As always, excellent review, Christopher. I’ve had two copies of this lens. One excellent copy that was sharp at all focal lengths and all apertures and another copy that was unusable beyond 110mm without stopping down to f4.0 and not totally sharp until f5.6. My first copy also had bad lens creep, while my more recent/better copy does not. So do not hesitate to send the lens back for exchange or refund if your copy is of unsatisfactory sharpness, because there are some excellent copies out there. I will note that this lens doesn’t seem to get all the way out to 35mm, probably more like 37-38mm. It is very slightly narrower than the Samyang 35mm f2.8. This truly is an all-in-one lens for event photography or out and about portraiture. My only complaint is that it is a heavy lens, particularly on the small A7iii body, but certainly lighter than the traditional 70-200 f2.8 lenses. I'm not sure I would use it for travel, but I get by just fine with my Sony 28mm f2 and the wide angle adapter.
I’d also like to find a tripod collar if anyone has any suggestions!
My copy was a bit soft at 150mm f2.8 but I used the little dock to alter the back focus slightly and it’s now nearly perfect.
I also just got my copy yesterday, tried it out today. Ghosting does exist at the 150mm mark f2.8. I have yet to adjust back focus or any of the parameters for lack of understanding what they do. I guess i shall tinker with that tmr!
Samyang/Rokinon does vary from copy to copy by quite a lot. I got the 135mm F1.8 Rokinon and my first copy (new from Amazon) had terrible astigmatism so I returned it. Bought a 2nd copy directly from Rokinon and the 2nd copy is incredibly sharp with no astigmatism. So surprised how in 2023 there's still such lens variation.
@@matttelz6014 my first copy of the Samyang 24mm f/1.8 wasn't good. Got a second copy which I now consider a master piece of a lens. As long as you have a way to take it back it was absolutely worth the minor hassle.
On what camera?
@@Herobox-ju4zd on the Sony a7ii. Pro photographer's noted it was a de-centered copy. My Samyang 18mm f/2.8, Samyang 12mm f/2.0, Samyang 85mm f/1.4 all worked beautifully on my A7ii. In recent years Samyang has put in excellent craftsmanship with occasional bad copies.
Thanks for all your great lens tests so far!
Looking pretty good for the price! A quick tip, but I picked the Tamron up for about the same price (USD $1300) in Tokyo from Yodobashi Camera due to the weak Yen and no tax. It came with an international warranty as well. I love the focal length as it's super versatile and it gives me a good workout 💪 Japan is the camera lover's heaven
Did the same thing. I ran out of time waiting for a solid comparison video and just went with my trust of the Tamron brand... but I would've loved to have had this video beforehand.
Finally.... I've been waiting for this review for a long time. Glad you got around to it. Good info.
7:00 - wow, that minidisc is a blast from the past!
Finally your review of this lens! Im glad you like it also, I seitched to sony not long ago and this is my only lens for the moment. I love it
I finally see this review that I've been waiting for a long time. I have this lens that I use for weddings on a sony a7iii and it very rarely has problems with focusing. The only problem that annoys me a little is leans flare when I shoot outdoors with the sun behind subject, but otherwise I find the lens to be extraordinarily good
you use for video or photo?
@@HristosInAfrica photo
@@HristosInAfrica Sorry for replying late. I use the lens for photos. Honestly, I had some problems with focus when I tried to film. But when I shoot photos everything is fine.
What an amazing lens! Excited for it coming to the L-Mount now!
Saw an article and ran here to watch this review 😹😹 this will be ideal for my S5IIX on weddings
Thanks for this review. Been waiting for a long time for you to get your hands on it.
Any chance you could make a side by side comparison using your old footage from testing the tamron? I know you dont have them both anymore. But I miss the style you used to do with e.g. the super zooms and quite recently the 150-600 lenses, where you go through side by side comparisons.
Anyway, amazing job as usual!
Finally... thanks for review
really love your reviews! :)
I've seen a few people have had their Samyang 35-150 lens break off at the mount. It's the same issue they had with the 24-70. It's like their mount isn't strong enough to support the weight of the lens. And they waited to send you a copy because they know you're one of the best and honest reviewers out there, and they needed to wait to update the AF firmware because before it was completely unusable in video mode. The firmware made it a lot better, but still not quite as good as the Tamron.
Interesting. I sure hope the 135 mm doesn't have the same issues with the mount. I think also the reason why they took long to send him a copy to review because they were cherry-picking him a good copy. I wouldn't be surprised if they also tweaked it with the dock as well. In this case, I'll likely go with the Tamron version. Since their AF motors are the best out of any other 3rd party manufacturer.
@@princeharbinger Sony owns Stock in Tamron, so they want them to succeed, and very possibly might share some code/secrets with Tamron to get their lenses working better than other 3rd party options. This is just a conspiracy, but you never know lol
Lies Samsung is the best
I have this lens and it is absolutely amazing--way better than I ever imagined!!!
I have this lens and it quickly became one of my favorites. What is also important in comparison to the Tamron, that the Samyang lens has linear focusing, which is a must for videography. For some unknown reason, many Tamron, Sigma and Sony lenses don't have a linear MF response, which is a shame.
You can use USB to setup tamron lens for lineare MF!
@@PatriceSavoieI didn’t know about that option. And is the Tamron parfocal (=keeps the same focusing distance while zooming)? The Samyang is not unfortunatelly.
@@radimpalussamyang is not technically parfocal. It just dial the focus with the zoom. I thought it was at first to.
@@yuizenThat is what I was writing-that it is NOT parfocal.
We need this for fuji
Redesigning it as 23-80mm f2-2.8 or similar would be better. Using it as is on a crop sensor camera would make it a slightly wider 50-140
@@zetknight we need a 50-140 competitor also
I agree, this lens on my XH2 would be amazing although the new Tamron 70-180 2.8 would be ideal as my tele option, lighter and cheaper , better match for the lighter APS-C bodies
What we need is a cheaper 2.8 - 4.0 version with the same optical sharpness for hobby enthusiasts. Tamron used to make one for Nikon DSLRs.
That could perhaps even manage to fit into their usual "cheap", all 67 mm filter size lens line-up too.
@@Wistbacka 2-2.8 version is more usable for the indoors events I shoot. If they can make a cheaper version a straight f4 I would buy
Many thanks for this review
I have this for wedding photography and really enjoy it. Can just run with the one lens and it gets good shots for me in most conditions.
The internet had been waiting for this comparison from a reputable reviewer like yourself 👏
Great vid just bought it
i pre-ordered this lens and have had it for a few months now. The only drawback is the autofocus. it’s hit & miss at static objects and worse tracking objects moving toward the camera. i bought the dock adapter for it and hoping they update the lens to improve it’s autofocus performance. aside from that, i love the images i get from it. so much so, I sold my sigma 24-70 2.8 and use this instead.
autofocus is still bad with firmware v2?
Is the autofocus good now
AF has been very good on my a7IV and a7RV in low light with slow-moving subjects. I keep firmware up to date on my nine Samyang lenses.
Thanks so much for doing these reviews . Just picked this lens up for £879 on amazon Black Friday!!! Bargain! Hope it’s as good as it seems
thanks for great sharing
Thanks for checking the parfocality❤
The UBS 5? Love it!
Finally...i asked about this months ago ❤
Had mine for about 6 months now and have used it on many event jobs. I had kind of forgotten how sharp it was until last night when I was editing a job and was impressed with the detail and contrast of a candid portrait made at 82mm and f2.8 at low ISO. "Wow," I thought. "This thing is better than I realized". A lot of my work is at very high ISO, so I was used to seeing images with less detail.
The one weakness I've noted is veiling flare with large areas of strong backlight, such as a person indoors with a large window behind them. It's pretty bad. Folks have said the same of the Tamron. But, this doesn't seem an issue with venue lighting.
One other thing that struck me last night was the weight. Now, I don't feel that the lens is burdensome, even when I use it all day, but when I swapped it for a small prime, suddenly the camera felt featherweight, even with a battery grip on it. Made me think again about getting a third body and shooting more with three primes, which is how I worked for years before getting this zoom.
That Leftfield album is a banger!
Hahaa. I had been hoping that you will do a review on this one. I have the Tamron version that you contributed a lot in my decision making
I would never trade the Tamron version but glad there's another option
I bought the samyang 24-70, also advertised as par focal, which it wasn't. My "issue" with the Samnyang zoom lenses is the weight and the image quality that gets normal really between f/5.6 and f/8. Centre softness at max zoom seems to be the same as with 24-70mm . That said, pricing is very competitive, but I prefer their primes.
The Samyang 24-70 zoom seems like based on Canon's EF24-70L mk2. But you are right, for this price it's acceptable
Do you think this would be a good lens to use for indoor sports?
An excellent result from the Samyang. Let's hope they can maintain performance and quality across copies. I did like how you repeatedly said, "forced to shoot a wedding" 😂
I shot one wedding for a friend, never again. Ever wonder where these camera reviewers get their money? Weddings.
A true "all the money in the world" situation
I really hope this comes to Z mount as I think it's a better more versatile focal range option than the 70-180 2.8
There's a little insect on the test chart around 5:34, giving a bit of an impromptu demonstration of the jump in sharpness when going from f/4 to f/5.6!
Finally!❤
I've heard the AF is better when updated, do you know if it's the latest firmware?
I'm wondering, isn't it time to switch to the 61MPix sensor for testing purposes? Many lenses nowadays outperform the A7RIII sensor.
We need this for canon
we need this lens for canon rf mount!!!
Current on sale for $899 for BF, incredible value !!!
What happened to the tamron 11-20 video test on fuji's 40 mpx sensor?
The Idea for this zoom range comes from the 24-100mm when paired with cropsensor... The lens made the inverse movement.
Got the features and "specs" of super high end native lenses, G master, L, etc. but lacks the "refined" and final polish of those said lenses. If Canon for example could make an L mount lens like this it would be one lens to rule them all. But yeah the price would also be one to rule them all.
3:15 is your crystal pepsi falling apart? Seems to be a weird shape as if a huge pressure change happened to it
Hi, did anybody encounter a problem with the zoom ring? Mine is rolling by itself while positioning the camera downwards.
Always fantastic reviews of lens! Please do one for the upcoming G2 Tamron 70-180 2.8 VC
Do you happen to recall whether the Tamron's bokeh was as creamy as the Samyang's, which looks superb. Thank you.
Id love yo trust this lens but after i saw so many of their 24-70 lenses breaking at the mount, ive because weary of their build quality for zooms. I love their primes but for instance im gonna save up for the tamron
Even the bug on the chart looks spectacularly at 150mm f/5.6 (5:36)
B&H had a daily deal for 40% off yesterday with free one day shipping! Just got mine but no cool rear cap - standard Samyang rear cap.
Would be great if you get a copy of the Tamron 35-150 for Z mount. I’m guessing it would be the same as the Sony version but it would be more reassuring if you get to review it on a Z body to see if anything was compromised.
Can we please get one of these lenses on canon???
Great review. Anyone noticed that this lens doesn't have a tripod support and it's pretty heavy? I've bought one and I really like it but do anyone knows if I can use this lens with my body (for me specifically it's sony A7M3) and it won't break the E-Mount when holding using body, attach to tripod or hanging on various strips, slides etc. ? I didn't found spec what max weight body with E-Mount can support :)
please compare Canon RF 85mm f/1.2L USM DS vs Sony FE 100mm f/2.8 STF GM OSS. Both are apd lens.
I would love this lens at f4.0 with IS. And of course RF mount. But I won't get my hopes up. 35-150 is a great lens range. I would likely buy this if it comes out in RF mount as is though.
Canon won't let Samyang and Tamron into the party.
Hmm, the autofocus performance seemed pretty awful compared to other Sony lenses that have come out recently. I guess you get what you pay for. Very lucky to have reviews like yours available for mid-priced lenses like this, so that people can see where the lens falls short compared to the expensive yet flawless lenses of the world :)
P.S. The text transition at 7:55 happens slightly too quickly 🙃
Nice review Christopher! My biggest gripe between the Samyang and Tamron 35-150 lenses, is the fact I can't find a lens collar for the Samyang. I'd happily save about €500 and go with the Samyang, but since i'll be doing a lot of tripod work and don't want to stress the camera's mount too much, i'd like my setup to be more balanced. Only the Tamron seems to have custom made tripod collars available....what are your thoughts on using either lense without the tripod collar? Cheers!
It’s not needed you are worrying about a problem that doesn’t exist.
I have this lens, my Par-focal works good. But I've upgraded the firmware.
Does Samyang specifies at which aperture the lens is parfocal? I mean at f22 near every zoom is parfocal 😅
I'm a little confused about the parfocal aspect of the lens.. I've watched other reviews of the lens and they were parfocal... Is this possibly just the copy you have ( as seems it seems to be with some other issue) ?
Howdy doodee Christopher
Hopefully it comes to L-mount!
hey ! do you own it ? i need it for events , weddings , birthdays , but i am scared about how much it lasts . i take a very good care of my lenses , i do not hit them , drop them . still ... in a review madebyf a famous localy store F64 , they claimed this lasts 2 years full of events . so can you tell me , pls ?i cannot afford to change the lense every 3 years . i have a sony A7- 4
hope u make review 35-150 2.8-4 on nikon. it only 500 usd for used now
Honestly the weddings I've shot I can get all the shots I need with a 28-70 if not just a 50mm, I don't need the extra reach of this lens so I can do without the extra weight. Each to their own!
I love the Tamron lens so I was excited to see how this Samyang/Rokinon will compare. Tamron is still the choice for me but I'm happy to see the Samyang does super well! Especially as the Samyang will be on the L Mount supposedly
I would never completely trade the wide end "24-34mm" even for getting longer focal. Just the 24-70 to 28-75mm was unacceptable to me so no way I would go from a minimum of 24mm to 35mm!
QUESTION: The lens stays at F2.0 until what focal as I bet it quickly drops to F2.8 in a way that in reality we could just call this lens a "F2.8 lens" but they put the F2 for marketing purpose, but we shouldn't expect it to act like a (Canon 28-70 F2.0).
Actually it drops pretty long way, it starts at 2.8 at 85mm. 55mm f2.5. So, it's not marketing, although it's not f2 until 70mm for example! It's also not trying to replace a 24-70mm, but if you use a fixed lens like an 35mm of a 50mm, in can replace them. Strategy's wise although, is to pair this lens with 16-35mm f2.8 from Tamron, and you really only need 2 lens until 150mm. Pretty neat on my book.
Is Samyang making a Z mount version of this lens?
Wish it had internal zoom with no barrel extension.
Looks like a great lens. Its kinda ugly with the two different grips. I would have preferred the focus and zoom grips be the same look.
this lens is a beast and the best! but there is shortage of it
Would love this in L mount
Cheers m8 :D
Since Samyang is “coping” , samyang please do a 28-200 2.8-5.6 but with OSS😊
❤❤❤❤❤
5:37 a mosquito appears suddenly 😮
Imagine this for GFX
QUESTION: Some say the Samyang is not actually 35mm - more like 38-39mm - could you measure that? (btw great review as always)
It is roughly 38-39mm, about the same as the Samyang 35mm f2.8 pancake prime. Much narrower than the 35mm on the Sony Rx1, which is more like 32mm.
I just receive the lens. Great optics. Heavy as F.
I need this lens for mft.
L mount when 😮
what was that intro LMAO
Holy hell. Only lens most people will ever need. P.s. and of course.... it is not available for Nikon Z.
But the Tamron version of it!
@@Arclite2k3 This one is like 2/3rd the price. In my city at least. But yeah, I know the Tamron one is available for Nikon Z,
A real fulltime wedding photographer here. Yes, this lens is excellent for wedding photography ON PAPER. However, you really need a 24mm. So if you can only have one lens for wedding, you HAVE TO use a 24-70 f2.8 Period.
People are arguing that is the "one lens to rule them all" lens when the tamron one releases but these ppl are "influencers" who "think" it will work that way, not actually shooting weddings for living. I hope you don't be that guy cuz I really like your previous reviews.
24mm for wedding is a must, you could live with 35mm so so... But this seems to be more like 38mm wich is really not that great anymore...
This zoom range in old film day would consider a standard zoom lens But now standard zoom lens get wider and wider. And a lens start at 35mm become unqiue now. And it is also a lot useful than 70-200 on crop sensor. So I would like companies make more zoom lens start from 35mm.
Tamron for the win. Sharp fast accurate focus at the long end with VC. I’m not buying a lens like this for the short end.
Tamron 35-150 don't have VC man
canon take notes
Crying persists here in Canon land
Pity there's no Canon version...
Nikon user however, don't even have a choice 😢
Of course we have - ETZ adapter + Tamron or Samyang or native Tamron.
The Tamron is way better
Why’s that lmao!?
not angry just disppointed
At my place the price Tamron lens is $100 higher than Samyang so no one buy this lens 😂😂😂
I don’t trust this brand🤷🏿🤷♂️🤷♂️🤷🏿♀️
Am I the only one that would never use this lens as wedding one simply because the wide range ?! 😅 2.8 is too slow/dark for event like that... nothing slower than 1.4 for weddings 🤷
If you prefer speed over versatility, than that's fine. There's plenty of other wedding photographers who have been using zooms for decades just fine. The day they do make some fast zooms will be very interesting but likely very expensive and heavy.
What primes do you like using for weddings?
If you have 2 cameras then it's fine to use prime lenses but if you have only one camera, zoom lenses are your best friends.
I love using three bodies with primes, but I also use this lens a lot when it's not pitch dark. I covered a well-lit corporate event (mostly grip & grins and candids) last night, and the ability to do a 3-person group shot up-close, then pivot and photograph someone conversing on the other side of the room was really handy. Once I had all my bases covered, I swapped this and my 17-28 for 24/1.8 and 75/1.8 primes on my two cameras for some shallow-DoF shots. And, yes, in dark venues I use 35/1.4 and 85/1.4 primes a lot. Also, this zoom is really handy for following a bride and groom around outdoors.
I bought this zoom because I once got caught out without enough reach. Had 24/35/85 on three cameras, needed more, and my 135 was 50 feet away in my bag when the action started unexpectedly. This lens takes care of that. My alternative solution is now to carry the 135 in a pouch on a utility belt. Gotta have a Plan B.

meh the Samyang is literally akin to a cheap Chinese knockoff of the Tamron 35-150
Samyang is Korean. My Sony 24-105/4 was built in Thailand. My Tamron 70-300 was built in China, and my Tamron 17-28/2.8 was built in Vietnam.
