The novel was written by a bengali writer, in Bengali language, when India was under British rule. And back then as Kolkata was the capital of India, most of the Zamindars and Businesses men who lived in kolkata used to think that if they know some British influential men and the language English, then they were wealthy and powerful aur baki dunia jaye bharme. And marriage between a 6,7 year old girl and a 30 year old man who is already married and has kids was very common and normal in Bengal......

Back in 2000 movies depended upon huge expensive sets , multi cast , expensive costumes to make a movie hit. Nobody thought about logic , cringy stuff story etc . Today same thing continues but atleast some of the audience is smart now. Yes the songs were really good back then .

But in the original story (as per the original novel, written by Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay) Paro belonged to a poor family. Trust me the original Novel is far better than this movie.

Things that the movie ruined:
a)the huge motherly and mature side of Paro(she didn't simp for Devdas like that)
b)they made Dev's parents evil(they politely refused the marriage)
c)Paro's husband .The man cared for her a lot
d)Devdas was not so bad charachter as the movies show

The movie actually destroyed the novel. But you cannot judge a storyline written on 1917 ( that is more than 100 years ago) with the reference to new culture.
One can judge or make fun of the cinema but it's very unfunny that you found some loopholes in the novel which was very normal during that era.

This movie script is far away from the actual novel of Sharatchandra's. Parvati was a rural uneducated Bengali girl and Dev was the son of the landlord. This movie portrays the feudal society where normal ppl remain poor till death and landlords collect tax from the poor ppl and become rich. So parvati had no big banglow cause they were too poor to buy it.
I almost wanna watch this movie again. The set n makeup n wardrobe it still amazes me how grand this movie is

The movie actually ruined the iconic novel Devdas, by Sharatchandra. However, the loopholes affected me as the storyline is based ages ago, when patriarchy was a thing, it still is. But back then marrying with a major age Gap was normalised. And the movie basically says that they refused the marriage between Devdas and Parvati because of class difference, whereas in the novel it's caste. So yeah, being a Bengali this movie is a disaster apart from the songs of course.

As a bengali it's a treat to watch this movie getting roasted as they already destroyed the story compared to original novel by exaggerating thing's.....loved it ❤️ they completely portrayed it in a wrong way, Devdas was actually a man with good character, not the way they depicted, also nor his parents were this evil.....paro didn't simped for him in a such a way and her husband was very caring actually.....it's an iconic Novel written more than 100 years ago.....so you can't judge the storyline of the novel based of how this movie depicted it.... the novel was an absolute gem, this movie is totally idiotic 🙏 and the time when this novel was written, child marriages used to be normal and parents used to be absolutely proud of it.....so it's nothing illogical in the novel 🙏

Just a correction 5:43 Devdas' family didn't reject Paro because Paro is Gareeb, its because Paro is from lower caste and she is from Yatra (kind of theatre in bengal) clan....
How come theatre people are considered lower caste? What did Devdas's family do?
According to original story, Devdas was from Zamindar (landlord's) clan, and his father was a Judge from High Court.
In old days, the main criteria for marriage between two people is caste. Paro's family was from lower caste, so the Landlord's clan did not agree for their marriage.
Actually Yatra is a.... You can say, a kind of low class theatre in bengal, made for mass audience, and also, at that time, women acting in theatres was seen in a disrespectful manner.
