    Just as a heads up, if you use this capacitor in its as shown format and you are spot welding onto the negative plates of most 18650's you run the very real risk of melting through the plate and allowing the electrolyte to leak out, I know this because I built it and has that very problem, I have now integrated a 400 amp starter motor relay into the positive pin and an arduino uno with a 4amp NPN transistor and flyback protection diode so that exact timed pulse could be delivered and now it is a very reliable device that can be ran of a bench power supply.

    Actually, this is the beginnings of a great idea! I have that same supply and I am going to experiment with lower values of capacitance and voltage such that the capacitor only has enough energy for a single weld. Then I'll leave the supply connected with a current limit setting that allows the cap to recover as I reposition the probes for the next weld. I loved the macro-views of your work too. I think this will work well and it beats spending $250+ on a spot welder that I will only need for a few days. I'll probably use some other metal than copper for the probes but I'm excited over what you have done here. Thanks!
    BTW, on my supply, Every time I short the output when it's putting out over 25volts, Q2 instantly shorts; the current limiting won't save it. That's the only part that fails and It's only 2bucks, but the supply delivers up to 68 volts to the load after the failure which is no good. Up to 15 volts though, the current limiting works the way you would hope. It's such a great supply otherwise that I just try to be careful.

    When I was in electronics training school, the chapter on capacitors stated that a capacitor with an air dielectric of 1/32nd of an inch would require a plate area equal to 36 square miles to be a one Fared capacitor. Obviously dielectric constants have improved over the years. When I was in school a one Fared capacitor did not exist.

    The limiting energy of the shown charged capacitor is found by the formula: W=CU*2 / 2 = 500x2.7 * 2/2 = 1822.5 J = 1.8225 kJ. It is quite enough to melt a small area of metal.

      what matters here is power not energy

    • @user-su6qf5cj2b
      @user-su6qf5cj2b 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@AlbertRei3424 Power is energy per unit of time. In the case under consideration, it is necessary to divide the found energy by the duration of the discharge. The duration of the discharge is very short (thousandths of a second), hence the energy is very high. Not only the melting of the metal must take place, but also its evaporation.

    • @samueladitya1729
      @samueladitya1729 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@user-su6qf5cj2bit doesn't use all of its energy, probably the voltage dropped from 2.7 to 1.5V. It doesn't really vaporize bevause the voltage is low, maybe 24V could vaporize the metal. The amount of pulse power depends on the voltage,but too high power is not good too because we want to melt it, not to create a hole.

Benefits of a trigger: More control when it needs to spark and better contact to the surface when pull the trigger. I guess the spark would be smaller when doing it this way. Great stuff!

    What is the internal resistance of this capacitor?
    Depending on that, the current that can be passed is determined, and the power consumed by the ridge can also be calculated.
    I would like to know if a supercapacitor can withstand such a current.
    Alternatively, ordinary chemical capacitors can increase the voltage, so even if the capacity is small, a large amount of power can be extracted.
    I want to compare it.

    Long time ago I assembled a spot welder using a car battery and two carbon rods from A or AA cells batery. This rod with a very sharp end were associated in each pole of the car's batery. Thus, I can weld flandre sheet or others metal. Can You make a video about my experiment?

      Indeed super caps are actually quite weak compared to a good LiPo these days, maximum (rated) peak currents aren't that impressive.
      But I suppose as long as the failure mode is a safe venting (or just a degradation of the capacitor) killing a few could be justified for the reduced cost (compared to a real battery welder)... but I must admit that I don't know if that is the case if abused hard enough.
      Also it would be interesting to do the math and calculate the resistance in the copper wires prior to building such a thing to see just how bad the peak current might be.

    • @TalpaDK
      @TalpaDK 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      If I guestimate 3mm diameter and 8 cm total length an online calculator says 0.2 mOhm or 13.5 kA @ 2.7V .... However a 400F GreenCap capacitor has a rated DC ESR of 5mOhm dropping the theoretical max down to 519A @ 2.7V which is still above the rated max peak of 180A by roughly 3 times.
      519A @ 5mOhm equals 1346 J/s, however 1/2 CV^2 = 1822J @ 500F, 2.7V in other words if the capacitor is capable multiple welds it would indicate that the actual current is lower than 519A .
      Also as a side note: Does GreenCap make any 500F snap in capacitors :)

      @@AlexFrBuPi yep, made me chuckle & SMH to see that. It was one of several mis-steps, but there's no point enumerating them all. Having said that, here are a couple of highlights for anyone crazy enough to want to try this at home...
      1. Some insulation between the edges of adjacent cells is absolutely essential - and easy: even a bit of Scotch tape or clear packing tape would do the job.
      2. It would have been better to solder two small gauge charge wires to the battery; this would reduce the risk of welding the alligator clips to the battery terminals (and burning them off!) while connecting the power supply for charging.
      3. Alter the weld energy by charging to a lower voltage: remember "Q=CV" ? Burning holes in the parts you want to connect - let alone the surface you're working on - is hardly the intended outcome, even if the parts are technically connected: it's what we might call an "SODP": "successful operation - dead patient".
      4. A thin piece of sheet metal (preferably iron or steel, not aluminum) under very thin target pieces - like those razor blades - would have helped as a heat sink to prevent the temperature from getting too high - and also protect the working surface!
      5. Connect a resistor between the terminals when the unit isn't being used, just so there is no residual charge that might cause a spark and start a fire. A 1/4 watt device of 22 ohms or greater would be fine. At worst case of 2V charge, that's 2*2/22 = 0.182W which is enough to discharge the cap slowly while not creating too much heat.
