- Today we take a typical ride on a Redditch bus on the 48 from Webheath into town. It is typical of a Redditch vehicle because they all break down. The driver said there was an issue with the bus and was told to take it out. No wonder why bus driving is stressful. Most of the drivers are sent out on faulty buses, and this driver is actually a decent guy (both in his driving and that he is nice to passengers). He ditched it at the bottom of the bus station and got a Solo instead, as they finally had a spare bus become available. How half of the buses that are in their fleet get onto the road legally is beyond me. Credit to the driver for keeping his cool with the horrible Dart. The Dart was new in September 2002 to Pete's Travel, West Bromwich. It has also spent time with Yourbus (Dunn Motor Traction), as their 1005. Thanks for taking the time to watch. This brings back memories of school when we’d get these on the run occasionally. Then there were older J reg darts that were utterly gutless and could barely get up hill. Not as fucked as this though!

Spent more time in the workshop than earning there keep.
It wants to be a hybrid when the engine but out when it stops. Lol
My earliest memory of these buses in London is when one of them stalled at the top of a tiny hill, then gently rolled down to the bus stop.
Looking at all these videos I guess stalling was more of a problem with these buses than I realized
If it's not passengers it's buses that push drivers to the limit.

In skegness there's still 2 in ordinary operation and they're still used as driver training buses
come down to stagecoach west, we have plenty of them! as they replaced the solos we had (for a short period of time)
There's still a few in use here in Hertfordshire, the 6 and 11 routes in Stevenage use a couple
There is 4 in Worcestershire All operated with LMS Travel. But 1 has gone I think

The Dart was doing an impression of an old British car trying to start from cold when the starter solenoid disengaged from the flywheel.
Michael David no the solenoid doesn't start it the starter gear does it looks like the gear from the clutch on a chainsaw. All the solenoid does is to either cut or open electricity to the motor.

Ngl that sounds scary that noiseit sometimes made starting up. I would have ditched that bus first chance no matter how nice the driver was lol. Feel sorry for the guy :(
ALX400 Bus Train and Aviation, But is it really scary starting up that’s the main question? And I do feel sorry for the nice guy as well. I would give him lots of money & he’ll deserve something nice, even though it’s a stressful job being a bus driver 😥.

In Hungary, our BKV (Budapest's foreign Transportation Company) has a lot of Ikarus 405 (midi), 415 (solo 12m) and 435 (articulated 18m) diesel buses. They started to take them out of service, while their engines are working very vell. (The 405 series sometimes had some starting problems, but another Ikarus 405 could solve the problem.. So the importance is on that those old Ikarus buses, especially the older 200 series are working better than the 400 series, and also better than Dennis buses...
I catch the 226 nearly everyday and the bus I had a couple days ago had the same problem

given that i spent near enough all my childhood riding around in them as the main operator at the time had loads of these to me it sounds like there is something wrong with the gearbox or the clutch cos the engine sounds fine.
Love to see the defect list the driver left for the mechanics.
not surprised that it broke down because if a bus looks as bad as that with basically all of the grab poles having all of the paint chipped off

There's several things wrong with this poor thing
the starter struggles engaging/disengaging the gearbox is struggling in pretty much all operation, the engine is starved of fuel

I personally dislike Euro 3 Darts because of this, always breaking down. When my local Route 130 in London had them they would never start after the driver change at Addington Village.
Euro 3 Dart aren't bad buses at all. They just need proper maintenance like any other bus.
Probably an EGR that make this thing breakdown a lot those stupid emission controls they put on this thing since Euro 3 did nothing but make engine less reliable and simply more rubbish
ex-Pete's Travel, says it all. Mid Wales Travel once bought (for some reason) an ex-Pete's Travel Dart. T547HNH. Was a dodgy shed with a top speed of about 20mph and half the windows had been replaced with un-openable ones...

Can't really comment on any other company apart from the Stagecoach, because I've never been on a bus with any of the others. Stagecoach however - only one man and his sheer greed for money and corporate dominance is to blame for the way the company is going or behaving...Brian Soutar! He's the founder and chairman of Stagecoach, living the rich life while his poor workers (or should that be slaves?) are working long hours, little breaks and on low pay, the fleet in every part of the UK is not getting the funding from him that they deserve, to expand and serve the public in the way it should. The technical/mechanical arm is not as high a standard as it should be, not to mention that depots are closing nationwide and fares are on the rise!
KillieKingdom, I live in Hastings & on Thursday when I was going to work on route 101 to Rye, I caught an old shabby Dart that was working fine until we got to Fairlight Village Commanders Walk & then the bus broke down. The Driver said this: Guys, If I can’t get the bus to start, Then you’ll have to catch the next bus. But he got it going again thankfully, all thanks to Stagecoach. And we was 3 mins behind schedule, but I don’t give a fuck about that at all. The driver also said that he accidentally stalled it. But now everything’s going good in the hood.
Not all darts are poorly maintained. Thamesdown (now called Swindons bus company)used to have alot of Dennis Darts, most are voith ones (they are all withdrawn) those darts were maintained well. Stagecoach and Lothian darts have good quality, not poor at all.
Badly maintained dart should take it back to the depot and also look at the bars absolutely horrible the purple paint is coming off

Makes me glad Go North East got rid of the majority of (if not all of) their Darts/Pointers, they used them primarily on the Venture routes, and god I hated those buses, tired, worn out, rusting away (to the point one even broke its' passenger door hinge so only one side opened mid-route!!), doors failing to work, thank goodness for the Optare Solos and Versas they acquired to replace them, so much nicer, despite having basically the same drivetrains.... :)
Some older Darts can be alright, if they're looked after. In other words the complete opposite of this
I remember when the Dart was a new thing, not long after Arriva North East took over the United buses here in County Durham in the late 90s, they were introduced (as the Plaxton Pointer) to replace the ageing stock of Leyland Nationals, and they were quite the novelty, such a low floor, the windows didn't leak like sieves, and were "quiet" (In comparison to a National), but not long after that, they started going wrong, and hilariously, Arriva repainted some of their remaining stock of Nationals into their liveries to temporarily replace the conked out Darts while in for repairs!! :P
Since then, I've never really had any soft-spot for the Darts, one bus I do miss though are the MCW/Optare MetroRiders, noisy, but nippy... :)

This is an example why First Midland Red Did not keep their 3 Remaining Dennis Darts because they were worried they would fail to because to me there was no point of Keeping them. But I wish they would keep them for longer. They even got rid of their only Dennis Dar MPD (Mini Pointer 2 Dart) 42876 which I think also had some trouble.
They simply are pieces of shit…. TH-cam is full with breakdowns of them

thank goodness this is in the UK, if it was in America the passengers would complain and the driver would've abused the bus more harshly to get it going and instead making the problem worse

In Canada (dunno about the other provinces) in the province of British Columbia, the bus would be immediately taken out of service and a replacement coach called for.

Why is it always mainly old people who travel on buses?
Because alot of them stop driving and some places they want to get to are too far for them to go. So that's why they go on buses mostly.
I used have theses buses were I live until they got replaced with low emissions ones

That did not sound good at around 2:25 there. This Dart reminds me of the Arriva one on TH-cam (X or Y-reg Mini Pointer Dart) that just couldn't make its mind up.

Starter motor would not enguage corrrectly then it sounded like the engine was forced to stall out as the gear wouldn't release. Got more than the one problem with that vehicle.
