    Great tips! One thing I wish I knew before crashing my Mavic Mini, check the Return to Home altitude and set it according to your environment!! For my first couple of flights I flew out in the open fields, no problems. When I flew in an industrial area and I lost connectivity completely, the 20m altitude was not high enough and the drone flew straight into a building trying to get back to home and there was nothing I could do about it. 😥 Tip: Set your RTH altitude according to your environment, every time!

  • @tim509
    @tim509 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    I think forgetting to hit record is a right of passage. I drove 2.5 hours to get some cool photos and video of a landmark. I wasn't used to using intelligent flight modes yet. I did a couple "quick shots", which record automatically, then I set up a POI shot right at sunset. It was epic! Well, it would have been... learned the hard way that unlike quick shots, you actually have to hit record in the intelligent flight modes. Doh!
    Thanks for all the tips, Jeven and Aldryn!

    • @JevenDovey
      @JevenDovey  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Yeah I've missed some amazing shots by not hitting record. One trick that i use now is that I hit record as soon as I start flying and just keep it rolling through the whole flight. That way I never miss anything

  • @isalan
    @isalan 4 ปีที่แล้ว +99

    Maybe DJI could put an option in the software to allow you to pick "auto record on take off." You can always delete but you can’t add later.

      Rich Clark Productions May be it is but I’m in my late 70’s and I don’t think I should deny myself the experience of trying different things as long as I am careful and follow the rules. I qualified for the Canadian license (try it, it’s not easy), so with all you have to keep track if not having to push the record button keeps me from disappointment later then I’m all. for it. All you need to do is trash unwanted video. You know someday you will forget to push the button.

    • @trini_boi2414

      I'm old too but I don't think I'll ever forget to push that record button 😂

    • @otegadamagic
      @otegadamagic 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @Rich Clark Productions that someone forgets to hit the record button doesn't mean they are not smart. I've always hit the record button whenever I fly not cos I'm smarter than someone who forgets to, maybe I've never had a circumstance where I just forget to hit record.
      I would say tho that a checklist is a good thing

  • @TheNiteNinja19

    The biggest mistake a new drone pilot can make, is buying a drone more expensive than what they're willing to lose. I started out with small toy drones, and gradually worked my way up. I learned how to fly drones that had absolutely no pilot assist whatsoever. Knowing how to control your drone without any assistance, is a valuable skill.

    • @JevenDovey

    I've been flying for around 20 years and find my self guilty of every one of those mistakes outlined. I just got a mavic mini a few months ago and know exactly how frustrating it is when you get to just yards of the flying location and realise you left your SD card in the TV! Or not pressing the record button when you got some cool chance footage! Thanks for uploading, good food for thought their :)

    I bought a Mavic 2 Pro on Black Friday, and since thst day I have flown 5 times. On time number 4, I was flying along a bluff in NM and the wind was 25mph with 35 mile gusts. When the wind wore down the battery and itnwas trying to come back to home point, the wind was pushing it so hard it was being pushed in the opposite direction. I barely got it back.

      Nice cautionary tale. Thank you. I might be trying my drone on the New Jersey shore when surf fishing. Over the years, dating to 2014, I've pulled two lost drones out of the drink right at the surf line. I can imagine the distraught owners watching their craft being blown-out to sea.

You can imagine how frustrating it was looking at shaky and tilted screen when drone was turning aroung.

    For new Mini owners especially, I've noticed one big mistake is a poor understanding of the limits of GPS. I've seen multiple reports of Mini's just "taking off and crashing". Then you get a look at the logs and find out they tried to launch from between two houses or from an area surrounded by apartment blocks and trees. Launching from spots susceptible to GPS multipath errors and high HDOP is a common cause of crashes, especially with the Mini since it has no collision avoidance sensors.

    I'm so taken, by both of you guys. You've given so much time and effort with these helpful videos, not only giving us some great tips and training on getting good shots, but all of the pitfalls and tricks of the trade, none of us should be flying without. It's so easy for me to just say something like-"oh, I know my props are on good, I'll just take her up", when I know that just one prop coming off is probably gonna be disaster. Why not just check the tightness on them first. I just want to say too, that even though I lease Adobe Premier, heck, you can do most of what you need with a pretty cheapie video editing program, if money is an issue. I think most all of them do cuts, disolves, titles and the basics. I always try and "shoot to edit", these days, because it's so cheap to do it. Just erase your card when it's transferred over to your computer. I say that in regards to what you said, Jeven, about not shooting shots long enough. Of course in any kind of editing suite, it's a cinch to just shorten it to whatever length you want. You can shorten it easily if it's too long, but the only way I know how to lengthen it, would be to slow lthe video down, and that isn't always what you would want. Thanks again for another great video. Marc Trainor.

    1:43. Yeah very true. I was flying my Mini2 in a field with a single telegraph pole in it and was flying around and past it. There was one time I was flying from left to right with the pole in the 'background' but as I was nearing the pole I just thought to stop the drone and turn it towards me. At the time I thought I was being over cautious. Turns out when I was looking at the footage later on, my drone was heading straight for the pole and would have smashed into it at top speed. You have to get used to distances with these things at first.

    With the Mavic Mini my repeated mistake is failure to record while thinking I'm recording. This is due to switching from picture to video. In the DJI Phantoms the buttons on left and right of the controller immediately snap a photo or record video on initial press. Not so on the Mini. You have to first switch mode then click again, not too quickly, to start recording. I hate that about the mini though.

    If hitting record then taking off, re-focus the camera when airborne. You don't want it focused really close then try to record landscape so much farther away. If your drone can do that.

    as always bro, great video! I sub'd a couple days ago and have been making my way through your content. You've got a great presenting style and your edits are on point!
    I wish you'd made this video years ago when I got my first Mavic pro because I had to learn everything you've said in the video above myself.....TONS of wasted flights spent learning the basics of videography.
    The best tips you mentioned in this video are the jerky movements, going straight up to max height, forgetting memory cards....and as dumb as it sounds.....pressing record. I've gotten back from shoots before with lots of photos and not a single video because I just got carried away flying and forgot what I was doing. I also forget to put the memory card back in my drone after uploading it to my computer all the time - super annoying.
    Then you get back from an adventure where you had the luxury of sending up your cool ass drone.....and no useable footage - shots too high in the sky, not interesting, no real subject, no sense of movement, no actual flight plan, just send the thing up and it's full of jerky unusable shots or birds eye views with nothing of interest.
    Great advice to any new drone pilot!
    Keep it up matey!

    My first drone flight flew it like 100 metres in the air and the wind took it and it slammed into the side of a university building. It took me an hour to find it. It was fine.

    Hey Jeven.... Appreciate the info in this video/update. I do try follow the suggestions offered. I have had that one instance (thus far), of having the message - SD card capacity maxed. Dang! Fortunately I had another card with me. Most of the time I down load my video shoots to my computer, and then clear the card, when I put it back in the drone.
    I watched two of your earlier posts on how to get better cinematic footage - no jerky camera motions; drift up/down, etc. Both have proved quite helpful in recent outings. I think you mentioned using the Histogram, and that has helped with getting better exposures. Still its - practice, practice, practice. I'm currently practicing combination inputs. The Gimbal down input on the controller, is a bit tricky. Can't feel the little thumb wheel move sometimes. Argh! Can we talk - too fast of movement.
    Would like to know where Aldryn was for his part of the video? Trying to build a list of different locations to try.
    Cheers,
    Tony
