    Loved your patience with the doggies. My father in law loved to eat them, he used a butchers hook on a fence post to pull the skins off after anchoring the head on the hook. He also soaked them in a bucket with vinegar water (weak mix) and the same for other things with a similar make up, the taste was improved I tell you mmmm.

    Excellent tips there Graeme, one of my favourite fish to eat as well, used to be called (Rock Salmon) in the chippy years ago, but the EU put a stopped to that, now called Huss and hardly on the fish and chip shops menu. So Glad you put the Undulate Ray back as they are classified as endangered and that all fish are returned alive. Thank you.

      OOh Oh, look out! Graeme's head is going to get too big for the camera. LOL This man and his son are my favorite TH-cam guys. I have learned sooo very much from them. I have a question. Do we have Dog Fish in the States? I'll look it up but I' m not sure where to look. I think I would likwe to taste one.
      I've seen some cook show hosts talk about the need for us to learn the pleasures of some of our so--called "Junk" fish. I'm all for trying any of them. When my back surgery iss healed and I'm up to going fishing, I'm going to go. Don't know what-all I'll find here but I KNOW there's some fine large-mouth basses here. I love catfish out of a clean creek even carp! Good eating there.

      @@curtisbeardsley5302 Ironically it's also known as the 'Cat Shark' And is prolific in UK waters. So it should be around the NE coast of the US. It's OK to eat but really needs to be eaten very fresh fried in a crispy batter. If it is more than a day old it builds up ammonia and is rather unpleasant. Also remove the fillets as the bones/cartilage turn to glue. I hope this helps 😊

    Eyup Graeme ! I've fished the UK in Fresh & Salt since the late 70s, but i did have a few years overseas, seven of them in the 1000 Islands on the St. Lawrence...Anyhow,years ago i tried a tip on preparing Dogfish that i was given for Pike, and it works just as well for either (it's actually great for many panfish). For Doggies I gut & skin (basically as you did), but then, what i do is sprinkle a little rock salt in the belly cavity and then wrap it in newspaper and then put it in the fridge overnight. Next day i unwrap them, rinse them with fresh water, pat them dry and then cook (i like it battered). What you'll find is that aftertaste is gone plus the flesh is that bit firmer.
    For Pike I gut them, de-fin, head and tail. But i don't scale or skin them at this point. Again, i sprinkle the sections with salt and this time i sprinkle it on the skin too. Again, wrap in newspaper and leave it in the fridge overnight. The next day, when i unwrap them that slime coating has completely gone. After rinsing and drying I then cook Pike under the grill, skin still on, until you see the cooked meat travel to the backbone. Then i remove the skin, scales and all in one sheet, dead simple (albeit a "little" sticky from the gelatine-like isinglass in the skin). Slide the dark belly meat straight off the bone. Pull the cylinders of pure white back meat out and use a pair of tweezers to pull out the Y bones. Then you have 4 fillets of really meaty tasty fish and not a single bone and because of the salt and wicking effect of the newspaper that earthy taste we often encounter in FW fish is no more.
    But with Dogfish the newspaper step really transforms the meat into something actually really good. We dont often see it in the chippys up here in Yorkshire. But growing up in Norfolk that was my preference and still is today (unless i can find a chippy that still serves Haddock with the skin still on. I'm not really a cod fan)

    Never use 'Extra Virgin Olive Oil' for frying. It's the first press and designed for making salad dressings, mayonnaise ect. One it doesn't fry well and Two it's a waste of money as it doesn't enhance the flavour at all and is the most expensive olive oil. For frying fish use rapeseed oil or other oils that stand high temperatures without burning. EVOO doesn't.

Thanks Graeme.

As these are the area's me and my mates fish and be nice to compare your catch to ours. Dogfish is good eating on long shore fishing trips, crushed garlic and butter makes a perfect beach meal.

    • @Noname-qk9or
      @Noname-qk9or 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      fishing iow hi mate I know I'm not Graeme but I am 15 and an England Youth International. If Yarmouth Pier has rough and snaggy ground, then u will need to take plenty of rotten bottoms and lead lifts if u can get them. Also take lots of leads because you don't know how many your gonna lose. Make sure you have checked the weather forecast too, because if it's too windy you will have your rods blown out your tripod. The best rig is definitely Pulley Rigs for cod and codling but pulley droppers up and overs are both good for rough ground and make sure you keep your traces short-your hook lengths and rig bodies, 12 to about 16 inches is good. If your fishing over rough ground, use at least 60Ib mono for your hooklenghts and maybe 80Ib mono for your rig bodies. The best baits for cod and codling- although they are omnivorous which means they will eat practically anything they come across, but the ones they love best are- Squid, peeler crabs and dead blacks or blow lugworm. If u can get them, if not try some cuttlefish or prawns and ragworm. If u use mackerel you'll just be pulling out Dogfish one after the other, but I have witnessed an 8Ib+ Cod caught on a mackerel fillet off the boat. Bluey and mussel work well in Norway for them but I don't know about here. It might also be worth trying cocktail baits just to add as much scent into the water as possible especially if the water is very murky. Lead wise you will need at least 7oz breakers if you are fishing the outgoing tide too, but 6oz will get you about 70-100 yards if you are a good caster with a decent reel, doesn't matter if u have fixed spools or multipliers. If it is a calm day a 4 or a 5oz lead is ample.
      Hope this advice helps you mate
      Good luck and tight lines tomoz

    Fair play for being upbeat Graeme.i know doggies are a blank saver but why dnt we fisherman keep the doggies now and then for dinner and chuck the better fish back so stocks recover for a few years.on the other hand, i know commercials wouldnt stick to no such amnesty, so i see why some say whats the point.id love the fishing to be back to how it was when i used to go with my dad in the 80's.oh well

    I find it funny how ur getting so many dogfish while im in sweden basically only getting big cod and plaice hoping to get something cool like a dogfish or a smooth hound. They´re relatively common but are basically never caught on hook and line...
