The frame looks good on the roofing spot! One of the things that we have been doing when it comes to Teleprompter, we will set up the camera and Teleprompter first so that the talent can rehearse and read through the lines while we set up lighting and everything else. We find that warms them up.
@@videopromike Thats great. I like that. However, they usually want to start editing it and touching the iPad haha
@@davidmorefield Ah, I see. Was that what he was doing when he was next to the ipad?
@@videopromike haha yes
Those automated modes make slick drone shots so consistent and easy.
thanks really enjoyed this blog, especially the little details like the shiftover in perception about the mics, and reading between the lines of the WSJ request. Helps to know where things are going. Thanks and good luck with your work!
@@bobsteinfinkel I can imagine they’ve received a ton of scratchy audio 😅
Being a DP who also does sound mixing, asking most video shooters to hide lavs and make sure they are noiseless with no rubbing, scratching, cable noise, etc. is a tall order. It's not rocket science but you do have know exactly what to do, have the correct lav concealers/shields and supplies, and knowledge of how to rig it and you need time to rig correctly which often inexperienced clients won't allocate the 10-15 minutes per talent to rig a hidden lav correctly.
This is all a consequence of low to mid level clients refusing to budget for a pro sound mixer. I deal with that all of the time both as a DP and as a sound mixer and it can be frustrating to hear the end results of NOT hiring a pro to do this intricate and unique job, sound mixing. I still push for hiring a sound mixer on every job I am DP on. I'm doing a shoot next week that began with me on camera, a sound mixer, PA and a producer. After much balking by the client , the job is now me, solo, with my FX3 on a gimbal and my Rode Wireless Pro. I won't be trying to hide mics. They don't pay for a sound mixer, they don't get hidden mics, UHF mics and the sound is what it is. What's amazing is this is a huge Fortune 100 client with almost unlimited money but evidently they didn't know how to budget for this three day shoot.
@@danbrockettDOP I like it. It’s a win/win. They don’t pay for a sound guy and are happy with the seeing the lav.
Love the behind the scenes content!
@@JonathanKlempa It’s fun to document and talk to the community.
Dig that lighting setup! Wish my prompter wasn’t so big and clunky. Yours look clutch
@@jonwaldman94 I purposely went with a minimal one with a cradle for iPad. But if you only use the included cradle, it will barely support the iPad. Lots of bending. That’s why I in erred the order of the cradle, it allows the iPad to rest on the dual rods.
Sick surf footage!❤
@@travisminneapolis Thanks. I love going to Puerto Rico any chance I can get. Would love to have a property there.
-25c (-13f) here in canada... Best part is that its only about 10° warmer inside the hockey rink I shoot at...
@@Za_Vas I wouldn’t last one day.
Even dedicated sound ops can require retakes due to a rubbing lav, so if you dont need to hide it... dont risk it. 🎉
Yeah depends on the clothes alot , Ive had plenty of experienced audio people having to constantly change the mic position , better just to go with a boom mic then interrupt all the time.
@@robinprobyn1971 I’d love to get better at it when I need to conceal it for doc work.
@@travisminneapolis As long as the client is cool with it, I’ll happily clip it to the outside.
@@davidmorefield These guys do good stuff to help conceal mic,s . But some clothing its just always going to make noise , or the subject moves around alot .
@ Every time I work with a sound op I envy their assortment of clips, and also the fact they can spend so much time towards getting it hidden and sounding great. Meanwhile I hustle back to setting up cameras, directors monitor, lights, flags, and decorating the set. lol
3:34 be careful with the slate. Soft sticks close to peoples ears! 😮
Btw.. smart move with the A7s. The EVF is great. 👍
@@Josefx3m Yes, that’s a good call. I’ll have him do a soft clap next time.

Great stuff:) Nice to know about the Smallrig teleprompter too. What fraction of work is this type of job compared to the rest?
@@anoophothi it’s pretty common. Besides my retainer client, most agency work will have this structure. But remember, this is for small crew work. Not high level agency stuff.
0:22 10 points for the effort but tell him he can use a Gimbal in underling mode. So he can stand while he does this move. Much better for the back :) great Video
@@JonackFilm Thats a good option. LCD is farther away though.
@davidmorefield hm yes but he doesn't control focus anyway with moves like that ^^ I sometimes don't even look so much on the screen while I film stuff like that lol xD you would wonder how well it works and how fast you get good B Roll
Is production Hub still worth it today? I have a regular job but I definitely want to do more freelance work. I have all my own gear and been doing it videography and photography for a long time now. I want to get into Production hub but worry the monthly payment may be waist of money.
@@ivanvargas5295 Of you have a good portfolio you can show and are in a decent market, yes. Ask them for a free trial of the Featured plan. They will do a 4 month option instead of 12 months.
The lower cost options are not worth it.
Did you guys end up using that photographer for your surf trip? Curious to see the footage from that
@@Died1209 we did not unfortunately but I did connect with him. The surf break we went to had a couple different take off points and my crew was scattered so it didn’t make sense to have a photog in the water. He wouldn’t be able to capture everyone. But he saw the shoutout in my vlog. He’s down to grab a beer next time haha
Interesting video sir . Don't want to be an old fart , but your buddy could do a "soft clap " with the slate , that close to the subjects face . Smacking like that would get you sacked back in the day when I was a clapper loader :)
@@robinprobyn1971 good to know! I could see that being a concern.
How are you previewing the MXF clips at 5:29? I have to load my clips into an editor to view. Im on a mac as well.
@@DarkWaterCreatives There is something on apples website that talks about ‘pro file support’ or something like that. Install that and you can see all the mxf. It’s from Apple directly.
@@davidmorefield OMG this is awesome. I have hated this about the MXF files for 9 months since I got my FX6.
Thank you!!!!!

@@UrbanAnimeLounge Start by having a sporadic brain that can’t commit to anything.
Beware the Elgato Cam Link if you have an M chip MacBook. I can’t get mine to work without freezing or flashing a green frame every few seconds. Tried the auto vs asynchronous encoding thing and no luck. I ditched it to use the USB output on my A7IV.
Could your zoom call be done on the A7S3 with the USB output into zoom?
@@Nathan_Lundstrom haha I guess that’s a benefit of having an old 2015 MacBook. It’s not an m chip.
No, a7s3 doesn’t have the ability to be a direct connect camera to a laptop unfortunately.
Interesting , Im using an older Mac , but didnt know the M chip ones could be weird with these cheaper HDMI capture cards . Not sure if my fx3 out puts picture via USBC , but never tried it . Thanks for the heads up .
