I'm 70, arthritic and might well never catch another fish. So instead I look up Mr Pullen, the most active fisher-pensioner anywhere. And know he'll entertain me no matter how much or how little he might happen to catch. But I was deeply envious of that stinking bass, Graham. Well done sir!

My best offer with your willow tree is that it's dying of old age. They are relatively short lived trees (40-50 years) and the summer drought may well have stressed it to the point it gives up the ghost.
The fungus will indeed be living on the wood which has already died. The very wet autumn has helped the fungus - they thrive in wet conditions.
The maggots are from a fly laying it's eggs on the fungus so they can feed on it as it decays. Flies do this commonly with fungi - it's a good source of food at a time of year when there isn't much about. I couldn't tell you the name of the fungus but it's probably an opportunistic species that targets any dead wood rather than something specific to willow.
The maggots are likely from a blowfly - yes they could be used as bait if you could be bothered to collect enough!

    • @eastcoastandy2905
      @eastcoastandy2905 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Looks like Honey Fungus (armillaria mellea) has taken over the willow. It is considered by some as edible. Never tried it myself. Maggots look good for bait though...

I just saw the fungus on the willow Graeme. It looks like Honey Fungus (Armillaria), which to be, sure shows a white fungal growth, which can be found between the bark and wood, usually at ground level. The mushrooms only appear in Autumn. It may be too far gone to be saved.

Great video Graeme. The tree issue at the end if you have fungi growing at the base of the tree. It means the tree in infected with rot. Once it happens the whole tree is infected. The internal structure is probably rot also. Best thing to do is cut it down so the fungi does not spread 👍🏻

I'm in my 60's now, so I know what you mean about hating the cold and circulation problems in the hands. I too like to fish in peace and quiet, it's all about relaxation with (hopefully) a few minutes of excitement now and again. I must admit, I have never actually targeted whiting. They have always been regarded as a pest species taking baits meant for other fish. Good to see you out on the shingle again.

We have so many Whiting off the East Norfolk coast that I usually only put one rod out as it gets too hectic and if you put more than the single rod out out you end up with some fish deep hooked. These Whiting are now here all year round, when once they were only present Autumn/Winter. There is no point in Lug or Rag as you still get Whiting, fresh Herring works great for most things, but we catch the Whiting on Pigs Liver or Hearts which they readily take and of course these baits are dirt cheap…

  • @derekbradley-balmer3056

I think that's a Honey Fungus. If you peel away the bark is it white? it gets into the roots and will weaken the tree to the point that is vulnerable to blowing or falling down. But that can take a few years. As I recall Honey Fungus are amounsgt the biggest organisms on the planet, with mycelium hundreds of metres long.

Hey Graeme nice session. The weather isn't that good. Supposed to get really cold in December. Maybe your tree won't make it. I've seen this in are Forest here in Germany. They always take down. Have a great weekend.

If you want to catch Whiting Graeme, get yourself up to North Wales. We are currently catching around 100 per session. It's crazy 👍

Honey Fungus at the base of your tree, chainsaw time sadly. Magots eating in the toadstools. Ivy growing on sparse trees, Ash dieback isn't helping, and normally grows most in spring and autumn when the leaves are off and it's gets more light. Mainly prevalent where no/little maintenance is taking place. Nice Bass's btw

Awesome video Graham nice, bass and good of you to put back after you had your dinner. Raking always works in coarse fishing. releasing worms, critters, grubs etc. maybe the dredger is, doing a same in the, sea. Those poor guys getting pebbledashed 😂😂. Keep em comming. Im off to Walcott beach tomorrow morning 🤞🤞

no expert but my guess would be Honey fungus - have a look to see if you can see any black blootlace like threads arounf the base or under the bark.
Best thing you can do is get your tame lumberjack to drop it cos if it decides to fall it could do serious damage to you, the bungalo or worse still ... the tackle shack ! if it losing bark at the base then it not worth trying to save IMHO
Good video though ... nice Bass ... I'm afraid that would have come home with me if I'd have landed it.

It was a very close run thing with the Bass. I thought about keeping it but then I had a good evening,so I thought it might bring some luck if I returned it.
