To anyone who is thinking of the thermal pad sizes, I'm just doing this now on my Rx5700XT Gaming OC 8GB (Rev 1). VRM (MOSFET and Inductors) = 1.5mm, Memory = 0.5mm and backplate is 3mm. I measured everything myself. If you go lower/higher on any of them, your thermals will go through the roof! Anything lower won't touch the heatsink or/and backplate. Anything higher, will make the GPU die not contact the heatsink well. Hope this helps someone. As these GELID pads are bloody expensive.

All ranging from artifcating to black screens on multiple monitors, blue screen, game crashes, fps drops, discord using 99% of the gpu while gaming, and so on. Tried different drivers, reinstalling windows and a bunch of other things. Don't know if its the card thats the issue (or something not working well with the card), but it all happend after i installed it.
@@theroflcopterguy7128 Sorry to hear about that. I have an XFX reference card that I put an EK waterblock on. My experience has been good. Have you tried disconnecting the additional monitors? I'm using Driver 19.9.1 with a Samsung CFG73 monitor. If you are getting a lot of artifacting you might have a bad card.

You can actually unscrew memory plate it is not soldered! Its just screwed metal plate on cold plate. I did apply thermalpaste between them and thermals droped from 88C to 70C on memory.
i did 3mm backplate, 1mm for vrm mosfets and .5mm for memory. And repasted. while mining at full power its only getting to 59 max on core and 90 max on memory/junction. The biggest difference you can make for better temps is taking the card off default fan settings, your fans stay low rpm even when memory /junction is at 104. Changing your fan settings will save you 5 degrees on core and 10-15 on memory/jucntion temp. Turning default fan setting off and doing custom fan setting is what will save most of you. You can do that with amd adrenalin or with msi afterburner.
Thank you @dillon4813 I'm recently seeing elevated hotspot temps so I'm about to tear mine down and repaste ( the last of my KPx). I have sheets of Kritical 0.5mm and 2.5mm, while not ideal I may have to double stack to get the 1.0mm and 3.0mm you've noted.
I recently replaced the existing thermal paste in my MSI 5700XT MECH OC with Thermal Grizzly Conductonaut. There was a significant thermal improvement. Without any overclock, the Junction Temp at idle dropped from 33 to 26. The Current Temperature (using the terminology found in the Radeon Software) dropped from 28 to 26. The fact that the two are now the same is very telling. More importantly, prior to the change, I had a couple of games that routinely drove the Junction Temp to 112 (again, that is without any OC). Maybe not dangerous, but too high for my comfort. After adding the liquid metal the junction temp never goes over 80. My plan was to later add an AOI cooler to the GPU, but with the results I got from the change in thermal paste I have decided not to waste the money.
Funny you should say that, now that we’re in the middle of the pandemic several states in the USA are looking at introducing right to repair legislation.
With the launch of Starfield, I recently re did the thermal paste on this card. Used the noctua ceramic paste. I should have replaced the thermal pads, but didn't know the exact thickness. So I ended up reusing the existing thermal pads. But the results were amazing. Old paste looked decent enough, but I did notice some tiny gaps near the center of the chip. But what a world of difference, hot spot was hitting over 105 at points, with gpu temp in the high 70s low eighties. After : hot spot highesy temp 89, avg GPU temp is 68. Fantastic. If you have this old, but decent card, and you are having high/fluctuating temps, I would recommend repasting if you have the ability to do so. It's like I have a new card!
Hi I'm planning to re paste my Gigabyte Rx 5700 xt gaming oc just like in the video and I owned this card since 2019. I'm planning to use artic mx 6 for repasting the GPU is it really okey to not change the thermal pads? I'm quite anxious
@@aRTH_IAS it's good practice to replace them, but it's important to get the right thickness. I wasn't 100% sure, so I reused mine. Not too much of a pain, but you wanna be careful not to rip it and make sure it's got good contact on everything. I had 1 rip and one tear, lined them up as best I could and it's working fine. If I keep the card much longer, I will definitely do the pads.
Maybe one day amd will be confident enough about their products to actually meet demand? They've been selling out on launch since the 400 series but then keep producing old skus long past when they're in demand at reduced prices. If they didn't rush every launch they could probably get these out more reliably.
@@Ironclad17 Yeah the Radeon guys are pretty clumsy when it comes to launches. Not rushing would also mean actually functional drivers on launch. Pretty frustrating because these GPUs themselves are actually nice, but the launch BS is a pain in the butt.
cryohellinc I love it. Not a massive upgrade from 970s SLI but still a 20fps gain in most games. And I love the look of it. At stock settings the card gets to around 76c and stays quite. But with a more aggressive fan curve it stays under 60c; not too loud but that’s just an opinion.

There are quite a few comments asking for thermal pad thickness. I have this exact card model and have replaced almost all of the pads and repasted with NTH-2, so for what it's worth, here is what I've found: (all are thermal grizzly minus pad 8): 1mm on the 3 memory banks surrounding the GPU die. 1.5mm on the MOSFETS. 2mm on the inductors. Backplate thermal pads - my best guess is 3mm. I can only guess though because I have not replaced or even taken the backplate off. Just by eyeballing, they look like 2mm wouldn't be enough. I have some 3mm pad and by the look of things, it would bridge the gap, but 2mm wouldn't. I held the 3mm I had up to the card, but I couldn't place them side by side to visually compare or run my finger over the edges to compare if there was a lip I could feel or not.
Did replacing the pads on the VRAM help with temps? I have the same card. When I'm not gaming I mine ETH (power limited to 110w) and the GPU temps are all 40-50C except the VRAM hangs around 80-84C. I am wondering if redoing the vram thermal pads is worth it.
@@ndcoward I haven’t noticed massive drops, sorry for delay, I also mine when I’m not gaming, I use lolminer because it’s good with AMD cards and right now I’m averaging 51.3 mhs, making £2.50 a day for 80mm of energy. Especially over holidays when I’m away I just let it run. Merry Xmas.

Im on my 2nd sapphire nitro card (R9 390 and Vega 64). Sapphire do such an awesome job with their coolers. My vega 64 sits at 38% fans (1200rpm) under full load and I can't hear it at all.

I got a Gigabyte RX 5700 XT Gaming OC the other day, but the temps have me scratching my head. At stock I am hitting 84C core and 105C hot spot playing control in a well ventilated Air 540 case, the fans are at 46% with default curve in a 21C room. Idle temps, even if I manually change the curve so it is 30% fan at the lowest setting, idles at 45-46C. I ended up reseating the cooler with fresh paste, but temps stayed the same. I have to set the fans to at least 60% to have decent temps (75C core 95C hot spot) at stock clocks but it starts to get noisy at those speeds.
Yeah I've heard that the default fan curve is set too low, to keep it silent, but the temps go to 90s. Most of them had to set custom fan curve, and as you mentioned, needs 60-65% to get decent cooling. Just curious, are you happy with the purchase, and would you recommend this card? Because I'm considering either this, or the pulse which is slightly priced higher.
Well one of my gigabyte 980ti fans died 1 month out of warranty Asked their support if I could buy a replacement and basically got an automated response that my warranty was expired got a real support person which basically said the same thing Had to jank my way through until I found a replacement fan on aliexpress When u compare that to evga and my old 680 Where I got a free replacement for my fan out of warranty Or nzxt that sent me a free side panel after I asked whether I could buy one to mod / sent me a new front io pcb after someone tripped over an aux cord connected to it All outside warranty

You should start turning on the world to WOW sticks. You could brand a good one as your own. For unscrewing it is a must. I like the screwdriver kit, but I use electric for everything.
@@SISSYPUSS I have an 18v but I would never use it for Electronics. I have a 3.6v I use for computers for video cards you risk stripping screws with that much torque. That is why wow sticks are useful. Low torque.
Thank you for the awesome video Steve. Graphics cards are the core of our company (drafting) and I hope other viewers see why purchasing the right card the first time does makes a big difference. Buying a $300 dollar Evoke just to realize the thermal pads are skimped on makes us think of how they likely skimped on discrete and surface-mount components. Is it "good enough"? ...possibly - But if the Evoke card (or any card) fails due to thermal (incompetence), we wouldn't want to waste hard-earned cash on the same card again - so if we had bought the $500 Gigabyte board the first time, we wouldn't have had to spend $800 (total) just to have a functioning system - even more-so when you have to buy graphics cards in bulk like we do. This concept works with most electronics in the industry. It shows that one does "get what they pay for" by doing a little research first. :)
I guess the slightly higher junction temp could be a consequence of the direct touch heatpipes where the "groove" between two pipes cause less thermal efficacy than where the pipes lie horisontal to the 7nm die of the Navi chip?
Exactly what I was thinking when I watched the video too. When watching the actual card review it was puzzling why this card had such good edge temperatures but relatively higher junction temperatures. But after seeing the heatpipes with the big grooves between them it makes perfect sense. Prior to the 5700 series and the new junction temperature there was never a way to measure this before. Now it looks likes direct touch heatpipes do have a downside in terms of hotspots on the GPU die.
On the argument of flip-chips and cooling, i think a lot of people are leaving out that there's an entire pcb that the heat would have to pass through before reaching the pads. If is actually mattered, there would be vias specifically for heat dissipation, and considering nobody is designing cards like this, the thermal difference clearly doesn't matter enough for that design consideration. Basically the chips are designed to hot-box themselves with the pcb.
Am I the only viewer here who prefers to first see the tear-down and then the review? From the teardown we can conclude how well the card performs (temperature vs noise and noise and temperature vs. boost). I would like it if the teardown would be uploaded first if the videos are spread out for strategic (TH-cam algorithm) reasons.
I just my GBT 5700xt Gaming OC. Was anyone else missing all of the extras in the folder like box that came on top of the card? I seriously only got a user guide. Not that I was really caring, just caught me off guard.
i don't think the smoothness of the machining makes much difference if there's gaps between the heatpipes. i would have much rather have seen a metal plate soldered to the heatpipes. there's no heatspreader and then they manufactured a non uniform heatsink
@@heygek2769 realistically the two best coolers so far are both using plates though, the rog strix has a smooth polished plate and the red devil has a plate. good cpu coolers can got the direct contact route because there is an IHS acting as the plate. the gpu doesn't have anything to spread the heat over an area so those enormous coolers are being wasted if half of the heatpipes aren't in contact with the gpu
You can put small slabs of aluminium fin heatsinks. I use 2 and one small tower (North bridge cooler with direct touch heatpipe) on my rx 580. It doesn't really decrease any temps but I won't have artifacts at higher OCs. The pcb is cooler. Try some backplate modding :)

great video, but i have a question. How is the shroud and fans actually attached to the cooler? it looks like its just snapped onto it. would it be easy to remove without having to take apart the rest of the card?
is there a way to know the thermal pads thickness and the mosfait thermal pad thickness aswell, i searched the hole internet and could not find anything, i changed mines since they were totally gone, i placed 0.5mm for the Vrams and 1mm for the mosfait, but i have a problem with mounting pressure i think cause the temps now are totally garbage when i turn on the pc gpu temp is 55 degrees before it was around 45 and when i play junction temperature goes over 100 before it was never going over 90, i need some help with the original pad thickness plz

I'm more excited for the strix, gaming x, and especially the sapphire nitro as the high end sapphire cards usually OC better and have better coolers. (Every sapphire card I had has always surpassed OC expectations like my 1435mhz Rx 480 nitro with a crazy 2300mhz memory oc)
i have always taken the backplate of my cards off, and installed a fan, or two, that blows directly on to the pcb. it has allowed me to overclock the memory higher, every.. single.. time.
Truthfully, I expected much more a half-ass job from Gigabyte. For Polaris and Vega I noticed that both Gigabyte and MSI didn't put in their best effort: MSI which reused its GTX 1060 heatsink for the RX 480 resulting in a noisy and hot card, Gigabyte its Vega-cards which were unstable out of the box (hence being priced so much lower in many countries), MSI their original GamingX RX 580 being noisy and hot compared to the cards from Sapphire and Asus. But this card seems to be fine. I expect the ASRock 5700 XT to be better, I know that the Red Devil will be a lot better, depending on the price I will probably buy one of those. A Sapphire Nitro makes a chance too but with €480/490 for just the Sapphire Pulse (around €450 for the ASRock which I expect to perform better, it has thick copper pipes and comparable fins of the heatsink, as long as they didn't screw up with the thermal contact...) the prices would need to come down a lot!! To be clear, Gigabyte still seems to put in less effort for AMD than for Nvidia but not nearly as bad as MSI this time.
Hey, seems like these cards are a hit or miss. I already posted on reddit and there's been a couple of others with same issues, that goes for this Gigabyte Gaming OC rx 5700 xt model. During gaming my junction temperatures peak / stay at 109-113°C while other sensors report "normal values" and way lower than the junction temperature. In this one example - gpu/junction/mem/vrm (67°/113°/74°/67°C). Ambient temperature was 21-22°C and fan speed reached up to 2700RPM. I'm in the process of RMAing the card.
I have this exact gpu, now 2yrs later its running in the 110-113 junction/hot spot too, custom fans curve made it a lot better (90-100) but now its a bit noisy obviously. Gonna re-paste it soon and use K5-pro cuz no one really knows what is best pad thickness. That doesnt fix it I will slap on 2 noctua's to reduce noise! 😂👍
@@Timmitous The pads, no.. cuz its really difficult to find out which kinds of thickness have been used. Could easily be 3 different kinds, so I used a paste instead. In the end almost same price as 3 sheets of pads and its a perfect fix for not knowing the thickness u need, can recommend it! 👍🤓
With cards that seem to go over the 2 slot thickness, I'd like to know if the cooler will block using the slot below it, because occassionally they don't but eyeballing pictures is a crapshoot.
I just noticed The Backplate has Paint in-between the Metal and Thermal pads, Would it not be Better To Scuff off the Paint where the Pads go on the Backplate, for a Probably Far better Final Result Maybe ! Just Saying, !!! I may Try this When I get new Thermal Pads for the Swap..
So question. If one was adventurous enough to move the PCIe power to the side mount position, does the board have the required traces to allow for that? Not saying anyone should do that. Just wondering if its wired for it.

I've seen Buildzoid's commentary on the ASUS version of the RX 5700 XT and am interested in getting your input on that model, as well. He makes some pretty strong recommendations regarding its quality, which impressed me, as I was considering the purchase of a Sapphire Pulse; but, am angling toward the ASUS now. Thoughts?
He review PCB, which is incredible for HARDCORE OVERCLOCKING, but normal user couldn't give more fuck about it. Cooler itsels is on Pulse level. Strix is totally not worth money. Better buy Red Devil it's way better (cooler and quiter).
None of the Navi cards are overclockers so everything Asus threw in there is wasted. Go for a Red Devil or wait for the Nitro, much cheaper and similar performance.
I don't suppose you could make a video regarding the hotspot issue after repasting? I purchased a used card on ebay and it has a hotspot/junction temp 30+ degrees higher than edge temps. I tried repasting and I can't seem to correct it. Even tried using better thermal paste and swapped the cheap pads the seller used with some that were the proper sizes and the problem still persists. The card works otherwise and will even play games at those ridiculously high junction temps of 110+ but eventually it will power down the system for thermal protection. So I don't think the die is bad and the cooler appears to be fine. Any ideas?
My gigabyte 5700xt hits 110c on the junction temp at 1130v and stays around 100c at 1050v with lower clocks, i literally removed the card from it's place with a riser cable to check temps without other components close to it and they remain the same, i just removed the backplate and unlike yours mine has/had a square thermal pad for the chip. Gonna try now to see how the temps go without the backplate. Could this have been a reason?

Undervolt your card, it reduces temps alot without losing performance! 2000mhz 1116mv Vram 1848 Powerlimit set to max (mine is 50) Adjust fan curve/temp and test. These temps and fan speeds are most important 65c - 45%-47%( 2000rpm) 81c - 55% 58% (2200rpm) My card never reach 80c junction, mostly it sits at 70c.

guys does anyone know the brand of the original thermal pads used on this card, cause i tried changing mines with the reccomended ones but none worked soft/hard pads or thin/thickest nothing worked
That memory heat plate is not making any real contact (direct or indirect) with the fins. Why didn't you try unscrewing it for the audience like you did with MSI?
Actually, it is. It is conducting to the coldplate for the GPU, which conducts to the fins. Also, it has the best VRAM thermals out of all the cards anyway, so it obviously works well because of the airflow.

Did you measure the stock pads or did you measure the gap between the contacts?

i did 3mm backplate, 1mm for vrm mosfets and .5mm for memory. And repasted. while mining at full power its only getting to 59 max on core and 90 max on memory/junction.
The biggest difference you can make for better temps is taking the card off default fan settings, your fans stay low rpm even when memory /junction is at 104. Changing your fan settings will save you 5 degrees on core and 10-15 on memory/jucntion temp. Turning default fan setting off and doing custom fan setting is what will save most of you. You can do that with amd adrenalin or with msi afterburner.
Thank you @dillon4813 I'm recently seeing elevated hotspot temps so I'm about to tear mine down and repaste ( the last of my KPx). I have sheets of Kritical 0.5mm and 2.5mm, while not ideal I may have to double stack to get the 1.0mm and 3.0mm you've noted.
I recently replaced the existing thermal paste in my MSI 5700XT MECH OC with Thermal Grizzly Conductonaut. There was a significant thermal improvement. Without any overclock, the Junction Temp at idle dropped from 33 to 26. The Current Temperature (using the terminology found in the Radeon Software) dropped from 28 to 26. The fact that the two are now the same is very telling. More importantly, prior to the change, I had a couple of games that routinely drove the Junction Temp to 112 (again, that is without any OC). Maybe not dangerous, but too high for my comfort. After adding the liquid metal the junction temp never goes over 80. My plan was to later add an AOI cooler to the GPU, but with the results I got from the change in thermal paste I have decided not to waste the money.

With the launch of Starfield, I recently re did the thermal paste on this card. Used the noctua ceramic paste. I should have replaced the thermal pads, but didn't know the exact thickness. So I ended up reusing the existing thermal pads. But the results were amazing. Old paste looked decent enough, but I did notice some tiny gaps near the center of the chip. But what a world of difference, hot spot was hitting over 105 at points, with gpu temp in the high 70s low eighties. After : hot spot highesy temp 89, avg GPU temp is 68. Fantastic. If you have this old, but decent card, and you are having high/fluctuating temps, I would recommend repasting if you have the ability to do so. It's like I have a new card!

@@aRTH_IAS it's good practice to replace them, but it's important to get the right thickness. I wasn't 100% sure, so I reused mine. Not too much of a pain, but you wanna be careful not to rip it and make sure it's got good contact on everything. I had 1 rip and one tear, lined them up as best I could and it's working fine. If I keep the card much longer, I will definitely do the pads.

Maybe one day amd will be confident enough about their products to actually meet demand? They've been selling out on launch since the 400 series but then keep producing old skus long past when they're in demand at reduced prices. If they didn't rush every launch they could probably get these out more reliably.
@@Ironclad17 Yeah the Radeon guys are pretty clumsy when it comes to launches. Not rushing would also mean actually functional drivers on launch.
Pretty frustrating because these GPUs themselves are actually nice, but the launch BS is a pain in the butt.

cryohellinc I love it. Not a massive upgrade from 970s SLI but still a 20fps gain in most games. And I love the look of it. At stock settings the card gets to around 76c and stays quite. But with a more aggressive fan curve it stays under 60c; not too loud but that’s just an opinion.

There are quite a few comments asking for thermal pad thickness. I have this exact card model and have replaced almost all of the pads and repasted with NTH-2, so for what it's worth, here is what I've found: (all are thermal grizzly minus pad 8):
1mm on the 3 memory banks surrounding the GPU die.
1.5mm on the MOSFETS.
2mm on the inductors.
Backplate thermal pads - my best guess is 3mm. I can only guess though because I have not replaced or even taken the backplate off. Just by eyeballing, they look like 2mm wouldn't be enough. I have some 3mm pad and by the look of things, it would bridge the gap, but 2mm wouldn't. I held the 3mm I had up to the card, but I couldn't place them side by side to visually compare or run my finger over the edges to compare if there was a lip I could feel or not.
Did replacing the pads on the VRAM help with temps? I have the same card. When I'm not gaming I mine ETH (power limited to 110w) and the GPU temps are all 40-50C except the VRAM hangs around 80-84C. I am wondering if redoing the vram thermal pads is worth it.
@@ndcoward I haven’t noticed massive drops, sorry for delay, I also mine when I’m not gaming, I use lolminer because it’s good with AMD cards and right now I’m averaging 51.3 mhs, making £2.50 a day for 80mm of energy. Especially over holidays when I’m away I just let it run. Merry Xmas.

Im on my 2nd sapphire nitro card (R9 390 and Vega 64). Sapphire do such an awesome job with their coolers. My vega 64 sits at 38% fans (1200rpm) under full load and I can't hear it at all.
Can you check temps after repasting? I think the high junction temps are caused by the direct contact heatpipes gaps
I`ve had cooler exactly like this on my gf 1070, it`s really good design, cheap, perfrorms well even after big OC and it`s quiet.

he has said this about a lot of cards, just don't use a conductive thermal paste and be careful just like doing any PC maintenance.
I got a Gigabyte RX 5700 XT Gaming OC the other day, but the temps have me scratching my head. At stock I am hitting 84C core and 105C hot spot playing control in a well ventilated Air 540 case, the fans are at 46% with default curve in a 21C room. Idle temps, even if I manually change the curve so it is 30% fan at the lowest setting, idles at 45-46C. I ended up reseating the cooler with fresh paste, but temps stayed the same. I have to set the fans to at least 60% to have decent temps (75C core 95C hot spot) at stock clocks but it starts to get noisy at those speeds.
Yeah I've heard that the default fan curve is set too low, to keep it silent, but the temps go to 90s. Most of them had to set custom fan curve, and as you mentioned, needs 60-65% to get decent cooling. Just curious, are you happy with the purchase, and would you recommend this card? Because I'm considering either this, or the pulse which is slightly priced higher.

Asked their support if I could buy a replacement and basically got an automated response that my warranty was expired got a real support person which basically said the same thing
Had to jank my way through until I found a replacement fan on aliexpress

You should start turning on the world to WOW sticks. You could brand a good one as your own. For unscrewing it is a must. I like the screwdriver kit, but I use electric for everything.
@@SISSYPUSS I have an 18v but I would never use it for Electronics. I have a 3.6v I use for computers for video cards you risk stripping screws with that much torque. That is why wow sticks are useful. Low torque.
Thank you for the awesome video Steve. Graphics cards are the core of our company (drafting) and I hope other viewers see why purchasing the right card the first time does makes a big difference. Buying a $300 dollar Evoke just to realize the thermal pads are skimped on makes us think of how they likely skimped on discrete and surface-mount components. Is it "good enough"? ...possibly - But if the Evoke card (or any card) fails due to thermal (incompetence), we wouldn't want to waste hard-earned cash on the same card again - so if we had bought the $500 Gigabyte board the first time, we wouldn't have had to spend $800 (total) just to have a functioning system - even more-so when you have to buy graphics cards in bulk like we do. This concept works with most electronics in the industry. It shows that one does "get what they pay for" by doing a little research first. :)

I guess the slightly higher junction temp could be a consequence of the direct touch heatpipes where the "groove" between two pipes cause less thermal efficacy than where the pipes lie horisontal to the 7nm die of the Navi chip?
Exactly what I was thinking when I watched the video too. When watching the actual card review it was puzzling why this card had such good edge temperatures but relatively higher junction temperatures.
But after seeing the heatpipes with the big grooves between them it makes perfect sense.
Prior to the 5700 series and the new junction temperature there was never a way to measure this before. Now it looks likes direct touch heatpipes do have a downside in terms of hotspots on the GPU die.

I was a bit surprised to hear that the gigabyte windforce cooler didn't catch fire during your tests. Absolutely stunned that performed so well.
On the argument of flip-chips and cooling, i think a lot of people are leaving out that there's an entire pcb that the heat would have to pass through before reaching the pads. If is actually mattered, there would be vias specifically for heat dissipation, and considering nobody is designing cards like this, the thermal difference clearly doesn't matter enough for that design consideration. Basically the chips are designed to hot-box themselves with the pcb.
Am I the only viewer here who prefers to first see the tear-down and then the review? From the teardown we can conclude how well the card performs (temperature vs noise and noise and temperature vs. boost). I would like it if the teardown would be uploaded first if the videos are spread out for strategic (TH-cam algorithm) reasons.

i don't think the smoothness of the machining makes much difference if there's gaps between the heatpipes. i would have much rather have seen a metal plate soldered to the heatpipes. there's no heatspreader and then they manufactured a non uniform heatsink
@@heygek2769 realistically the two best coolers so far are both using plates though, the rog strix has a smooth polished plate and the red devil has a plate. good cpu coolers can got the direct contact route because there is an IHS acting as the plate. the gpu doesn't have anything to spread the heat over an area so those enormous coolers are being wasted if half of the heatpipes aren't in contact with the gpu
You can put small slabs of aluminium fin heatsinks. I use 2 and one small tower (North bridge cooler with direct touch heatpipe) on my rx 580. It doesn't really decrease any temps but I won't have artifacts at higher OCs. The pcb is cooler. Try some backplate modding :)

great video, but i have a question. How is the shroud and fans actually attached to the cooler? it looks like its just snapped onto it. would it be easy to remove without having to take apart the rest of the card?

is there a way to know the thermal pads thickness and the mosfait thermal pad thickness aswell, i searched the hole internet and could not find anything, i changed mines since they were totally gone, i placed 0.5mm for the Vrams and 1mm for the mosfait, but i have a problem with mounting pressure i think cause the temps now are totally garbage when i turn on the pc gpu temp is 55 degrees before it was around 45 and when i play junction temperature goes over 100 before it was never going over 90, i need some help with the original pad thickness plz

I'm more excited for the strix, gaming x, and especially the sapphire nitro as the high end sapphire cards usually OC better and have better coolers. (Every sapphire card I had has always surpassed OC expectations like my 1435mhz Rx 480 nitro with a crazy 2300mhz memory oc)
i have always taken the backplate of my cards off, and installed a fan, or two, that blows directly on to the pcb. it has allowed me to overclock the memory higher, every.. single.. time.

Truthfully, I expected much more a half-ass job from Gigabyte. For Polaris and Vega I noticed that both Gigabyte and MSI didn't put in their best effort: MSI which reused its GTX 1060 heatsink for the RX 480 resulting in a noisy and hot card, Gigabyte its Vega-cards which were unstable out of the box (hence being priced so much lower in many countries), MSI their original GamingX RX 580 being noisy and hot compared to the cards from Sapphire and Asus. But this card seems to be fine. I expect the ASRock 5700 XT to be better, I know that the Red Devil will be a lot better, depending on the price I will probably buy one of those. A Sapphire Nitro makes a chance too but with €480/490 for just the Sapphire Pulse (around €450 for the ASRock which I expect to perform better, it has thick copper pipes and comparable fins of the heatsink, as long as they didn't screw up with the thermal contact...) the prices would need to come down a lot!! To be clear, Gigabyte still seems to put in less effort for AMD than for Nvidia but not nearly as bad as MSI this time.
Hey, seems like these cards are a hit or miss. I already posted on reddit and there's been a couple of others with same issues, that goes for this Gigabyte Gaming OC rx 5700 xt model. During gaming my junction temperatures peak / stay at 109-113°C while other sensors report "normal values" and way lower than the junction temperature. In this one example - gpu/junction/mem/vrm (67°/113°/74°/67°C). Ambient temperature was 21-22°C and fan speed reached up to 2700RPM. I'm in the process of RMAing the card.

I have this exact gpu, now 2yrs later its running in the 110-113 junction/hot spot too, custom fans curve made it a lot better (90-100) but now its a bit noisy obviously. Gonna re-paste it soon and use K5-pro cuz no one really knows what is best pad thickness. That doesnt fix it I will slap on 2 noctua's to reduce noise! 😂👍

@@Timmitous The pads, no.. cuz its really difficult to find out which kinds of thickness have been used. Could easily be 3 different kinds, so I used a paste instead. In the end almost same price as 3 sheets of pads and its a perfect fix for not knowing the thickness u need, can recommend it! 👍🤓
With cards that seem to go over the 2 slot thickness, I'd like to know if the cooler will block using the slot below it, because occassionally they don't but eyeballing pictures is a crapshoot.
I just noticed The Backplate has Paint in-between the Metal and Thermal pads, Would it not be Better To Scuff off the Paint where the Pads go on the Backplate, for a Probably Far better Final Result Maybe ! Just Saying, !!! I may Try this When I get new Thermal Pads for the Swap..

I've seen Buildzoid's commentary on the ASUS version of the RX 5700 XT and am interested in getting your input on that model, as well. He makes some pretty strong recommendations regarding its quality, which impressed me, as I was considering the purchase of a Sapphire Pulse; but, am angling toward the ASUS now. Thoughts?
He review PCB, which is incredible for HARDCORE OVERCLOCKING, but normal user couldn't give more fuck about it. Cooler itsels is on Pulse level. Strix is totally not worth money. Better buy Red Devil it's way better (cooler and quiter).
None of the Navi cards are overclockers so everything Asus threw in there is wasted. Go for a Red Devil or wait for the Nitro, much cheaper and similar performance.

I don't suppose you could make a video regarding the hotspot issue after repasting? I purchased a used card on ebay and it has a hotspot/junction temp 30+ degrees higher than edge temps. I tried repasting and I can't seem to correct it. Even tried using better thermal paste and swapped the cheap pads the seller used with some that were the proper sizes and the problem still persists. The card works otherwise and will even play games at those ridiculously high junction temps of 110+ but eventually it will power down the system for thermal protection. So I don't think the die is bad and the cooler appears to be fine. Any ideas?
My gigabyte 5700xt hits 110c on the junction temp at 1130v and stays around 100c at 1050v with lower clocks, i literally removed the card from it's place with a riser cable to check temps without other components close to it and they remain the same, i just removed the backplate and unlike yours mine has/had a square thermal pad for the chip. Gonna try now to see how the temps go without the backplate. Could this have been a reason?

That memory heat plate is not making any real contact (direct or indirect) with the fins. Why didn't you try unscrewing it for the audience like you did with MSI?
Actually, it is. It is conducting to the coldplate for the GPU, which conducts to the fins. Also, it has the best VRAM thermals out of all the cards anyway, so it obviously works well because of the airflow.
