on with my life. Also it would be nice to game somewhere else than my office, like the couch where my family might see me more often and at buddies places now that covid is less strict. Sure I can't upgrade it much compared to the PC but honestly, I'd spend $1500 in 4 years on all tower upgrades anyways. Sorry for my long comment. We're alike boss! Which cooling pad do you have? 38977255 is my Steam friend code. Honestly not many ppl will make it to the bottom of this novel so I'm not worried lol.

For a long time....all while knowing its the inherent future of gaming laptops in this next 5 year window. Looking forward to reviews if they come out of the woodwork pre 2/15. My 5900x is already hard to get a temp reading outside of ryzen master...So idk if i can trust w.e BS suite ASUS offers for "VIABLE" cooling readings/fan curves/ and "profiles" as far as power output and cooling etc. A decent 1440p Panel really helped sweeten the deal Not going to lie. From a 120hz panel on the fx505 and my MSI.....which was like an instant FHD G-sync monitor purchase(just like the G14 KEK)....The price difference of buying up into a Helios 300...which was essentially the choice....a helios 300 or a "budget" option +monitor. Considering the tariffs on the now insanely priced 3080 which i was trying to hunt/trade into....the problem of gaming on 60fps 4k will not be solved...which is why i never got a 4k display to start with. The 3070 should be perfect for the 1440p panel and my 1440p ultrawide monitor. I REALLY hope it can cool im guessing it will be a 115w max 3070 if not

    Hey Jarrod, did you try to disable CPU boost or switch it to "aggressive efficient" which allows boost only when CPU load reaches 60%? The CPU is bottle necked by the GPU, and it seems when the GPU load reaches 100% the cpu tries to push further. when you disable the boost or turn it to aggressive efficient you get a drop of 20-25°C. I have the G14 and I used to have ~95°C CPU temp while gaming. Now, I get a max of 68-69 °C after 2h of Apex legends. Disabling the boost also causes the fan noise to drop since the components do not run that hot anymore.

    Have you tried disabling the boost like most of the G14/G15 subreddit community recommends? That's what I've done on my G15 and though I haven't benchmarked anything frame rates feel decent enough in Silent Mode with low fan noise and temperatures closer to the 70s. I haven't seen the GPU clock speed capped to 300 on Silent like you did once I disabled boost either.

      I definitely wish I'd have bought a different vendor than Asus, but I have to admit the FN+Fan hotkey for easily changing speed modes is incredibly convenient. Does every gaming laptop have an easy shortcut to change performance modes? Asus G15 has Silent>Performance>Turbo but I always just use silent, the lower FPS does suck hard though.

    Great Video Jarred! Quick question, would you consider this over the Razer Blade 15 2021 3070rtx? I know it is a bit morr expensive but that it isn't a problem personally. My biggest concern is overall reliability because there is not Zero support from Asus and Razer in my country. Basically, someone is buying the laptop from USA and bring it to my country. So, I won't be able to return it neither. I am looking for a very solid and reliable gaming laptop mostly for work and some single player gaming like GTA V and maybe Cyberpunk. I would really appreciate your opinion. Thank you

This is why Asus continues to be the most profitable gaming laptop manufacturer, their supply is amazing. It’s a virtuous cycle really.

      IMO its for FPS shooters competitive ones where youre hitting 240fps/240hz etc(typically not even using max settings) like in the new g15....If you play any AAA title where youre FPS is 60-120 or so typically....(in laptops even less than 120fps avg) for AAA games.....youll notice overshoot/ghosting/antighosting/halos etc....so youd want to turn it off and run a 6-10ms or w.e and it wont be TERRIBLE....trust me it will look awful in any immersive game like FC5, red dead etc....foliage will be intertwined due to the overdrive this is more or less common knowledge....still nice we can enable/disable it etc...vs past eras where some of these aspects were locked features....it can also be just downright epic fail if the low 3ms or etc is only common near the crosshair/center of the monitor with the corners or edges suffering from adequate backlight capabillity which leads to equally bad times where edges are rendered at 5-12ms....and the center is 3ms...

      I guess I didn't test with and without so I can't technically say, and ASUS are standing by this way apparently being better.

      Theoretically the Zephyrus G15 should be faster than the Zephyrus G14 since it has a larger cooler.
