Excellent advice wrt the radio (we do the exact same in aviation).
"Securité, Securité, Securité" = Heads-up everybody, there's a bit of an issue going on somewhere.
"Pan Pan, Pan Pan, Pan Pan" = We've got a problem, it's not (yet) life threatening, but we could do with some assistance.
"Mayday, Mayday, Mayday" = We have a life threatening situation and need urgent help right now!
And always remember that you can upgrade a Pan call to a Mayday, and can downgrade a Mayday to a Pan, as circumstances dictate.

Thank you John. Your instructions and delivery are spot on, not only are you protecting yourself and any passengers, you are also making it as safe and helpful to anyone who should have to come and assist you. Why 4 people would dislike a video which is about keeping folk safe and responsible watercraft is rather sad. I just hope they take on board your advice for theirs and others safety.

      - Thanks mate. Your comments about the dislikes just highlights "jealousy dislikes" we have a few on every video before the video is even an hour old. They are from other channel owners who subscribe to us just to dislike the vids - and just go to show the unpleasant nature of some people. I hope the video is helpful to folks. :)

Don't know if this has been said but .... when I was a signaller in the forces it was explained to me that if you think as "over" as you are just handing over the conversation to the other guy. Straight forward really! New to here - really great, hoping to get my first boat soon!

I really enjoy watching your channel. Amazing photography in and out of the water. My family spent many holidays in Coverack Very good presentations on boat handling and safety. 3 items extra I would have on board. A compass, mirror for signaling and a flash light. Thanks for sharing your fishing experiences and knowledge.

    • @TheFishLocker
      @TheFishLocker  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      - I can agree with the flashlight but most folks today would honestly struggle with a compass. And the mirror. Ok. Yes in a lifeboat survive kit but signalling via mirror is a really last resort.

What is fun is to prepare a LIST that you check each time you go. After so many years, I still go down the list and say "oh yeah--I forgot about that one". And you can compare lists with other boaters; I have never met a boater I could not learn something from--or a boater who could not learn something from me.

Great video, loads of good/sound advice and information. The RNLI used to do safety checks and give advice on small craft (I doubt they do at the moment). I had one done and they recommended a fire blanket to help to smother a fire in the outboard engine.
I saw a comment about a sea anchor and agree, you can improvise a rope and bucket to do the same job.
Things I have on my 5.85M RIB that I didn't see here. A charger for the handheld VHF (I've needed that in the past), a radar reflector, white flares (that don't come in a standard flare pack) a floating orange smoker flare (for helicopter crews). I'm a diver, so I will also have a drysuit. Just food for thought.
I also saw a comment about other courses, besides the ones mentioned, the Sea Survival course is a fantastic one, it's one day, not too much money and loads of fun...and well worth it.

Iv just noticed you have the icom handheld🤔. Iv watched this post about 3 times writing a list what I need to keep aboard just if I need it or can assist anyone els who may. Great video as always John.
If I can suggest a couple of extra things to consider…
A PLB (Personal Locator Beacon) is about the best £200 you can spend, particularly anyone who’s fishing alone. Somebody mentioned an EPIRB - a PLB is basically the same thing, but it fastens on your life jacket belt and is about the same size as a packet of fags! if you fall overboard, it can send a distress signal (showing your GPS position) via satellite from anywhere in the world. Take it with you too if you go mountain walking.
The RYA Safetrak app is a free download for your phone and has a lot of useful features. But the one I’d highlight is the ability to pre-register your boat details, emergency contact, boat photo, safety equipment onboard etc with the Coastguard before going afloat. Then if the worst happens, the rescue services know exactly what to search for. (For us old-timers, this used to be the CG66 system, which has now been replaced)

Great video - watched this before doing my VHF SRC training course and exam today so very helpful thanks. Started at 9:00am and finished at 17:00 - including exam!. One thing they did tell us on the course is that it is now frowned upon to use the coastguard on channel 16 for a radio check (even though they will answer) - so I got that one wrong (fortunately not during the exam though :D). Instead use NCI on channel 65. Also we are no not supposed to broadcast safety (securite) messages ourselves but to instead inform the coastguard and let them do it. Now I know that somebody will want say "what a load of rubbish...." but I am just relaying what I was taught. Please don't shoot the messenger (ducks under sofa).

    • @TheFishLocker

Hi, love the vids, just thought I'd add some info on channel 16. There are devices around the country that are monitored by the RAF, these are called Direction Finders (DF) they provide a bearing to the signal sent on channel 16. They can auto triangulate these bearings to help find your position. In the south west these devices are positioned at Portland, Wembary Point (Plymouth), RAF Cauldrose and Newquay Airport.

Totally agree. I’m in NZ as well. An EPIRB is a must have IMO. I would also go as far to say that a fixed VHF with a min 1m antenna would be a necessity as well. I have fixed, hand-held and a PLB. The Cook Straight will not take prisoners. I would also state (and I mention regularly on our NZ social media), that a Day Skippers and VHF course should be mandatory anywhere in the world.

Hi john, hope you don't mind me adding a few thoughts.
A hand held may only work for a couple of miles so as a general thought they should be a back up only.
A dedicated VHF and decent antenna costs very little , get one, no ifs or butts or excuses !
A power pack ( or jump start ) they will also keep your phone fully charged all day (mine also has a torch an compass all in one )
I believe (in the Uk) this should become law, the basics you have are spot on .

Andy Hook - As I say in the vid mate, a minimum of a hand held. I can’t really start demanding folks get something or they’ll start getting annoyed. And whilst it isn’t law yet, it’s up to people’s own choices, so “suggesting” as I have will hopefully encourage folks to make the right choice. 😉 I do have a few power packs for the GoPro and camera etc. And a solar panel that charges the battery. 😬👍🏻🎣🛥

Enjoyed your video yet again John, especially as I have always been nervous about talking over in Australia, where people sometimes ask what I've just said ( still having my strong Geordie accent ), so I get my wife to speak for me a lot of the time. So this video about communication over a radio really does scare me. Over here, the rules are similar but different, the main differences being we need to take a test ( which I have done and now have a boat which I have not as yet had in the water) and there are certain conditions where (and when ) we are required by law to adhere to and carry aboard our boats depending on where we are boating, Inland alpine waters, open ocean and over 2 nautical miles for eg we are required by law EPIRB but not under that distance. The list is long and I wont bother you further with it. My brother in law has taught sailing back home in the UK at Salcombe quite a few yeas ago and I could not believe some of the things he told me about boating licences etc. Made me realise that it was all a 'money grabbing' authority over here.
Anyway John, your video is, as always great to watch. I'd love to see a longer video from you though (look forward to that time) . This one is really pertinent for me. Ty so much and keep going bro. You're growing with each vid you do. :)

Just wanted to take this opportunity to compliment you on your fascinating TH-cam channel. The number of species you have there makes me really jealous. As an ex-pat Brit, who has lived in North Germany for the last forty years, my target species in saltwater is 40cm plus seatrout, from the beach, using spinners in daylight and flies in the dark. The other species I have caught on this method are codling, coalfish and garfish. Not that I am a toffy nosed flyfisherman but I still find threading lugworms on to hooks pretty disgusting.
And I don't know what you think but I think that the most reckless idiots on the water are the increasing number of jet-skiers who disregard the "rules of the road" in coastal waters. They should make them sit down, read and fully digest the COLREGS.

    • @TheFishLocker
      @TheFishLocker  4 ปีที่แล้ว

@@captainpugwash4100 - Jetskiers are a menace and a liability 9/10 times. Closely followed by paddle boarders. Hi John, Great set of videos on buying to launching a boat. I have just picked a second hand 520. What weight is your grapple anchor?.

Thanks for another really helpful edition John. On the handheld VHF what sort of range does it have? For example when you were 10 miles off with the steering failure could you have reached the Coastguard if necessary? Once again thanks for sharing. ATB Gareth

Gareth Grimshaw - No problem Gareth. Hand held VHF’s are only really line of sight and that can sometimes be affected by atmospherics. But I have used mine at a range of around 20 miles boat to boat. That’s why I say the minimum you should have is a hand held. Ideally if you are going any great distance you should have a proper VHF and aerial. 😉🛥👍🏻🎣

John fantastic channel, myself and my dad getting boat for this year and couldn't find a more helpful set of videos on Internet. Quick Question on the handheld vhf I've heard they only have a range of 5nm - how does this work if your further down the coast from the coast guard / Harbour. Likely a silly question but just wondering!

They do not have a very big range that is true. Built in sets are better.

Tim Grenville-Cleave - Thanks Tim. I don’t know why people feel the need to complicate everything all the time. When often simplicity is best. 🤷🏻‍♂️👍🏻🛥🎣😉
